My wife was sitting in the passenger seat and got hit in the back of head by the headrest. I was driving approximately 45mph on a city street when it deployed violently for no reason whatsoever. We have never been in an accident with this vehicle so there's no reason this should have happened. It gave her a pretty good headache too.
Front passenger seat headrest deployed on it's own while vehicle was parked.
The front driver side headrest deployed while driving down the road at 45mph.
The active headrest restaint deployed for no reason while car was being driven. Looks like the plastic holding the pin failed.
Headrest deployed without impact - deployed while vehicle running but in park. Loud pop and seat hit me in the back of the head.
The passengers headrest was deployed without warning. Car was in the garage when this occured. No one was injured and no accident occured. This could have caused bodily damage if passenger was in place. Dodge has informed us there is no replacement because they discontinued this part. Passenger seat no longer safe because no replace is available. Headrest shouldn't deploy on its own.

My husband was driving and the headrest popped open as if he had an accident. He was driving on a highway in the middle of a city, stayed in one lane. There was no accident or sudden stop or anything simulating an impact. The headrest hit my daughter in the head causing a headache.
The active head restraint on the passenger side deployed suddenly without warning. We were traveling on a city street at approximately 30 mph. The passenger was hit on the back of the head and had a severe headache. There was no nor has there been any rear collision. After examining the inside of the restraint I could see broken pieces of plastic that appeared to had been keeping it together.
On July 10, 2020, while driving 45 mph on a straight highway, my driver side headrest deployed into the back of my head causing a severe headache. I was not involved in an accident. It just randomly deployed. I have since researched and found that this is not the first incident and that there has been no recall issued for it. I am now forced to pay for a repair that is caused by a faulty piece of equipment. It is only a matter of time before the passenger headrest does the same. I have three teenagers, and I am very concerned that this could happen to them and cause an accident.
The passenger headrest deployed with accident. Nobody was in the vehicle when it deployed, it was parked. It was immediately noticed when a passenger attempted to reenter the vehicle and could not sit properly.
Passenger headrest deployed on its own hitting passenger in head. Headrest now will not close and appears to have broken plastic pieces inside, causing it to remain at an odd angle. Vehicle was parked at time of deployment.
2013 Dodge Durango. I was leaving work, got in car, put on seat belt and head rest deployed. I can see that the brackets holding the pin in place broke causing it to deploy.
The vehicle was stationary, parked in a garage overnight when the head restraint partially deployed. Upon touching the headrest to investigate the head restraint fully deployed.
Driving the vehicle on highway when the passenger side headrest popped open. Airbags did not deploy.
Vehicle was stationary in my driveway, I was sitting in the driver seat. Vehicle was running, but in "park", driver's door open. My husband reached in from outside to hug me goodbye, and the driver's side headrest popped open. Powerful enough to move my head forward, but not powerful enough to cause pain or injury. We tried to put it back together (not realizing that there was an airbag in there), and were unsuccessful. I drove approximately 4 miles to work afterwards, adjusting the seat a bit so as not to impede my posture.
I was driving approximately 25 mph, & slightly tapped on the brake to slow down, and my headrest deployed & popped out and hit me in the back of the head while I was driving down the road. It startled me, but also popped out hard enough to cause a headache.
Within one week time frame, both front headrests suddenly and loudly snapped apart with a loud bang and propelled forward with great force. My husband was in the drivers seat when it happened on that side but luckily did not have his head resting on it. We were merging onto the interstate when it happened and the horrible noise made us slam on the brakes and almost come to a stop. It was a huge shock and very scary. Sounded like a gunshot going off. The second passenger headrest exploded open today with my sons head resting in it. It jerked his head forward and hit him on the temporal side of his head. Complaints of a headache so far. We were parked when this happened.
My drivers side headrest came apart and hit my husband in the back of the head. All he did was sit in the seat, there was no impact of any sort and the vehicle was not in motion.
While driving, my headrest suddenly deployed and gave my head a jolt and left me with neck pain and discomfort in my shoulder.
I went to my neighbors house put my vehicle in park and left it running, I got out went inside for not even 5 minutes, when I opened the driver door I noticed the headrest safety thing has deployed.
After arriving home and placing the car in park I was struck in the back of the head. The active headrest restraint failed causing it to release. The plastic holding tabs appear to be broken off.
While driving at normal speeds and with no collision, front passenger active head restraint on 2013 Dodge Durango citadel spontaneously deployed. Luckily, passenger seat was not in use at the time. Head restraint cannot be reset, because plastic holding bracket is now broken.
2013 Dodge Durango sxt. Consumer writes in regard to driver side head-rest opening while driving.
The vehicle was traveling in a straight line on southbound interstate 5, and traveling at freeway speeds. The front passenger seat head rest unexpectedly deployed- striking the person seated in that seat in the head. Thankfully, it was not the driver's side headrest as this unexpected impact to the head may have caused a reaction resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. When checking online, there appear to multiple occurrences of this type of unnecessary deployment of this type of safety device on Dodge vehicles of this era.
Headrest deployed without impact to vehicle. Headrest damaged as a result. Not able to reset due to damage caused. In need of replacement. Vehicle was stationary and not running at the time of deployment.
Front passenger active restraint headrest deployed while driving without collision or other known event on city street at posted speed. My teenage son sitting in seat while restrained was struck in back of the head when headrest deployed forward, but he was not injured by this event. The headrest cannot be repaired or reset, and fiat Chrysler America (Dodge) has discontinued this part and no longer keeps it in stock for replacement nor do they offer an alternative part to make the seat/headrest safe and serviceable.
I was driving my 2013 Dodge Durango citadel. While driving approximately 45 mph the passenger side headrest became dislodged and sprung open out of no where. Thankfully, no one was in the seat as they could have been severely injured. After contacting the dealership it appears the plastic retaining pin receiver had broke. Small pieces of plastic were inside the headrest and it is unable to be reset. The dealership does not cover this under any warranty and it would be almost $800 to repair. I believe this headrest is also connected to my airbag deployment system. It is unknown if any further issues could happen from this.
As me and my mother was sitting in burger king drive thru the passenger front seat headrest suddenly disengaged and hit my mother in back of the head.
Vehicle was parked. Male driver exited vehicle and leaned back into driver's seat to retrieve belongings from behind passengers seat. Upon doing so he placed his hand on the headrest of the driver's seat. It was at this time that the active head restraint system activated on the driver seat. Upon examination by mechanic it was determined that plastic hinges had broken in the headrest. Vehicle purchased new 8/2013, 150k miles. Replacement headrest: $650 plus labor.
