Steering Problems of Dodge Intrepid - part 1

When driving down the road at night, the vehicle loses all function and power. When this occurs I have no power steering, lights, brakes, nothing. It flickers on and off like that multiple times. It took me 1 1/2 hours to drive home, which should have taken only half hour. This is a serious safety issue. I can't drive the vehicle now in fear that I will be in an accident. This appears to be an ongoing issue with Dodge vehicles. I can't drive my van in fear it will end up killing myself, my family, or some innocent person on the roadway. This needs to be addressed. A recall is needed to find this ongoing issue. There isn't a specific date but a constant issue.

We are writing to let you know of a major car fire that occurred in our Dodge Intrepid. The driver was driving on the interstate. The hot/cold needle began moving up and down. Then the brakes gave out. Then, the power steering gave out. The car started smoking producing black chemical smoke into the cabin. Then, fire started shooting out of the vents. With no brakes and fire and smoke into the car, the driver was forced to jump out of the vehicle and roll onto the middle of the interstate with the car still going 30-40 mph. The driver was in extreme danger inside the car and obviously laying on the interstate as well. The car ended up in the ditch while completely engulfed in flames. He was able to get onto the shoulder of the road. The fire department arrived to put out the fire. They determined the fire started inside the area of the heating core. The fire was so hot that it melted the bolts we were told by the fire marshal. There obviously was something faulty with the heater core to give this much damage. The driver was treated at the er for smoke inhalation. The contents in the car were either burned, melted, or have severe smoke damage. The vehicle is a complete loss of course. We lost many items of value inside the vehicle. We would like to be reimbursed for the car, the damaged or destroyed contents and any medical bills.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, there was a burning odor. In addition, the steering wheel made an abnormal noise when turning in both directions and all lights, meters and gauges on the instrument cluster panel failed to function. The contact also stated that the rear lights failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000. Djr.

As I was driving along and approached my exit, the steering wheel locked up and would not allow me to control the car. I was able to stop the car safely hitting some brush on the side of the road. No damage or injuries were incurred, but this was very frightening! now, the steering is still getting stuck on turns and I have no horn! the airbag light is now showing and I don't know whats going on with this car! something needs to be done. No warnings, or recalls have been made, and there a many concerns of others going through the same issue with this car. Please advise on what is going to be done about this problem before someone gets killed!.

My 2000 Intrepid s engine blew up 2 years ago and again 2days ago there was no warning. Master cylinder is failing and the steering pin broke in the car and left me helpless I ended up in a ditch. I called Dodge and they said they couldn't help because it was out of warranty past 7 years and its only been 2.

On 15mar12 at approximately 5:30pm I was driving around a slight curve when the steering wheel suddenly pulled to the left. I immediately corrected while letting off the accelerator. After I regained control, the steering still felt extremely loose.

Vehicle has excessive play in steering which causes car to wander while driving, especially at higher speeds. Requires constant adjusting while driving this car is unsafe and makes me a little leary about driving it at all. This seems to be a big promblem with this vehicle and I wonder why the dept. Of transportation and highway safety hasn't done anything about it!.

Excessive steering play. At times vehicle will go on its own in the direction that I previoulsy turned. It wonders all over the road and it is impossible to steer safely then it takes an extra second for steering to respond. It steers like a boat. No injuries vechile parked in driveway afraid to drive.

I was driving my 1999 Intrepid to a doctors appointment. I was trying to park in the parking deck, all of a sudden I heard a loud click. From that point on the car would not steer right nor left. The car would only go forward or back. My mechanic said the steering broke. All my 34 years of driving I have never had this happen before. Yes the car is old but I have had older cars than this and nothing happened this bad.

After purchasing the 2004 Dodge Intrepid, my grand daughter noticed that there is excessive "play" in the steering wheel. I went to the internet and found that this a very common problem with a Dodge Intrepid from 1997 though 2004.

Power steering feels like there is no power steering ,no power steering leaks belts ok and no noise under hood.

Leaving a parking lot space, car suddenly had trouble turning, and felt as though tire locked up and I was unable to control steering properly resulted in crash into a cement light post in parking lot. Damages approx. $ 2,500 to car. Car being repaired.

This car has been driven off the highway mostly. When taken to the highway the steering developed excessive play; about a quarter turn to each side, left and right. Id didn't cause an accident but it nearly did. Especially because where the car is taken many trucks also commute and the excessive play throws the car onto adjacent lanes or the separating barrier.

The contact owns a 1997 Dodge Intrepid. The contact noticed that the ball joints, tire rods, sway bar bushing and motor mounts wore prematurely and needed constant repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance since there were no recalls. The current mileage was 128,000 and the failure mileage was 98,000.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle would float and move from left to right. The contact would have to jerk the steering wheel in order to control the vehicle. The dealer has not been notified. The purchase date and powertrain were unknown. The current mileage was 81,000 and failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Yes, I would like to enter a complaint on the 1996 Dodge Intrepid steering problems. Many people have had numerous problems with the steering , some even leading to death. I have not yet have any failures of my steering system, but it is going bad day by day. I don't have enough money to fix this problem (dealer quoted over $400), and it is my only form of transportation. I find myself praying every time I step into my casket on wheels that something wrong doesn't happen to me. I would like to know why there hasn't been any government recall for this item. This is not a maintenance issue with most other models so why should Intrepid owners have to pay for the faulty design. Please help me out in this issue. Thanks.

Steering on car makes loud clunking noises and freezes/locks at low to medium speeds( preventing any operator control for 1 to 5 seconds). Usually seems to be when turning left however that is not steadfast either. Even turning wheel to back car out of driveway will make large clunking sound in front end. Seems to be usually within first five to 10 minutes of car running however that is not steadfast. This car has not crashed yet but the potential has presented itself more than once. At this point I refuse to let my small children ride in car.

Steering sticking while turning car. Nability to correct turn once inputed, has lead to the car leaving the road several times.

I believe the steering mechanism in my Intrepid is defective. I can turn the steering wheel almost one half turn without turning the car. Bill smith, service manager, bay area tire and service center, glen burnie, maryland, has looked at the car and believes that the problem is with the steering rack, which he says must be replaced. His phone number is (410) 969-0701. Based on what I have read and discussions with mr. Smith and other automobile mechanics, I believe that such a problem is due to a manufacturing defect in the materials, workmanship, or design. Simply, this problem should not be found in an automobile with only 57,000 miles. It will cost about $700. 00 to repair the steering in my car.

While operating my 1999 Dodge Intrepid w. Bound on a city street in philadelphia I was making a left turn when my steering wheel stuck forcing me into the north bound lane. I could not move the steering wheel until I came to a complete stop. Fortunatley there was no traffic in that north bound lanes or I am certain I would have been involved in an accident. I contacted the dealer I purchsed the vehicle from, since the car has only 37,000 miles on it. I was informed that my warranty was up and there is nothing they could do. I would have to have the car towed to the dealer. Since I am retired and could not yet afford to get the vehicle fixed it is still in my driveway. My wife who was in the auto at the time, refuses to get back into the car.

While driving at any speed, the consumer heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. While turning right the driver had difficulty maintaining control of the steering wheel. The steering wheel jerked. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The steering and the tires were no longer providing support for the vehicle. The consumer was told that the steering rod was bent.

Steering gear replaced at 44,000 miles.

The steering gear pinion was replaced. The steering had caught right and or left upon returning to the center. Scc.

The vehicle's steering wheel had so much play. The vehicle crossed the center lime of the highway which forced the oncoming cars to the shoulder.

While driving at any speed and with no warning steering bolt will lose and it is causing the steering wheel to jump around, making it hard for consumer to steer the vehicle.

Steering makes clunking sounds and tends to be very "swishy" while driving. I have taken to dealership twice and complained, both times they stated the steering was within specs even though my personal mechanic had found problems.

The steering locked up, which caused consumer to loose control of the vehicle.

While driving at any speed power assist belt pulley is loose and will make a loud noise. Also, sometimes cause steering problems. Dealer notified.

Traveling at 70 mph on interstate 65, the vehicle was drifting right and then veered right. Vehicle would not respond. Vehicle hit right guardrail and was deflected to the left across 3 lanes and impacted the center concrete divider.

Loss of steering control. Vehicle veered right and would not respond.

Vehicle suddenly accelerated after shifting into drive with foot on brakes. Vehicle hit a tree. Also, steering locked up. Manufacturer sending inspector to check vehicle.

Steering wheel has too much play in it. Vehicle is very difficult to control when driving above 25 mph. Consumer has not contacted dealer. Please provide any further details.

1999 Dodge inrepid steering is extremely loose, flimsy feeling and over sensitive. Steering seems to have far too much play. Vehicle usually jerks or sways when changing lanes because of this. Steering will also usually jerk when driving over bumps, accelerating or braking. Vehicle usually steers and pulls to the lowest side of uneven roads. Steering assembly feels like it violently jerks all over the place when driving over railroad tracks or heavily bumpy areas. Vehicle is sometimes difficult to control due to really loose, flimsy feeling steering that moves way too freely. Front wheels sometimes seem to slide, slip or loose traction around some slight turns at 30+ mph. The vehicle has traction control, not sure if problem is related. Vehicle has 17" standard aluminum starblade wheels and standard goodyear tires. Steering lock for when vehicle is parked is defective, never works or is not present. I had never had these problems with my old 1995 Dodge Intrepid and I do not beleive that they are normal. I took the 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES into the five star dealership where I purchased it, had technician drive it, I was told that it handled fine and that some vehicles have sensitive steering and that it was normal and nothing was wrong. It has been dangerous at times, I have to usually keep both hands tightly on the wheel being prepared to slow down when it starts loosing control or I feel the front wheels slipping or sliding.

When driving vehicle and making a left turn steering wheel will turn, but wheel won't follow through. Connection is not able to impact. Consumer was traveling about 35mph on highway, went to turn vehicle left, and vehicle went straight. He ended up in a ditch.
