An existing NHTSA recall, 06v039000, exists for 2006 Dodge Dakotas. "static can disable headlamps, turn signals, & windshield wipers". I have a 2001 Dakota with the same issue. It happen 2-5 times per year. Everything works again if I cycle the ignition, but that 's small comfort if the headlights go out @ 75 mph. Dodge has refused to fix it for free, saying that it only applies to 2006. If it is a safety issue for a 2006, then it is a safety risk for 2001 too. The known fix is to "re-flash" the dash, which I assume means to reprogram the dash control processor.

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Dakota. While cleaning out the vehicle, the contact was able to move the drive gear shift without the key in the ignition. The contact owns three other Dodge Dakota's and none of them have experienced this type of failure. The failure and current mileages were 40,000. Updated 01-11-08. The consumer was told there parts broken in the steering column. Updated 12//12/07.
Front left door snapped off. I can't open the drivers door from the inside. Also, both seat belts snapped, the air and heat doesn't work, the brakes locked up, which affected the steering. The transmission was replaced three timed, the vehicle would loose power and the engine would die. The catalytic converter rattled. There was a rough idle and then the vehicle would stall. The cruise control was inoperative, the tires wore out prematurely. Also, I had difficulty getting the vehicle out of park. The idler arm is in the process of breaking, the ignition broke after the keys became stuck, the fuel pump failed and the bearing and bushing needs to be replaced.
I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab. Problem: the key, once inserted into the ignition it will not rotate and thus not start the truck. It is as if the ignition is locked up. After removing, reinserting, and trying to start the truck numerous times, it finally will start. It does not do this everytime, but in the past month it has happened close to a dozen times. Has this been reported before, and what needs to be done to fix this frustrating problem?.
This issue occurs intermittenly, while pulling forward into my parking place, I shifted the truck into reverse and it stalled. I restarted the vehicle in park and shifted to reverse then again ahifting into drive and the engine stalled again. This happened three times in one week. Each time was after driving at least 15 miles so the vehicle was heated up. This could be a major issue especially while backing down my jet skis into the water. I have taken the vehicle into Dodge for warranty repair and after 2 days, they said they have yet to reproduce or diagnose the issue.

40,000 miles transmission problems. Would not shift correctly from first to second. 45,000 miles iginition problems. Short in the ignition, car would do nothing. Not start, no lights, nothing. 50,000 miles and the ball joints went out. I was told by two different mechanics at the Dodge dealership that this was a problem with Dakota's and durangos and that the ball joints used on those two cars were very weak and not strong enough to handle the vehicle.
While driving the consumer noticed smoke coming from the ignition. The consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic who informed the consumer that the ignition needed to be replaced which had since been replaced six times. Please provide further details.
