3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 01/19/2014

The first time my wifes 2006 Dodge Charger car shut off/stalled after we filled up the car, I thought it may have been some bad fuel. But no way - as I have filled the car several times now and the same thing happens regardless of where we get the fuel. Last night, I filled the 2006 Dodge Charger gas tank on a trip and was getting back onto the highway and the car stalled. . . . Lost power steering, etc. . . Had to quickly place in neutral and restart. . . Then put into drive and it was okay for a few moments. Then the car started sputtering and stalled again. I pulled to the side of the intestate 75 and came to a complete stop. Had a hard time cranking it, but then it did crank. I started to pull off and it stalled again. After the 3rd time I was able to continue down the highway for about 2 miles and it started sputtering. It did this about 4-5 times and then ran okay. I drove on home, which was about 40 miles and figured that the stalling problem was behind us (at least we fill up again). This morning my wife took the car to go to the gym and she had to turn around as the car kept stalling. It is definitely worse right after the car is filled up with fuel, and sometimes it shuts off in the gas station parking lot.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

2006 Dodge srt8 6. 1 repeatedly stalls after filling with gasoline. Vehicle is difficult to start after. Car sputters at speed for first 30 miles on full tank.

5 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/29/2013

This is not the first time this has happened and this is flat out dangerous! after driving all day I was almost out of gas so I stopped at one of my regularly used gas stations. As like I always do when I get gas I got a full tank and I do not overfill, once the handle pops I'm done pumping. Vehicle started fine and I drove off the gas station with no problems. Once on the main road I approached my first turn and in mid turn going about 20mph my vehicle just stalled,no warning or nothing it just randomly stalled. Once the car rolled off the main street I put it in park and tried to start it up again. No luck, the vehicle wouldn't start. It took a few tries but managed to get it running again. To my surprise I didn't have a check engine light so I sat there for a while revving the engine and even shut it off and restarted it, everything seemed fine so I went on my way. Shortly after I drove off it happened again and this time I was just driving straight. From the gas station to my home is about 10min and in that short time frame the vehicle randomly stalled 4 times! this went on for a few days until my fuel lvl was about 3/4 full? after researching online on Dodge forums I was able to find out what may and most likely be the issue with my vehicle. Some say its a collapsed gas tank which affects a check valve in the gas tank that is for the evap system. When you have a full tank and the system opens up to release gas vapors back into the engine it's actually sending raw fuel back into the engine which in turn floods the vehicle and causes the stall. Of course this part can't be replaced or fixed since the tank and those parts are sold as one piece which is big $$$! my only fix for this until this is recalled is I don't get a full tank anymore. This is a serious and dangerous issue which should be recalled immediately before someone gets into a serious accident.

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/14/2013

On 12-14-2013, I filled up the gas tank. I pulled out of the gas station and into traffic and stopped at a red light. While at the red light, vehicle stalled and oil light came on. Turned the corner at the red light and got into my parents subdivision and vehicle stalled again. Got the vehicle started and pulled into the driveway. On 12-15-2013, vehicle stalled close to parents driveway. Attempted to restart. Vehicle would not start on first attempt and on the second attempt, I had to press the accelerator to start the vehicle. Got it started and put the vehicle in the driveway. Notified the dealership the next day and had the vehicle towed. Dealership could not find problem right away and I asked them to look at the rollover (vent) valve in the gas tank. They checked the rollover (vent) valve and found that it was the problem. Got it repaired and the final cost was $1446. 47.

9 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

Vehicle began to misfire and then stalled approximately 1/4 mile after filling fuel tank. This has happened multiple times and is occurring more frequently. This is a serious safety issue since vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection and almost caused an accident. Was able to restart the car and continue to destination. Online forums attribute the cause to a faulty vapor purge valve/evap canister and requires fuel tank replacement.

10 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

Vehicle stalled in the middle of a busy street while driving during rush hour traffic. Luckily no one hit me (especially since I had my daughter in the car). I had just filled up the gas tank (did not overfill--gas is way too expensive for that). Had it towed and the dealer had to replace the fuel tank, o-ring unit, vapor canister, solenoid-proportional purge and some misc. Pins etc. Cost me $1900. 00 out of my pocket with the dealer giving me a 10% service discount. They also informed me that with the vapor canister failing, if you were in a rollover accident the car most likely would catch fire which would definitely decrease your chances of surviving. This is a huge safety concern for anyone that is driving or riding in the vehicle even if it only shuts off. You can not brake or steer when the car shuts off so getting out of harms way is a challenge without getting hit by another vehicle. I see that there are a huge number of complaints regarding this issue and it needs to be put out as a service recall. Not an alert or bulletin but an actual recall. I guess when people start losing their lives and the lives of their loved ones that are passengers then maybe Dodge will do the right thing. I see that there is some info out there that Dodge was extending the warranty on the fuel tank/system and letters were to be sent to the car owners. I have not received anything I honestly believe that I should be reimbursed. Dodge used to have "safety first" on their website. Odd, I don't see that anymore.

11 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/08/2013

Vehicle stalls after filling up fuel tank.

12 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

After fueling the vehicle I drove about 1/4 mile released the gas pedal to make a left turn at a controlled inter section, the motor died during the turn. The car did not restart easily. The car died 3 more times in route to my home which was less than a mile further. This has happened the last 5 or more times I have filled the gas tank. I have owned this car since new and I am the sole driver. I am afraid this may cause an accident in the future if not remedied. Yesterday I spoke to my local Dodge dealership where the car is serviced, I was informed the fix for this is replacing the fuel tank due to a defective part inside of the tank which is not serviceable. I than call the Dodge corp. Customer service number were their agent read a prepared statement regarding the expired warranty. I feel this is a design problem which could lead to a dangerous situation as it becomes increasingly worse. Thank you for this forum.

13 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/28/2013

After fueling car, the engine stalled. Luckily I had not pulled into traffic yet. I was able to restart after a couple of attempts and drive back into the parking lot. The engine stalled again. After that, the car wouldn't start. I had to have it towed to the nearest Dodge dealership. Because it was thanksgiving, and everything was closed, I had to delay my trip a day before continuing on to my destination. The next day the dealership called and said it was running fine and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I had no further problems until Sunday on my way home. I stopped to fill up the tank and it happened again. This time I didn't leave the gas station in fear that it might happen again. I was able to get the car started and keep it idling for about 15 minutes before attempting to drive in traffic. This process took about 2 hours. I continue to have the same issue when filling the tank with gas. I am unable to travel out of town because I don't want to get stranded again and or worse, cause an accident and injure someone. The only tip I can offer that has helped with this issue is to keep the engine running while fueling. I know this is not recommended, but it has helped prevent the engine from stalling after fueling and causing an accident.

14 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/28/2013

Filled up fuel tank on 11/28/13 and on 12/1/13 and about 200 feet after exiting gas station the car stalled, I restarted the car and it drove another few hundred feet and it stalled a couple more times. After reading some article I found this has become a common problem on this car. I feel it should be a safety recall due to the car stalling seconds after pulling out into traffic risking getting rear ended or t boned.

15 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/26/2013

While navigating a parking lot (approx. 5 mph) minutes after filling the gas tank, the engine died. The oil pressure light came on, the rpm gauge dropped to zero and the steering became very difficult to turn. We were able to shift into park and start the car fairly easily, but the engine turned over for several seconds before starting. The engine stalled twice more when leaving the same parking lot and had to be started again each time. We experienced engine hesitation (seemed to lose all power) while driving at about 40 mph on the way home. There were at least four hesitations and we were worried it would die completely. These hesitations have happened twice before and always immediately after filling the gas tank. The severity of the problem seems to be increasing with each incident. We are very concerned that we will stall in a dangerous situation while driving and are now afraid to fill the tank completely. We never "top off" the car's gas tank and always stop fueling after the station pump shuts off automatically.

16 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/19/2013

After filling up with gas this morning, as I accelerated away from the gas station the car began to buck and jerk. It smoothed out for a little while, then after accelerating away from the next stoplight it jerked and made a loud noise. This is heavy suburban traffic, so very stop-and-go. The car began to stall, and only restart if I depress the accelerator all the way to the floor while starting. Go a little bit further, then buck and stall again. Very dangerous! I'm learning through online vehicle forums that this is a relatively common problem with this year/make/model vehicle's gas tank and the integral "roll-over" valve which is supposed to prevent liquid fuel from entering the engine, yet the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge a faulty design that is leading to potentially dangerous situations. Will it take accidents, fires and death to make it a higher priority?.

17 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/17/2013

Since about 4 years ago my 06 Charger daytona has been stalling for unknown reasons. Took it to the dealers only to be told they couldn't find anything wrong. After some research I came to know that Dodge had a real issue with safety concerning the evap system. I was told later that an unserviceable valve on the gas tank was faulty and therefore the gas tank needed to be replaced; its too expensive. It has been very frustrating because the engine stalling after fueling has gotten bad. I've stalled in the middle of a busy road twice and numerous times before a stop or red light. Its only matter of time before some body gets hurt or killed.

18 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

After fueling up my car, I jumped onto the hwy and my vehicle started jerking and then staled on me. I was able to started it back up but it stop on my again. Made it home and everything was fine the next day. I thought I got some bad gas. Then, this kept happening after I would put gas into my tank. I finally took it in, January due to I was almost reared end while taking my daughter to school. I just found out it was the fuel tank and it will cost me 1800 dollars to replace the part.

19 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/12/2013

When I fill my 2006 Dodge Charger up with gas. It will run about 1/4 mile then stop running. It will crank back up. Run just a little ways and stall again. It does this three times. Then runs good until I fill the gas tank up again and it starts to stall the same way . This almost caused me to crash on 75 south. This car does not show any codes called detroit they say that they don't have a problem with this, but on the net hundreds of people are having the same problem.

20 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/11/2013

After filling tank to full and leaving gas station to make a left turn on green, vehicle engine stopped and had to restart twice in order to make the turn safely. Engine continued stalling until after approximately 4 miles it finally stayed running. This same occurrence happened before on several occasions, and read about other 2006 Charger 5. 7 hemi owners having same issues. The car cannot be filled up with fuel completely which is a great inconvenience and danger, especially when you need to enter traffic or make a safe left or right turn. Dodge refuses to repair or acknowledge the issues , cannot get rid of the car and purchase something else as I am a disabled veteran.

21 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

I own a 2006 Dodge Charger srt8 with about 31,000 miles on it. I just got the vehicle on October 25, 2013 and have only had it for a month. A couple weeks after I had the car, I noticed a big problem. My engine would just shut of when I was idling. Usually this would happen when I was stuck in traffic, or at a red light, or at a stop sign at an intersection. The entire car would just shut down immediately and I would have no control over the vehicle. There was no way of being able to tell when this problem would occur because there were no early warning signs such as chugging or noises coming from the engine. It started getting really bad to the point where I need to get it fixed. I was researching online and reading forums and found that this is a known problem with Chrysler engines of this model. Hundreds if not thousands of people like myself have the same problem. Apparently, it is a faulty fuel vapor valve on the top of the fuel tank. The only way to repair it is to replace the entire fuel tank which is going to cost me well over $1000. I want to know why this isn't a safety recall and why it hasn't been.

22 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

On 10/30/13 at approx 9:30am I refueled my '06 Dodge Charger 5. 7l hemi rt/daytona edition @the gas station w/89-octane fuel. As I pulled out of the station @under 15mph, my car stalled-engine died, oil light & bell appeared, & steering locked up. It took 2-attempts the 1st time to restart it w/ it acting like the engine had flooded. I drove approx. 2-blocks & it again stalled (including all of the above) as I was slowing for a stoplight. It took 2-3 attempts to restart. I drove approx 1-1/2blocks, including a slight incline, to a stoplight where it again stalled, though this time immediately restarted. After driving 3-blocks more, as I slowed for a stoplight it again began to sputter & buck as though going to stall; I cont'd to brake but maintained pressure on the accelerator attempting to maintain rpms & oil pressure; however as I turned the corner it again stalled & took 4-attempts to restart. After sitting for 15mins I had no other issues this date. Today(11/25/13) I refueled & experienced the sputtering, bucking, stalling, engine dying, oil light, zero oil psi, etc w/ 10-full stalls(engine failure episodes) in less than 20-mins. After allowing it to sit for 2+ hours the engine didn't fully die but did buck several times on the drive home. There was at least 1 add'l day between 10/30/13 & 11/25/13 that I experienced the same problems. All stalls have happened at 35mph or less. Prior to the problems after refueling, I was having problems filling the gas tank. I attempted to refuel the car & the auto pump shutoff engaged after less than 1/2-gal entering the tank; the auto pump shutoff would engage 3-5xs per refuel & required multiple readjustments of the pump nozzle to fill my gas tank. I haven't had the car in for diagnostics b/c of the neg reports on the forums indicating diagnostics show no discernible problems. Sounds like TSB#1803015 to me.

23 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

My car stalled less than 1 mile after pulling out of a gas station after filling up with gas. It took several tries to restart before successfully able to drive again. I thought bad gas. But it now happens every time after I fill my tank full of gas. My car's rpms will sputter for the first couple miles after filling up with gas. It also stalls every time driving within the first 2 miles of filling up with gas. It is very scary driving with my family in the car and fearing that my car will stall in the middle of an intersection and cause a major accident. There is no check engine light or diagnostic codes for this. Just the oil light comes on and the engine dies, power steering fails, and abs are not working.

24 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

On 10/30/13 my 2006 Dodge Charger stalled on a major street without any warning. I had just filled the gas tank and was driving back to work. I had reached a speed somewhere between 40-50 when the car just stopped in the middle of the road. I was able to get it started and pull into a nearby parking lot and shut it off. I was shaken by the event, after collecting my thoughts I tried to re-start the car thinking if I let it idle for a bit it might be alright. The car ran momentarily then sort of choked and jolted then died. I tried once more but to no avail then had it towed to the dealer for service. They called the following day stating that they couldn't find anything wrong with it and we could pick it up. This same scenario happened twice before about this same time last year on two separate occasions. Stalling several times at various speeds in both incidences. Every time this happens I have just filled the tank using premium fuel. I spoke with the service manager and he didn't seem to be aware of a problem. I told him there are currently 54 claims all with the same problem and there definitely is a problem and I pray that someone finds a solution before some is seriously injured or killed. I no longer feel safe in my 2006 Dodge Charger.

25 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

I just finished refueling almost to full. Vehicle started perfectly. Drove approximately 2 blocks at 15 mph when the vehicle suddenly stalled and shut off. It took 3 attempts to restart. I drove approximately 4 more blocks at 15 mph when the vehicle suddenly stalled and shut off again. I had the vehicle towed to the repair shop that I use. The mechanic at the shop drove the vehicle. The vehicle stalled and shut off 2 times while the mechanic drove it. Vehicle was scanned for codes. No codes were displayed. The mechanic cleaned out the throttle body. Vehicle has been operating perfect since that time. One other note. One month prior, with 3/4 tank of fuel, fuel gauge suddenly dropped to empty and chiming sound began ringing for approximately 10 seconds. Vehicle did not stall or shut off. Fuel gauge then suddenly returned to 3/4 full and chiming sound stopped ringing.

26 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/16/2013

Car stalls and cuts off after refueling. I always put 89 octane or higher gasoline in my vehicle. This is a severe safety issue because you can get rammed from behind when in traffic I. E. Washington, DC area the busiest streets in America. The dealer suggested the consumer spend $1800 to replace the fuel tank. Updated 02/06/14.

27 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

After filling up gas tank, without over filling by rounding off, the car will stall out within 1/4 mile of running. It takes time cranking engine to start, then will buck and stall occasionally until it is driven at least 2-3 miles. All power steering and brakes are lost at this time as well.

28 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

It stated in October, I filled up my gas tank and was driving home and the car stalled out when coming to a stop. Did think anything of it and restarted my car, got to my house and I was slowing down to turn in it stalled out again. Waited for about 15mins and went out and started the car in the garage started the car and let it run and as it ran it died while in idle. I was glad I was only a mile from my home and very little traffic at the time, with the lose of power to the car I could cause an accident. I do not fill the tank all the way since its the only time this happens. I have filled up my car only one more time after that to see if it was consistent, and it was. It happens at idle and when slowing down city speeds. I will not get on the highway for my safety and others. I have not drive my car unless it is absolutely necessary.

29 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/03/2013

On or about 03 October 2013, the engine (5. 7l hemi) stalled going at 30-35 mph. The engine service light came on, but disappeared when I restarted the engine. Since that day, I have experienced multiple engine stall incidents (about 10 times) usually at a traffic stop being idle or approaching a stop, and during reverse. In November, while cruising on a highway, the engine acted as if to stall again with all the lights and chiming on the evic on and off, but did not stall probably due to the momentum or inertia. At that time, I had my entire family (size of four) with me in the vehicle and feared for their safety. I went to multiple Chrysler dealers and service centers, but could not prevent the problem from reoccuring again. It appears from my online research and reading other complaints on NHTSA website that the symptoms I am experiencing are probably consistent with the faulty sensor in the fuel tank.

30 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

Within 15 miles after filling the gas tank, the car just stops running with no warning. It has happened 3-4 times. So far we've been lucky and haven't been hit, but I'm afraid we will get rear ended soon.

31 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

This has happened multiple times and seems to be increasing in frequency. When at idle, for example at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, the engine has stalled. This happened again last night as well as this morning and it has me concerned. I have read that others complain of this happening with a full tank but that is not true for me. I never have over-filled the tank and even with it being a little over 1/2 full currently and it has stalled twice. I've found the active investigation (pe13016) and would like to be added to that group please. Please let me know what else I can provide to help with this investigation and possible resolutions. Thanks!.

32 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

My car has begun stalling immediately after filling up the tank. Originally thought it was bad fuel the first two times it happened but I have now had this occur 5 or 6 times. The first couple miles after leaving the gas station, the car will stall both while idling at a red light, and while accelerating. .

33 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Raw fuel entered the fuel canister, which made the engine rich and stalled.

34 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 04/28/2013

I refueled the gas tank with high octane gas, and while driving the short distance home, the engine stalled three times. This made braking difficult and scary, as I was in traffic. Each time it started back up, but left me very afraid of wrecking from possibly not being able to stop the car.

35 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Dodge Charger

Failure Date: 04/16/2013

Vehicle stalled when driving shortly after fueling. Engine started again after cranking for several seconds, but strong smell of gasoline after starting. No further problems with the vehicle until the next refuel. This has been happening repeatedly after refueling ever since the original incident on the date given. This may have been happening periodically over the past 2 years, but before this it was infrequent enough that we really didn't pay any attention to it. We never top off the tank, stopping fueling after the nozzle initially clicks off.
