1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

Was driving and a tick was present then over heated sat on side of road until cooled down added coolant drove home . The next day car was drivable. Drove to school and car was sounding funny so took it to a repair shop and they told me the particular engine in the vehicle has a fuel efficient component where it shuts down the cylinders on the freeway, and the lifters are supposed to open, but our lifter did not open. It got stuck and grind the camshaft in the motor. Needless to say I had to have the car towed home. It’s just sitting in my parking lot. I tried calling Dodge. They wouldn’t help me. I tried calling multiple agencies to help. I looked up on the internet and there is multiple complaints about the same problem it’s called the hemi lift so hopefully one day this can be recalled because I’m still paying on the car. I had a year and a half. No one will help me. My kids were driving the car. What if the thing blew up on them on the freeway and somebody hit them because car wouldn’t move anymore . Or if they were taking the car through the desert and there is no phone calls and no one around. If they were going around corners of a mountain and just stopped on them or blew up because can’t drive the car anymore. Very bad and scary and sad that the builder of that motor won’t fix their mistake and leave countless people stranded and in a predicament.

2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2024

As documented in the previous report.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2024

I need to address a serious issue regarding the car I purchased in 2020 from a private vendor. Upon taking the car to crown Dodge dealership in ventura county for repair, I had to pay roughly $700 out of pocket for the service and rented a car from hertz for the days I was without my car. However, upon receiving the car back, it still had unresolved issues with the electrical components and dashboard noise. It is unacceptable that the manager at the dealership did not prioritize my safety or the quality of the car I purchased. Since this car is my sole mode of transportation, I demand a prompt resolution to this matter. I expect immediate assistance in addressing these concerns. Thank you.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2023

I experienced a catastrophic timing chain failure despite prior recall work being performed by Dodge that supposedly resolved their known timing chain issues with the 5. 7l hemi with automatic transmission. This failure occurred without any prior warning at a cruising speed of about 65 mph rendering the car undrivable. There were no warning lights, drivability issues, or signs of the impending failure. This is a well-maintained car with only 80,000 miles, never missing a required oil change and other maintenance tasks. Timing chains should not fail at such low milage - indeed, timing belts will last longer before they fail. This failure occurred on a major highway placing me and other motorists in danger from the car being unmovable and potentially causing a high-speed collision on a 70 mph highway. If this had occurred less than 0. 5 miles down the road, both shoulders of the roadway were closed due to road widening construction. A certified letter with pictures of the timing chain and timing chain guide failures with a receipt for associated repairs was sent the to the manufacturer in December 2023 but they have not given me the courtesy of a reply. The engine was replaced by an independent mechanic at an out-of-pocket cost of $13,217. 38 and the pictures were taken at that time by the repair shop.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2023

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and independently turned off. In addition, the low engine oil warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had reoccurred about three or four times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2021

The gen iii hemi has an inherent design flaw in which the rollers making contact with the camshaft will fail, causing damage to the camshaft and causing the engine to misfire. This is due to the camshaft being moved away from the crankshaft as it causes oil starvation. After extensive research it appears to affect cars of various miles and workload. There is no single cause that makes this happen other than a grievous design flaw. The main complaint is that you experience total power loss at higher revs, making it dangerous to drive on the interstate or attempting to merge into traffics as the engine begins to shudder and lose most power. Whether it’s 40k miles or 110k miles, the flaw does not discriminate. After numerous attempts to reach Chrysler technical service on how to prevent this, I’ve been ignored and case numbers deleted. Now this is very important. This causes a misfire which not only destroys catalytic converters, but arrives with no notice. It’s very possible someone may be attempting to pass someone on the interstate and suddenly lose power. My mechanic inspected it and confirmed that the rollers failed, causing causing lifters to not make proper clearance. This needs to be investigated as this engine is in millions of cars. And even if 1% of these failure occur on an interstate, the potential for fatalities is absolutely nothing to ignore. I kindly ask that this matter be investigated. As not everyone can afford the 5k to fix this problem like I can. And due to its high prevalence in trucks, this could cause those who use their trucks for work to be put in a tight spot. I understand normal wear and tear, but by no means should a cam and valve train fail this soon in a car. Giving the gen iii hemi by Chrysler and their infamous timing chain defect, I believe this is also a dangerous flaw and something Chrysler ignored. Hoping it would outlast warranties. Best regards.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2021

The car has an intermittent issue where at highway speeds it will go into almost a limp mode. Basically the check engine light comes on and car loses power and won't go over 45 mph. I have to pull over and shut car off. It will restart and operate normally for a random period of time. Very dangerous when on the highway and have to pull over to the side of the road. From the forums I belong to, this is a very common problem. There are even members that have bought a brand new Challenger and had this happen to them after a few months. The code that usually appears from this is misfire on cylinder 1 and even the dealerships don't know what causes it and hard to diagnose since it happens randomly. Love the car but very annoyed that this keeps happening and no one can figure out the fix.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

The timing chain broke for the second time. It broke the first time at 65k+ miles. It was fixed (of much damage) via the po1 customer care "recall". Now it's at approx. 104k miles, it's the same problem and Chrysler denied taking responsibility and my claim.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2019

The engine dies randomly sometimes right after starting and sometimes at road and/or highway speed's it will readily restart with the key and run fine until the next random act. It has died at least a dozen times in the last six months once in a curve that caused the car to drift in on coming traffic before I was able to restart it luckily there was no opposing traffic. It shows no engine codes.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2017

Tamara inflator. Electronic window circuit, power steering, critical coolant overflow.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2016

My 5. 7-liter hemi engine hesitated six times and the engine computer registered this malfunction each time, but never set a code which the dealer mechanics could read to diagnose the problem. Each malfunction corrected itself in a few seconds, but the last hesitation was a strong one during which the engine ran very roughly for about two minutes before running smoothly again. It felt like the engine was misfiring on one or more cylinders. Each malfunction happened while I was passing other vehicles in a straight line on a highway with the engine under acceleration load. When I eased off the accelerator pedal, the hesitation disappeared and I was able to complete each vehicle pass, but each pass thus took longer and put me more at potential risk of colliding with oncoming vehicles. The last strong hesitation forced me to pull onto the shoulder and wait until the engine corrected itself in about two minutes. This hesitation happens rarely and the engine has continued to run smoothly since the last strong event. I don't know if this problem resides inside the engine or within the electronic ignition. I have a six-speed manual transmission and cruise control on this car.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Car turned off while driving for the 9th time. Rapid automatic down shift of gears while turning left then to right. Green light, aprox 45 mph, taking left turn. Wrong way. Hit brakes hard, turned wheel to right. Car died after wheel began turning to right/during turn. Lost power steering and power brakes. Very difficult turn, stop, and restart. Vehicle did not store any codes. Dodge/Chrysler says this is "not serious" because there are no error codes saved in the car and they cannot duplicate the failure. They are not willing to look investigate further because there are no codes and it didn't die on their test drive while hooked to their diagnostic equipment. This is dangerous!!!.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2015

Car turned off while driving for the 8th time. Rapid automatic down shift of gears while turning right. State highway. 50 mph. Hit brakes hard, turned wheel to right. Car died after wheel began turning to right/during turn. Lost control. Lost power steering and power brakes. Very difficult turn, stop, and restart. Vehicle did not store any codes. No vehicle in other lane so no accident. Dodge/Chrysler says this is "not serious" because there are no error codes saved in the car and they cannot duplicate the failure. They are not willing to look investigate further because there are no codes and it didn't die on their test drive while hooked to their diagnostic equipment. This is dangerous!!!.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

While drivivg on my way home doing about 60mph in the right lane on the expressway and the car completely shutdown, the engine light came on, I couldn't even steer the car, the steering wheel locked up no breaking capeability, had to let the car coast into the emergency lane, luckly there weren't any cars in front or behaind me. Which could have been fatal. While in the emergency lane put the car in park turned off ther ignition, turned on the ignition put the car in drive and the car would move, put it back in park turned the ignition off again, started it again put in drive.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2014

Driving at highway speed and decelerating to enter i40 west of ashville, nc. Engine suddenly lost power. I was able to coast to a safe stop at the right shoulder. If the failure had happened 10 miles farther their would have not been enough shoulder on either side. Towed car to Dodge dealer, was informed next day that timing chain failed (5. 7 l hemi auto ). Vehicle was serviced at dealer 1 week previously and I was informed that the parts for the timing chain recall were on back order and it would be 4-6 weeks till I could get the repair. Potentialy very serious safety issue. Vehicle is being repaired under warranty.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

I was coming home from work and my 2010 Dodge Challenger suddenly cut off. I was going approximately 63 mph and lost all power, I had to coast to the side of the highway. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where the car was purchased. The service dept notified me that my timing chain broke. The engine is pretty much shot, I have been looking at a lot of Dodge forums and this has been happening quite often.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

I was on the highway when all of a sudden I lost power to the engine and steering. I was not able to get to side of the road. I was stuck in the middle of the highway. I had the car towed to the shop where I was told that the timing chain had broken. Wow.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2013

I came to a stop sign and made a stop. I went to accelerate and the car turned off. Had to stop the car completely in the middle of an intersection to turn it back on.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2013

On 9/26/13 I was driving on the interstate at approx. 60 miles per hour, I then saw several warning lights come on the dash and the car lost all power, luckily I was able to coast down a bridge and off to the side of the road. The car had to be towed to the local Dodge dealership the next day. After a tear down of the engine, I was told that the timing chain broke and caused extensive engine damage. 2 weeks later and I'm still waiting on the parts to be delivered to the dealership and the repairs to be made. After doing some research online, I see that there are several other Dodge Challenger owners with this year and engine type who have had the same problem. Since I have done all of the required scheduled maintenance, I feel that I am not at fault for this issue. I now await to see the outcome of how my car performs once these extensive repairs are made and how this will effect my trade in value.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2013

While traveling on interstate 40 on my way to work in rush hour traffic I was in the fast lane and heard a pop in the engine compartment. The lights on the dash came on and I lost all engine power. I pulled the car into neutral and attempted to restart it. When the car wouldn't restart I put on my blinker and moved to the right shoulder. I ran the code with my onboard computer and it told me that the cam shaft was in the wrong position. A roll back came and took me to the dealership where I left with the service department. An hour later while I was at work I got a call from the service department letting me know that my timing chain had malfunctioned and threatening me that if they found that I was abusing the engine that they would not honor the warranty and I would be paying for this problem out of pocket. . 21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

I was driving on the interstate at approximately 65mph when a small pop was heard from the engine bay. The engine immediately stopped functioning and I lost all power to the vehicle. I was able to safely stop the vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate without incident. I tried restarting the engine, which just caused the starter to run for 5+ seconds before turning off the start sequence (push button start). The dealership said the cause has been determined to be a snapped timing chain and broken plastic chain guide. This is a 2010 5. 7l mds auto transmission Challenger. Dodge's response is to replace the chain and guide and see if that enables the engine to run. This is an interference fit engine which will mean several valves will have struck the piston heads as a result of the timing chain breaking. In addition, the valve heads and piston heads may have sustain additional damage. The dealership had recommended to Dodge a complete engine replacement. While, I find Dodge's solution to be whole inappropriate, the failure of the chain is of more concern. . Read more...

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Driving on the freeway home late from work at 65 mph, without warning, the engine stopped. No power, no power steering, no power brakes. Put car in neutral to try and restart: would turn over not start. Had to get to the right shoulder expeditiously and was stuck there w/ a concrete barrier to my right. Car would not start, with 18 wheeler big rigs blowing by me at 65 mph stuck in the car. Extreme danger. Had to get it towed 16 mi. To dealer at 8:30 pm. Extreme safety issue to me and commuters around me--dead car, no warning, while driving on the freeway. Please address with Chrysler corp. As this is a known extreme safety issue!!! took to dealer and said the timing chain broke. Huh? at 36,500 mi. ??!! completely unsafe and unacceptable. . Read more...

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2013

Timing chain broke.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2012

While driving on the interstate my Dodge Challenger was traveling between 65-72 mph and a wind noise came through either the driver's side window of the left 1/4 window that does not roll up or down. This hollowing noise has been addressed 7 times and nothing the dealer has done has fixed it. I have been told it is my imagination, the car has no noises, it is not the rear-differential and might just be me. The weather stripping has been replaced, foam has been put in on the left and right side fenders via the wheel well and nothing has fixed the noise. On Saturday of last week, we made a 120 mile trip to see family and the car was put in to cruise position and was set at 72 mph and the noise was almost deafening. I think this should be listed on the reports here and it is an ongoing battle between me and Chrysler.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2012

I have a 2010 Dodge Challenger srt8 with 6. 1l v* hemi engine. 6000 miles on it and in perfect shape. On may 2nd at 1pm I came off the freeway (air conditioner was on) and slowed to 10 mi/hr to make a left hand turn. Power steering went dead than car stooped running. I took it to tempe Dodge and they said they have never heard of this before. I goggled it and find out its been happening with a lot of srt8s and has been reported numerous times; yet tempe Dodge is unaware of it??? really!!!!! this needs addressing now before someone dies!!!! Dodge is not taking this seriously as if they wish it would go away. For a 40k car this is ridiculous!! this needs to be a recall item and it needs to have a root cause analysis completed by Dodge engineers ASAP!!! if this happens at higher speeds or in sharper turn someone will die!! I want an answer. If Dodge does not provide one ASAP I will make it my personal responsibility to be sure no one buys another Challenger without being aware of the incidents in documented form.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

This is the second time in less than 30 days that the challanger r/t has shut off while making a turn at speeds of 25 mph or less. Reference odi id # 10421234 / incident date of 08/19/2011. Wife was making a left hand turn off of a busy street (40 mph speed limit, into my home neighborhood) when the car suddenly dies, steering & brakes go hard, oil pressure light illuminates, and she had to coast to a stop, put the car in park, press the start button (even though dash message said "key fob not found"), car re-starts, and she continued 1/2 mile to our home. I'm not comfortable letting my wife or kids drive this car when the probability of it dying is very possible. I just drove the car up the narrow mountain passes to big bear, CA (8,000 ft elevation) & back 3 days ago, and this could have caused a major accident if it had died and I had lost control on a windy mountain road. How many people have to be injured or die before someone forces Dodge / Chrysler to identify & correct this problem. Car is going to the dealership tomorrow morning, where I expect to get alot of nothing, but atleast my complaints will be intered into the service system.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2011

Engine quit while driving on the freeway with no warning! I was extremely lucky that it didn't quit on one of the back roads I drive every day to work, because there are no shoulders to pull over on, and I will most likely be rear ended when it happens again, and I know it will. . I can tell the failure is going to happen again from my past experience, and I have notified Chrysler several times about it, but they refuse to fix the issue.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2011

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2011

Normal driving conditions, pull up to a stop sign to make a right turn and car just dies. Lose all power, no power steering and incredibly hard to stop the car completely. This is now the 3rd time this has happened, going to the dealership to get it looked at again. This is incredibly dangerous if it were to happen when crossing an intersection instead of at a stop sign. Ive read hundreds of reports like mine on forums and yet Dodge is unaware of this incredibly dangerous situation?? I wont be taking my 1 month old daughter in this car. . .
