Portion of brake light (known as race track lighting) that is located on rear hatch portion of vehicle has been infiltrated by water due to faulty gasket material and rendered portion of light inoperable. Entire assembly must be replaced at a cost of $1100 at dealer. Have mopar maxcare warranty and will not be covered. Also spoke to Dodge customer care and they could not open a case on it due to the age/mieage on the vehicle. This has been a reoccurring issue on 2014+ Dodge Durango's as well as other models that use this racetrack lighting. To reiterate, the light is not damaged on the exterior in any way, was not modified by anyone in any way. . . . . It is an inherent flaw in the design of he lighting and gasket used to keep it water proof that caused this failure.
The racetrak lift gate housing has accumulated water and caused brake lights to malfunction.
The center brake light on the rear hatch leaks water into the light assembly and causes damage to the led lights, which causes some of them to stop working.
Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the rear passenger side brake lights had failed to illuminated. Upon inspection it was discovered that the led light bulbs had blown and water was present inside the light assembly. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 20,000. Jft.
The entire brake light (panels) had water leak in them causing water to back up in plastic cover shorting out the break lights and causing condensation on the rest of the brake panels. This happens when it rains or car is getting washed or any time water touches back brake lights.
The rear hatch taillight/brake light assembly, also known as the "race track" light, collects water somehow inside of the assembly. I have found water inside of the assembly after any volume of rain, be it a drizzle or a downpour, and after any length of carwashing. I'm not talking about a small bit of water either. Due to the water accumulation in the assembly, part of the led assembly has now gone dark. Due to the shape of the light the water accumulates in the bottom corners of the light and just sits there until a bright sunny day comes along to evaporate the water. Which still leaves a large amount of condensation inside of the assembly. So it is just a matter of time before the whole assembly goes dark and quits working, that's the best case scenario. I have read on every mopar, Dodge, and Durango specific community forums and message boards that this is not a one off issue. It seems that 90% of Durango's with this light assembly have the same issue. With some cases reporting visible smoke coming from the assembly due to a catastrophic failure from extended water damage, complete light failure, and many other issues caused by shotty manufacturing. To have the assembly replaced is no cheap venture. The light assembly alone runs around $500 or more, depending on the condition, plus I'm figuring another $300 to $600 in labor cost on top of the part cost. None of this work is covered under any of mopar, Dodge, or Chrysler warranties. Even the bumper to bumper warranty I paid roughly $4,000 for. This situation has numerous saftey concerns from no visibility at night for the driver's behind to a serious fire hazard with electrical equipment constantly in water. I hope this issue is remedied before my vehical or anyone else's vehical has melting taillights or another vehical wedged in the rear from my rear lights burning out. Please research all the forums out there.
I reside in massachusetts, where winters can be long and harsh. Either raining or snowing. I purchased my 14 Durango with 29k in mileage back in June and around December I noticed there to be a puddle of water moving back and forth in my left side light that is attached to the tailgate (not the brake light). Maybe a few days later a few of the led lights burnt out and I now have no lights on the side. I have since tried contacting the dealer and the company that I have an extended warranty through and neither of them will fix nor replace the led strip of the racetrack light. The light itself costs aroun $1,000 and I shouldn't have to worry about something like this. I shouldn't have to keep my vehicle in doors while it rains or be concerned about the safety of my daughter if anything were to catch fire due to electric unit hitting water. I have since joined a Dodge Durango page on facebook bringing the matter up and a lot of people have experienced the same issue. This should be a recall and fixed immediately. If dozens upon dozens of people are experiencing this from2014-2016 Dodge Durango's I think something should be done about it. I bought a farely unused car in which I put $4,000 down and now 7 months later I have to pay $1,000 for an entire light strip that should never get water in it? it blows my mind that I have to worry about something like this. Please help us Durango owners.
This has happened twice, the first time was a month or so ago but it happened again last week and the wound was much worse. The exposed edge of the left and right rear brake light are extremely sharp and exposed anytime the rear hatch is open/up. I thought about making a video showing how it could peal and apple or watermelon skin. My right arm has a short 3/4" scrap (1st) and now an almost 3" long scrap that is taking its time to heal. If your skin touches those edges and has any amount of force it will scrape the skin. This happens during unloading if a package shifts while unloading.
