4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Mystery shutdown. Intermittent electrical problems-shuts off while driving & lose steering & brakes. Terrifying. I¿m afraid it¿s going to kill me & my passengers. It¿s happened 7-9times, 3x w 5 passengers. Ave 1/10k miles. No common factor (slow, fast, rapid downshift, cornering, straight, side streets, country rds, highways, parking lots). Foot may have been on brake during all. Dealership found nothing wrong/no error codes. Cleaned throttle body & they sent away. Next time throttle body verified clean. July 2012 dealership said no flash to fix. I told them how dangerous it is. They gave me a Chrysler care number to file a complaint/get a case started on it. They wanted srt specialists in the loop. Other electrical bugs- not recognizing the fobs. Fob has been locked in the car twice. Signal drops out while driving & error ¿key fob not detected¿ flashes under the speedometer (pic taken at 70mph on 6/8/15). Summer/fall 2014, after ~4 shutdowns at low speeds, started happening at speeds greater than 45. Dangerous! it died going straight through a busy highway intersection at 45 mph at rush hour-nearly rear-ended. Then it shutoff while making a sharp fast turn at a blind corner; this time I almost slammed into the embankment. I knew I had to get it addressed before it kills me. 1st Chrysler claim 23728724 addressed 9/2014 by replacing pcm. Lost communication w pcm codes found. 2015 spring, shut-down starts again. Took to dealership in merritt island, FL ~9/8/15. Please check for codes, the car was shutting down again. Denied. Told to return to dealership that worked it 1st time. 3rd time 9/25/15, 3 senior engineer passengers when it died during rapid downshift turning event. During re-initialization, car abruptly jerked- passengers scared; inches from serious accident -slamming into a work truck & nearly rear-ended. 2nd claim 27895859 in work unknown.

5 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2015

Car shut off going 65mph on highway with no warning. Would not start again. Towed to local dealership and it took 3 weeks of them not knowing what was wrong after I suggested timing chain several times. They said I needed a new batter, charged me $230 for a battery I did not need . Finally they realized 6 out of 8 heads were bent and timing chain broke. Now when I let off the accelerator it sounds like 10 speed bicycle when peddling backwards. I am scare to take it back since it took 5 weeks last time.

6 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

Timing chain broke while driving. Complete engine shutdown. Had it happened less than 2 miles earlier I would have been at highway speed in rush hour traffic. This a major concern to me because I know of more that 50 cases of timing chain failure on 2009 thru 2011 Challengers with automatic transmissions and the 5. 7l v8 engine.

7 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

My 2010 Challenger srt8 with automatic transmission stalled when making a right-hand turn at approximately 5:00 pm on 9/5/12. Engine was at normal operating temperature and the ac was running. I was travelling at about 35 mph and began braking to make a right turn into a service station. As I started into the turn at about 10 mph, the engine stalled resulting in loss of brakes and power steering. I was able to complete the turn and stop the car with hard brake pressure. No indicator warning lights appeared on the instruments. I put the car in park and restarted the car, but the transmission was inoperative. Neither drive or reverse would engage. I did not notice any warning or alert lights indicating a malfunction or transmission issue. I stopped and restarted the engine again and the transmission engaged and worked normally. There were 6800 miles on car on 9/5/12. The vehicle was purchased 10 days ago, and tsbs were checked before the purchase. No mention of engine shutoff issues are listed on the NHTSA database of tsbs or recalls. I did not check customer complaints. If I had, an knew to check about stalls, I would not have purchased this vehicle. Considering the severity of this issue, the number of complaints on this database, and the fact this issue has been going on for the last 4 or more years, NHTSA should initiate a defect investigation immediately. More than one person has stated on this complaint forum that this is a life threatening condition and hopefully someone doesn't have to die to get Dodge to solve this problem. Too late. Check out complaint 10395526. Apparently someone did. But the complaint doesn't show injury or death and it should be corrected.

8 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

On or about June of 2011 I was driving my car in GA, and the engine just shut off. After contacting the manufacture. Dodge had the car towed to thompson Dodge in thompson GA. I was told there by the head mechanic that my engine suffered a total catastrophic failure . They ( manufacture) decided to rebuild instead of replacing my engine as I had asked. Then on Thursday 11/22/2012 I was driving (60-65 mph) home to NJ from texas. And the engine did the same thing. Leaving me stranded. After the first time I was told that the timing chain broke. I find it hard to believe that a 2010 Challenger will break 2 chains within 2 years. There has to be a underlying cause for this. Please advise me and respond. I can be reached at [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2011

I was making a slow u-turn and the engine shut off (stalled). This actually the third incident since purchasing the vehicle in December. I was pulling on to the freeway from a stop (under 10mph) and the engine shut off (stalled). Also, I was slowing to a red light (under 10mph) and the engine shut off (stalled). I don't have the date and mileage of the first two incidents, so I've given the details of the third.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Car has stalled and shut down 3 times since purchasing it in 08/2010. All three cases the car had just completed a turn onto a busy highway where luckily I was able to coast it, with no power steering, to the side of the road. On all three cases, the only indication I had that the car shut off was that the oil light flashed on. I was able to restart the car easily the first time this happened, but the third time it happened, it would not shift into drive. It finally did it after the third time I tried it. I am very concerned with this problem. I am a female that loves her new car, but my husband is worried about me driving it on the highway if it keeps shutting off. This is a dangerous problem and Dodge needs to get on the ball and figure out what is going on. We have an appointment first thing in the morning with the dealership, but after reading all of the complaints from everyone else, I have little faith they will be able to find out what is going on. Dodge, please fix my car!.

11 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

2 incidents in 2010 srt Challenger of vehicle shutting off for no apparent reason. 1st incident was after stopping at stoplight; oil light flashed briefly then engine shut off. 2nd incident was during a right turn into a shopping center; engine shut off just as pulled off the main road; did not notice any indicator lights as was concerned about vehicles behind me. Both times car was able to be started (keyless pushbutton start) within one or two presses of start button. I have 1760 miles on the car and it has happened twice now. Incidents separated by about 2 months (car purchased 2/2010). Have read on forums about this happening to many other Challengers. Report to NHTSA was recommended to another owner by dealer.

12 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

I just bought a 2010 Dodge Challenger srt8 in June. There has been 4 different occasions where the engine completely shuts off. I brake to turn and the engine shuts down and I see the oil light come on briefly. Luckily, I haven't been rear ended. I took it to the dealership, after keeping it for a week, they came back and said they found nothing wrong with the car. In addition, the headliner for the sunroof hangs down and the dealership tells me that it is on national back order. I am not the only one with this complaint. . . . Does it take a person getting killed before Dodge recalls these cars.
