Found u-joints on steering shaft failing. Able to turn steering wheel 1/8th turn with no response from vehicle. Previously owned a 1998 v6 Dakota and a 1998 v8 Dakota with identical problem. Replaced the steering shaft on all three vehicles. I understand Ford crown victorias/ Mercury grand marquis/ Lincoln towncars have a recall for a similar condition on their steering shafts.

5 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

Steering in any direction becomes very difficult, indicating problems with the power steering system. I suspect a replacement of the intermediate arm/shaft will become necessary as the dealer has commented that it is a very popular item of replacement for this truck. I am scheduled for service tomorrow at the dealer for repair. I do not believe that the steering should fail under normal driving conditions.

6 Steering Failed problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 05/08/2009

I own a 1998 Dodge Dakota pickup truck I have been experiencing a looseness in the steering. The steering was looked at by a mechanic who showed me that my intermediate steering linkage was failing and could come apart, causing a complete loss of steering. The mechanic told me that this was a common problem in Dakotas and durangos. I checked with the dealer service dept. And was told that it happened so often that they couldn't keep the part in stock. Salvage yards don't even like to sell this part used because they fail. I checked with Chrysler/Dodge and there is no recall. This is a very dangerous defect that could cause a serious accident. Dodge doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. I've read stories on the net from others with this problem. Thank you.

7 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/03/2009

I started having difficulty to steering my vehicle. As each day passed it became more and more difficult to turn the steering wheel. It felt as if it had no steering wheel fluid. And by January I could barely turn the wheel at all. I could barely make a turn. This occurred every day and I was afraid I was going to have an accident. I changed the steering fluid and the tires thinking that was the problem. Brought it to the dealer last week who replaced the steering shaft. I have never heard of a steering shaft failure before in a vehicle.

8 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/29/2008

Steering began to feel loose and heard a clunk infront end. Ball joints were bad and had to be replaced. After work was completed still had steering issues. Dealer said that it was normal, local mechanic found that the intermediate steering shaft was failing. When it was removed to be replaced the lower u-joint came apart. Imagine that happening at 55 mph.

10 Steering Failed problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 10/05/2002

2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab v8 currently with 45, 000 miles. First noticed steering problems at 18,000 miles. The truck makes noise over bumps and when turning. Brought truck in for seat repair and to check steering at 35,000 miles. Mechanic performed front end alignment. Problems still persisted. Also, the brake rotors were warped at 18,000 miles and caused a pulsating feel in the pedal. The truck now feels as if it will fall apart over bumps and feels as if I will loose control of the vehicle on the highway. The vehicle warranty is now expired but I need this problem fixed. I have read of many complaints in Dodge trucks as well as their cars of premature steering failure.
