An oil plug front left of engine block blew out pumping oil onto catalytic converter. Open flames melted wheel well, back bumper, and fuel hoses off of gas tank. Fire went out went all the oil was pumped out of engine and car stopped moving. I contacted Chrysler safety, they referred me to Dodge customer care; they initially created a case #31892226 but then sent a letter saying they were not responsible because the car was out of a three-year warranty period and also unspecified environmental factors. Although my wife and son were almost immolated, it wasn't important enough for them to check into. The car remains parked at a local garage awaiting investigation.

Due to engine sludge in my 2002 Dodge Intrepid the engine has locked up and needs to be replaced. Many other complaints and issues with this engine. Very unfair to the consumer not to correct the defects of this engine.
Engine & oil light repeatedly came on. Idled low and would cut off. I was in the middle of traffic and car just cut off when I attempted to slow. Car behind me almost hit me and man had road rage. Luckily the car restarted and got me into my apt complex where it cut off for the last time. I had completed oil changes as recommended and was told there was no problem. This is a common problem as stated per guy that attempted to look at the car. Now I need a motor on a car that is barely worth the value of the car. There may not have been an accident or death, but this is too common a problem for Dodge to ignore.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 20 mph, the engine hesitated and lost power completely. The contact pushed the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle would not restart. He waited two hours before the vehicle managed to restart and then drove it to a mechanic. The contact was informed that the oil reservoir was full of coolant and antifreeze, which was common for his type of vehicle. He took the vehicle to another shop and was informed of the same thing, including that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that they were not responsible for the defect. The contact feels that a recall should be issued. The current and failure mileages were 84,000. Updated 6/01/09 updated 06/02/09.
My 2002 Dodge Intrepid stopped running while I was headed uphill in traffic I managed to make it to the side of the road my mechanic towed it and ran a diagnostic check on it which cam back cam sensor and crankshaft sensor . . . Replaced both. . Car still wont start. . Was told that I possibly flooded the spark plugs while trying to restart it. . . Replaced spark plugs. . . Car still wont start after further investigation was told that the 2. 7 engine is defective and needs to be replaced which if I can find a decent used engine will be atleast $3500 but I cannot find a used Dodge Intrepid engine because they are all bad! I still owe more than $2000 on the car and cannot afford a new engine. . I am behind on payments because I have no transportation to work. . . Or to the grocery store. . Or the doctor or to my 3 kids school for that matter.
I replaced an engine in a 2002 Dodge Intrepid last year and I am replacing one again this year. This engine is less than 80,000 miles and now the engine has locked up again. I am researching and finding other consumers are having engine problems with Dodge Intrepids. This is very costly!.
I own a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. . . I have to replace the motor. . . It only has 76,000 and Dodge will not do anything about it. . .
My 02 Dodge 2. 7 l timing has failed. Since almost all have the same problem why Chrysler does not have a recall ? that's what I call rip off.
I drove a 2002 2. 7 Dodge Intrepid. One day I was driving down I-5, (the main highway) and my car started to over heat right away to the red and was blowing cold air. I was by myself and pulled over as far as I could. I pulled over as far as I could but my car was still in the lane. I waited a little while until my car cooled down, about 1 hour. I tried to drive it to the gas station to use a phone to call my dad. I finally got a hold of someone to come tow me home. The next day my dad had fixed the thermostat thinking this would help. Um. . . . . No! my car started to blow cold air again. I was driving then all of a sudden my car just stopped on the freeway. I was not even able to pull over at all!!! my car just started to slow down and I couldn't even turn my wheel. I had to call the police department and let them know that I was in the freeway and was scared to cause an accident. They came and blocked the road and pushed me to the side of the freeway. This is the worst experience that has ever happened to me in my life!!!!! my dad looked at the car and checked the oil and all he could see was sludge everywhere. I am still making payments on my car and I still have it in my yard. This is a waste of money and do not feel that this is something I should be paying for. Its just been sitting there and after reading all these complaints I cannot believe that Dodge is still selling these cars and putting peoples lives in danger daily! I looked online for ways to stop people from buying these cars and found this site. I really hope something happens with these cars. Atleast stop selling them!!! if anyone has any advise as to what to do or how to fix my car without spending more than my car costs please help me! thank you.
Driving around doing errands, heading to the next town (15 miles) to finish my errands and my engine started to overheat. I turned around and went to the service station that was only about 1/2 mile away and had them look at the car. I had no previous problems with it overheating. It ended up being a cracked block. I needed to get a different engine because it was to expensive to repair the original one.
At 60k miles I had to have a brand new transmission put in, and just 1 week ago I took it into the dealership and they say I need a new engine! it only has 84k miles on it. I don't even owe as much as it will cost me to fix the car, I am very upset. I have taken good care of my car, and to have so major problems with a new car is very disappointing.
I purchased a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7-liter engine in July of 2005 from holley Dodge in middletown, CT for $9,500. The vehicle at that time had 48,000 miles on it. In July of 2007 (at 78,000 miles) I experienced engine problems and, after bringing it back to holley Dodge for service, was told the engine had low compression and was offered repair options 1) tearing down the motor which would cost at least $2,500 depending upon what is found; 2) a rebuilt motor for $3,500+; or 3) a new motor for $4,500+. The warranty did not cover the cost (36,000 miles/3 years). I had maintain the care carefully, changing the oil every 3,000 mile which is more frequent than recommended in the owners manual. After researching this matter, I discovered a vast amount of similar complaints from all over the united states as well as numerous web sites devoted to this 2. 7-liter daimlerchrysler engine problem. Experts believe the engine problems may be due to engine defects or oil sludge build-up that is common in 2. 7l vehicles. I have read that the center for auto safety has received five times more oil sludge complaints on Chrysler 2. 7l vehicles than other vehicles. Apparently these complaints involve quite a few Dodge and Chrysler vehicles from 1998 to present. I believe Chrysler is violating consumer rights under lemon laws or other consumer-protection laws. Can you advise me? thanks, mike veneski.
As I was driving up a hill my car lost power and started to smoke. As I pulled off the road the engine quit, and a fire started under the hood.
My defective Dodge 2. 7l engine in my 02 Intrepid.
- the contact stated while driving at 35 mph, on clear day and road conditions were good the vehicle lost power and the steering wheel became stiff. The contact said that she was able to pull vehicle over and tried to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that she had it towed to big -o tires in topeka, KS. Big-o tires told her that the engine seized, and that the Intrepid 2. 7 liter engines werewell known for this happening. The contact stated that the mechanic said that the oil was not going to the engine properly which caused a sludge to build up.
The engine oil pressure light on my 2002 Dodge Intrepid comes on when the car is fully warm and idles below 700 rpm. I took it to the dealer today and learned that the 2. 7 liter engine contains sludge. This sludge will cause the engine to fail within 10000 miles. The car has been properly maintained. Many many people have experienced this same problem. He engine will have to be replaced.
Thermostat housing popped off when driving down highway this part is glued on I have seen other cars and reports of this same thing happening to others, this part should have been bolted not glued, since then have had problems with car.
While driving a 2002 Dodge Intrepid, the engine seized up. No warning lights. Oil was checked and proper level was determined just prior to incident. Mileage was just under 75,000.
While driving on president george bush turnpike (west) the oil light flashed on and immediately afterwards the engine locked up. The failure of the motor required that my wife, 1 year old son and I sit in the dallas heat for nearly 45 minutes while waiting for a cab to take my wife and son to the airport ($50 expense) and I waited on the tow truck to take the vehicle back to our house ($125 tow bill). Not to mention I will be expected to incur a $7000. 00 bill in order to fix the defective engine.
I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. In 2003 I had the torque converter replaced. Now in 2006 I've had transmission problems again . I took it to daytona Dodge and they said it was under warranty. Then they told me I needed a new torque converter again. Then they called me about 4 days later and said I needed a engine block too because the ear that lines up the transmission was broke. They also said I needed to call my car ins. Because it was due to a impact. To make a long story short both Chrysler and allstate have denied me twice I don't know what to do. I fell they messed up when I had the work done the first time by not lining it up right. The car has been there since Jan. 26. I've had to rent cars for about 2000. 00 (25. 00 a day) till I couldn't afford it any more I bought a 600. 00 car and the Dodge is still there I hope you can help me.

Vehicle cut off. Mechanic stated that vehicle was two quarts of oil low. Consumer drove the vehicle for approximately six months and then vehicle would not start.
I get oil change as directed and have never had problems. All of a sudden, I'm driving and nearly had a fatal accident as my car engine just started running terrible. The dealer states that my engine has failed and that I must pay $3200. There was a news special report on the same night regarding my vehicle and it appears that this problem is common. The dealer states that they've heard numerous complaints as well as other mechanics but Chrysler refuses to recall. This is very dangerous and I am terribly dissatisfied. Please help!!.
While driving 45 mph vehicle caught on fire.
I have a 2002 Chrysler Intrepids with a sludges build up problem. I 'm covered under a warranty that I purchased with Chrysler at time time of sell. I have been told that my car is not covered for the sludge problem by the insrance company that my car is under. The mechanic at the Dodge dealership showed me about four other engine with the same problem that my car have and they all were rejected to be repaired under the warrant. The mechanic told me this is a on going problem with the Intrepids and the oil should be changed every other month to stop the build up and Chrysler is not telling the the owners of this need to change the oil everyother month to prevent the sludge build up.
