I bought the subject pickup in 2014, I found after driving it that the engine would lose power, wouldn't idle smoothly, and it would backfire thru the throttle body electronic fuel injection. The problem was and is intermittent, it sometimes happens when pulling into traffic, making me trying to pull over to the curb. I took it the local Dodge dealership [rocky top Dodge, sevierville TN] to have it fixed, they tuned it up, cleaned the throttle body and a few other things and said it was ok. I paid them $650+, pulled out of the dealership, and there it was doing the same thing. I immediately turned around went back to the dealership, they kept it for 4 more days, then told me they didn't know what the what was and couldn't fix it. I been driving just about everyday since with this problem. I tried contacting Dodge, they were suppose to have a regional rep contact me, that never happened. It just amazes me that I am the only person in the country having this problem. I did take it upon myself to change all of the engine sensors, that costs me $300 to do it myself. I am just highly frustrated with Dodge that they can't tell me what's wrong with this truck and fix it. I need help since it's a safety issue.

While traveling at highway speeds, vehicle lost all power and would not restart, leaving me stranded in 50 mph traffic. Upon researching various Dodge Dakota sites on the internet, this seems to be a very common problem that is expensive and time consuming to fix.
: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked, there was a strong odor of gasoline present. Upon initial inspection, no leaks were detected. The contact alerted the dealer who instructed the contact to start the engine and upon doing so, flames erupted from the engine compartment. The fire quickly spread consuming the vehicle. No injuries were sustained, but the vehicle was a total loss. The fire department was alerted, and extinguished the flames. The police were on the scene and a report was taken. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where a factory representative inspected the vehicle. The findings of the inspection were not divulged. The manufacturer was notified.
: the contact stated the vehicle is a four wheel drive and the oil pan on the vehicle sits below the truck frame. The oil pan is to close to the ground and does not have a skid plate therefore, debris punctures the pan. The manufacture has been alerted but stated there are know recalls for the failure therefore, no repairs have been made.
At 42000 miles the oil pressure gauge started dropping at the top of a hill. In less then a minutes the truck shut itself down. I drifted down the hill and tried to start it. There was no response. I called the dealer and had it towed. They requested all receipts for oil changes and ordered a new engine. They had said that thier mechanic put a breaker bar on it and couldn't move the engine. It had seized. When the new engine arrived a week later the mechanic went out to pull it in to swap engines. He forgot and tried to start it and it started right up. They called me and told me to pick it up that there was nothing wrong with it. At 52000 miles my engine began knocking. I took it to the dealership garage. Before even touching the vehicle the garage requisted all oil change receipts. Which I supplied to them. After removing the oil pan the service manager informed me that there were pieces of bearings in the oil pan and that the engine had to be replaced for "around" $5200. He then stated that my extended warranty would not cover it due to sludge in the bottom of the oil pan. He believed the oil to be changed "incorrectly".
