Fuel tank right side under rear passenger seat has a leak. Every time the vehicle is filled with gasoline, the fuel leak starts and goes away after half the tank is used. It's located right at the top of the fuel pump. The fumes of the gas can be smelled inside the cab because its directly located under the seat. This is an occurring problem with this year of Chargers and is dangerous hazard.
Fuel pump (top) under the rear passenger seat develops leaks and spills fuel into and explosive fumes into the passenger area of the car. In researching the problem on google I'm finding this is a very common problem with the 2011 Dodge Charger. If this is such a widespread and dangerous problem I cannot for the life of me understand why NHTSA has not issued a recall? problem occurs after a fill up. Discoloration on the pump shows the extent/volume of gasoline pouring out into the interior floor pan.
The auxiliary fuel pump fail and leaked into the rear right hand passenger compartment. I have spoken to the dealer and manufacture and no one is willing to help with the very big fire hazard . The leak happens when the car is filled with fuel and the tank has ore the half a tank of fuel.
I have been smelling gas inside of the cabin of my car for a while usually only in the morning or after my car has been sitting a while. Finally this morning, 2/5/2019, the smell was so bad that I had a headache and my eyes were burning and so took it to an auto mechanic shop to look at it. They stated there was a puddle of gasoline sitting on my fuel pump that is under the passenger side seat. That is the side my daughter sits on and she has been complaining of headaches as well. The repair shop said that if I were to have gotten into a wreck and there had been a spark of some sort my car would have gone up in flames because there was a pool of gasoline sitting on the fuel pump.
I smelled gas when I filled my car up with gas. I looked online and seen other complaints and where to find where the smell was coming from. I lifted up the rear seat and there was fuel sitting on top of the fuel pump right under the seat. There is no protection between the seat and fuel pump. So now my check engine light is on which is deactivating my remote start. I feel like this should be a recall and I should not have to pay to have this fixed. It's very dangerous.
Malfunction indicator light has come on twice in past month. First time a vacuum cannister was replaced. The 2nd time I told the dealer that I also smelled gas. I was told the the right fuel pump is "cracked" and a replacement will cost over $900. My car has only 35,000 miles on it. After seeing all of the other complaints about this, why hasn't a recall been issued?.
When I fill my tank, the fuel pump under the back seat on the passenger side over fills and leaks raw gasoline into the cab. I have looked online and found hundreds of people with 2011 and 2012 Chargers with the same problem. Second I had a head light go out on the passenger side. I replaced the bulb and still isn't working, checked the fuses and those are, good to. Maybe it's a faulty wire harness. Also found people online with the same issue.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Dodge Charger. The contact stated that there had been a strong odor of fuel progressing outside the vehicle, inside the vehicle however there was no presence of an external link. The dealer (benson Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram, 400 w wade hampton blvd, greer, SC 29650, (864) 877-0161) stated that both fuel pumps needed to be replaced after inspecting that there was a crack on one of two fuel pumps which were near the rear back seat. The padding was saturated with fuel which and leaked into the rear interior with no warning. The dealer replaced the left and right side fuel pump however, the contact was uncertain as to why the plastic had cracked, if the material was structurally unsound and if the same oem parts had been replaced without an newly designed oem part from the manufacturer. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had issued 3 fuel system TSB but no fuel system recall to address the structural failure with the plastic fuel pumps (2). The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.
When driving down the interstate (August 2017 with 130k miles on the dash) I suddenly lost throttle response and I could not accelerate. At this point motor began to shake as I coasted to the edge as my car shut off while still in the run position. A red lighting bolt appeared and my vehicle did not want to start. After attempting to start several times the car finally started. Took it to a dealer in garden city michigan where they could find nothing wrong. The lighting bolt light was gone and only a check engine light remained. Fast forward two months later the same thing happened but I could not get the car to start and it was towed to the same dealer with a dead battery this time. They kept it for several days but could not pin point the issue I. E. Bad throttle body, bad fuel pumps etc. However no codes were found because the battery died. The week before thanksgiving same situation, lost throttle response car shut off got the red bolt , battery died. Towed to aaa where I had to purchase a new battery and again no codes were found. Again this happened today while on the interstate traveling at about 80mph. Are there any tips or documentation of similar problems with the red bolt light? ive had dealership mechanics with 30+ years experience get lost with this issue. They have comes up with options but nothing concrete. I will soon be force to start guessing and checking or just get rid of the vehicle all together.
For two years now, fuel leaks from my tank after every fill up. When stationary it creates a gas puddle. There is a strong fuel smell in my garage when tank is more than half full. Many other 2011 Chargers are having this issue as well. A mechanic online has stated it is due to a cracked auxiliary fuel pump module that should not be this damaged under normal use.
After fueling my vehicle above 3/4ths (but not over full) a fuel leak started causing extreme fuel vapors to be present inside and outside of car. Even when the car is not being driven (while vehicle is turned off). The fumes are so strong that they fill my garage and can be smelled from 40 - 50 feet away and I have to drive with the windows down. This is a serious safety concern. Many other forums have been read for me to realize this is not an isolated incident, is common among this make/model/year, and should be cause for a recall for safety reasons before something bad happens (fire, explosion, etc). Most say the observed a leak in front of the rear passenger tire. Others have said they pulled out the back seat to access the fuel pump and have found gas sitting on top of the fuel pump. I have not had this looked at by a mechanic/dealership yet, but wanted to ensure this is reported and needs to pushed for recall consideration.
When tank is filled, a strong fuel odor occurred inside car, along with a puddle directly in front of right rear tire. Dealership first "fixed" secondary fuel pump but problem recurred at next fill up. Subsequently the primary fuel pump was replaced. It is extremely fortunate this did not result in a fire or death with my kids riding in this car on a daily basis. Dodge knows about issue as tons of complaints can be found on line. . Read more...
On July 11th 2016 I filled up my gas tank immediately afterwards while driving I noticed an overwhelming smell of gasoline. 5 days later the check engine light came on. The code detected a small evap system leak. The check engine light sporadically illuminates and then turns off on its own. The smell of gasoline goes away when the tank is half full. When the tank is full, gasoline drips directly in front of the passenger rear tire. Upon researching the problem on the internet I discovered on carcomplaints. Com that over 40 people have complained of this same issue. The fuel pump continues to pump gas once the car is turned off. The gas tank leaks when the tank is over half way full. According to other complaints on carcomplaints. Com Chrysler and Dodge have been notified of this same problem multiple times. Dodge and Chrysler refuse any knowledge of this issue even though they redesigned the fuel system after the 2011 and also recalled the hemi model for the same issue. Chrysler/Dodge has yet to recall the fuel system on my v6 model. I don't feel safe driving my car. Can an investigation be opened on this issue since there is 50 complaints online that date all the way back to 2012? a gas tank shouldn't not "wear-out" and leak after 5 years. . . . Does someone have to die or become severely injured for something to be done about this issue? many people complained of alternator issues, it took a fire to occur for Chrysler to finally recall the alternator on the Dodge Chargers. It seems that Chrysler Dodge is just waiting for a catastrophic event to occur before they decide to recall this issue. . . Thats what it took for Chrysler to issue a recall on the alternator, even though there were numerous complaints recorded!.
I purchased a 2011 Dodger Charger 1week ago from texan Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram in humble TX. I test drive the car on a half tank of gas no problem at the time until I decided to buy the car off a trade in. Deal went great im on my way back houston I notice the gas tank is full know 20 min into the ride I start smelling gas. So I roll the window down got home lift up the back seat I notice the gas smell has gotten stronger now iam looking at the fuel pump with gas on top one spark hole car could have blew up. . . These mechanic are a f. . K. . Joke what ever happen to safercars . .
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Charger. While the vehicle was parked, the contact smelled a strong odor of fuel inside and outside the vehicle continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that an accumulation of fuel leaked onto the fuel pump. The mechanic placed an o-ring onto the fuel pump. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,718.
2011 Dodge Charger with 85,000 miles has strong fuel odor inside the vehicle and on the outside rear passenger panel. Panel code indicated evaporation leak. Dodge tech found fuel pump seal leaking vapor into cabin and fuel under rear passenger seat. Tech replaced the fuel pump and o-rings at a total cost of $525.
2011 Dodge Charger / 82,000 miles: leaking fuel pump/component on passenger side. After a routine fill up an extremely strong odor of gasoline was present inside of the car and outside of the car. Pool of gasoline present near rear tire when vehicle is parked. Removal of backseat revealed a large puddle of gasoline on top of the gas tank. Fuel pump o-ring was replaced but to my disappointment problem persists. Contacted Dodge about issue but they said there were currently no recalls associated with fuel pump equipment and could not point me towards a culprit. Even at less than half a tank the smell is overbearing causing headaches making the car a literal pain to drive. There is a battery cable running in close proximity to the pool of gas and the gas drips below around hot exhaust. I do not feel safe driving the vehicle this way due to the risk of fire or explosion. This is a static component and I feel that it should not simply wear out. There is another issue here that is causing this to happen. Next items to check will be fuel pump and tank itself. Even if issue is resolved I fear that the smell will remain for some time. Really unfortunate for a vehicle that is still being paid for. I hope this gets addressed soon as the fuel pump or fuel tank are not cheap fixes. There seems to be quite a few of identical complaints on here as well as other forums. Logging a complaint now in case a fire occurs that destroys the car, property or injury. Its encouraging to see other have reported the same failure but I cannot locate any recall information.
Filled up with gas and had a strong smell in car after checking I found out that the gas tank was leaking around the fuel pump seal had it replaced and still leaks if you fill above 3/4 tank this is a fire hazard due to gas leaking on the ground if someone dropped a cig. On the ground where the gas is it could explode and the fumes inside the passenger compartment cant be good for your health,I feel like this is a problem that Chrysler should have to fix . I just purchased the car 11/23/2015.
My Dodge Charger has about a 43,000 miles and I noticed a gasoline odor in my car, so I stopped to look to see if gas was leaking for my car and it was leaking gas coming from the rear passenger side. I had my care towed to my near by mechanic shop and they found that the leak was coming from my fuel pump. I called Dodge to report the issue and they said, its not under warranty. This is unsafe to have gas leaking from a car and especially with just 43,000 miles on the vehicle.
After refill inside of the vehicle showed heavy gas smell. Check engine light appeared and disappeared randomly. After 2nd refill gas smell returned. Local dealer suggested evap canister replacement. When checking more thorough it showed during regular idle fuel pump on passenger rear was leaking during pressure build up. Once filled gas started dripping behind right rear wheel near hot exhaust pipe. Afraid that vehicle could catch fire due to battery wiring being located in immediate area of leak.
After a repair of the alternator at the end of September and beginning of October 2014, a fuel pump replacement also in October 2014, and the recall replacement of the alternator in June 2015, the check engine soon light on my Dodge Charger lit up again in August 2015. I took it into the dealership for yet another repair only for them to run the check engine light diagnostic and found another fuel system leak. However, they were not able to schedule me for a repair until September 1, 2015. After taking the Charger in for repair, further diagnostic discovered the fuel filler tube was at fault and a replacement was necessary. I have had it repaired and two days later the check engine soon light has lit back up. I had to travel for work so I will update with my next complaint once it has been diagnosed.
Leaking gas from top of tank or fuel pump.
Filled gas tank on way to work. Got in car to go to lunch and noticed a strong gas smell. Called my husband (he is an ase certified master tech, gm master tech. ) he informed me there must be a fuel leak. Then the check engine light came on, he put his scanner on it and it pulled a code of p0496 (small leak detected). The smell would go away when the gas level was under 1/2 tank. Would only fill to 1/2 after that. After a week or so the smell would come back with only 1/2 tank of gas. The check engine light has stayed on all this time. Husband pulled the rear seat out on July 11th to discover fuel pooling from the right rear passenger fuel module, the gas was leaking through the plastic. Contacted the Dodge dealership and they were unaware of any problems like this. July 12th we ordered a new bosch premium fuel pump (part# 67774). On July 17th I ran the fuel down so only 1 gallon was left in tank. Let the car sit for 2 hrs. Husband removed the main pump, which fell apart. Upon removing the primary fuel pump (right side) the pressure was so strong it blew fuel all over him and the interior of the back seat. The pump holds fuel pressure for way to long after it is turned off. Not to mention that there is only 2 pieces of plastic/foam between the fuel pumps and the back seat. That, in itself is dangerous. Is the excessive pressure what caused the plastic fuel pump to crack and allow the fuel to pool on top? I love my car but am very afraid to drive it now. I am not only concerned for my safety but also the safety of anyone sitting in the backseat (kids/grandkids). What if I get rear ended and there is a spark that ignites the pooled fuel, will Chrysler then issue a recall for this problem after my car explodes? there are several complaints on this website for the same issue. Can't the NHTSA do something to help?.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Charger. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph, the battery power save mode warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the battery and alternator would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that fuel fumes were present inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that a seal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who replaced the fuel pump and fuel tank. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,000.
A week after my initial repair/replacement on the alternator (not covered under recall at the time) of my Charger, the check engine light came on and you could smell gas through the ac system. I took the car into the dealership garage and they scanned the check engine system which returned a minor leak, but due to the fuel smell, they advised I do not drive the car and leave it with them for repair. After further diagnostic I needed to get the right side fuel pump replaced on the car.
The morning of July 5, 2013 I started my car and allthe dash lights came on. It had done this once before but only for a second and then all was fine. This time they didn't turn off and when I started to drive it was making "whining" noise. I called the dealership and told them what was going on. They told me to drive to the dealership right away. They called later that afternoon to tell me it was the alternator was bad and causing a short. Since the car was past 36,000 miles it's not covered under warranty! it cost me about $800 to replace the alternator. I'm not sure what the exact problem was with the alternator, but I just had it at the dealershp a month prior for an oil change and they "said" the car checked out fine. I have had numerous issues with this car! 35,5019 miles, they replaced 3 of the 6 pistons, thankfully it was under warranty. 45,778 miles, the alternator failed. Around 50,000 miles, one of the fuel pumps needed to be replaced because it was cracked on the top. The car smelled like gas for a month after fixing it. The mechanic that replaced it said he has never seen them brake like that and it was very odd. Recently at about 57,000, we replaced the actuator in the diver side a/c unit. The noise started about 6 months prior but financally we were unable to repair it until now. It is past the milage for lemon law but Dodge should not leave the consumer to pay for their mistakes and poor quality.
Passenger side fuel pump leaking on top of tank. With internet research found this to be a common problem due to poor quality plastic cracking. Contact a dealer not under recall.
