1 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/14/2015

It has been confirmed. I have received a second opinion and have been told intermediate drive shaft needs to replaced. I have researched this problem and am totally confused as to why chrystal has not yet issued a recall on this faulty part, it has been an ongoing issue for many Dodge owners. All NHTSA needs to do is search it online. So many complaints and yet no action has been taken. I have written/ emailed to Dodge corp. And was told that recalls need to be processed through NHTSA. Please anyone else having this problem file a complaint so Dodge will finally do something about it!.

2 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2005 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

2005 Dakota club cab. Consumer writes in regards to problems with vehicle gears and rear axles. The consumer stated when he applied the accelerator, from a stopped position, the vehicle lurched slightly forward and a high pitched whining sound emitted from the vehicle. The consumer then realized, he didn't have any gears. He was able to drift the truck off the road, since he was on a slight upgrade. The truck was towed to a repair shop. An inspection revealed, the pinion gear had metal fatigue and fractured on the shaft behind the spline and ahead of the gear.

3 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

In reference to odi complaint 10224785. . . I have experienced the same failure on my vehicle twice. It is the same make and model, that being 04' Dakota. I believe the issue is known to Dodge as they have a very small notation in the owner's manual in reference to the steering shaft. At present this failure seems to occur every 2nd spring (after spring thaw and wet roads), and in my opinion it's due to a lack of grease fittings on the steering linkage. Aftermarket replacement parts have these "grease tips", however the standard Dodge supplied parts do not. It is an extreme safety issue as it occurs without warning and simulates the feeling of complete power steering loss. Personally it almost resulted in 2 accidents, however I was able to correct my vehicle before any oncoming traffic became involved. As I am canadian I have filed a report with transport canada, however felt it important to report to odi as well.

4 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

2002 Dodge Dakota front end failure. When the consumer was maneuvering a curve the power steering failed and the vehicle hit a guard rail. The truck sustained some front bumper damage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they replaced the steering shaft. The consumer still hears a popping noise when making sharp turns. The consumer plans to take the vehicle to another dealer for a second opinion. The consumer believes that since Dodge is have problems with their suspension that the dealer needs to look at the ball joint, tie rods, rack and pinion.
