42 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 11/07/2003

Transmission goes into high gear too soon, causing too much downshifting when I need to speed up. It goes into o/d at 45 mph. Very sluggish when I need to speed up unless I give it lots of throttle and then it drops out of overdirve and skips 4th gear and goes into 3rd. In town when you get up to 30 mph the transmission pops like it is trying to downshifting straight to 1st. I have had it to the dealer 3 times with no results. I feel they are trying to wear me out so I will quit coming back.

Have owned 02 ram 1500 quad cab short bed for over a year now. After purchasing in Aug 02 had immediate problems with front end vibration/skip. Dealership replaced 3 sets of rims and 4 sets of tires, skip seams to be gone. However, continue to have vibration/shake at 40 mph and above, seems as if it is a drive train or engine problem but milton Dodge in milton florida states there is no problem. 50 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/25/2003

I stopped the truck and put in the park position, I then came out of the truck, closed the door and the truck started to move in the reverse direction, I ran after the truck to see if I could stop it but the reverse speed was to fast for me and the truck hit the tree damaging the rear bumper and I fell back injuring my back. Checked the position of the shift after above incident to see the pointer position above "r". I tried several times to duplicate the same symptom without any success. This I know for certain you can not get out of the truck when it is in reverse.

51 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Dodge Dakota

On full throttle acceleration the automatic transmission will not up shift from 1st to 2nd. Chrysler states that is not a defect and is normal.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/23/2003

Unsafe condition involving the automatic transmission manifested itself at approximately 4,000 miles. While driving the vehicle the automatic transmission will enter overdrive mode at approximately 45-50mph. Once this occurs the vehcile will no longer respond to light or moderate throttle pressure. If you apply a heavier pressure then the vehiclee drops down into passing gear and takes off. This presents a very unsafe and hazardous condition when attempting to enter a limited access highway or passing another vehicle, in that the vehicle power and acceleration is lost at the precise moment that the transmission drops into overdrive. The dealers fix was to replace the automatic transmission. Unfortunately the new transmission has developed the same problem after only 3,000 miles. The new transmission also does not shift properly from 1st to 2nd gear when starting up in the morning. The engine revs and gains rpms but the transmission does not upshift until the vehicle has travelled 4-5 blocks.

53 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/12/2003

Truck will not shift properly when going up grade. Engine will rev at 4500-5000 rpm but will not shift until I slightly release the gas pedal. Truck will also perform multiple hard up shifts when in cruise control going up grade. . . Had the truck in for service 3 times. First time in may, 1 month after purchase, the dealer reprogrammed the computer with a "flash update" and adjusted throttle linkage. That was no help. Several months later I took it in for the same problem, and dealer found nothing wrong. The third time, January 2004, I took a technician for a test drive, and he agreed that the truck was not shifting properly. They replaced the "valve body" in the transmission and the problem has now gotten worse. They informed me that the truck is now having problem shifting out of park. They claim they need to replace the same part they just installed, they say it must have been a defective "valve". Furthermore, the technician is now saying the original shifting problem is normal because Dodge reprogrammed the transmission to avoid multiple up & down shifting when going up a grade. This was down to put "less stress" on the transmission. Doesn't make sense, Dodge is saving the transmission by making it work less and destroying the engine by letting it rev at 5000 rpm. . . . . P. S. This shifting problem has been occurring since the day I drove the truck off the lot.

54 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

We purchased a new 2002 Dodge Dakota quad in Dec. '02. Within a few days, we noticed when first starting up in the morning, it clunked when putting in reverse, and it did not shift from 1st gear until we had gone 3-4 blocks. The engine was revving and the rpm's were increasing but the truck would not shift up to 2nd gear. We have taken it back to the dealer twice and they tell us they can find nothing wrong, which I know is not true.

56 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Transmission not shifting properly. Shifts at 35 mph and then winds out to 55 mph or more and will not shift until you take foot off gas slightly. 61 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

The steering column starting squeaking, and the shift stick would wiggle a little while in gear. Then one of the next times I went to go move the truck I put it into reverse, stepped on the gas and it shifted itself into drive. Also, when driving it, when I turn the wheel it would change gears. 70 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/11/2001

I own a Dodge Dakota quad cab 2001 5. 9 v8 the brakes have always sucked. The front rotors warped over and over again I'm forced in buying a bigger kit that will cost me $3,000. The rear end leaks and the dealer says its natural. These two problems have been with me for 6 months after purchase. I will not buy another Dodge again. I think the transmission is going now and the steering pump is going too. The truck has 66,000 miles now. It looks nice but hp , brakes and over all performance sucks. If I was in the creative end working for Dodge I could improve their vehicles greatly.
