Rack and pinion issues. Issues with front wheels and steering. I've had it fixed three times, very expensive. I was pulling out of a parking space, when the steer stopped controlling the wheels. I'm grateful I wasn't on the free way.

Stopped at stop light and turned to the left steering popped and then there was play in steering wheel. Play got worse over time went to payton Dodge in clinton they replaced tierod on left and had car balanced got car back it was worse informed them, they were supposed to pick the car up never did and after 2 weeks took car to another garage where I almost got run over by a big truck because the car would not hardly turn to the left on sharp turns and was making popping noise the rack and pinion had to be replaced. I think because of the history of Dodge and the rack and pinion payton Dodge did not want to work on it.
Rack and pinion / steering issues in 1997 Dodge Intrepid. After just driving 65-70 on the I-15 in southern California, I felt an odd vibration and pull in the steering of the 1997 Dodge Intrepid I was driving. Exited the highway and attempted to turn into a business parking lot to examine the issue when the front end sent a pop sound and the vehicle came to a screeching halt. Driver side front wheel was stuck in a right turn position during any position set on the steering wheel, while the passener side remained intact and normal.

2000 Dodge Intrepid the power steering started acting up, problem's like wining and hard to steer at times. Than finally it went out all together we took the car to the local shop after two power pumps and a new steering rack-n-pinion the mechanic still couldn't figure what the problem was. When he called and said that there was nothing else he could do about the steering problem and he didn't know what was causing it to steer so hard,so he told us to come and get the !@#$%thing out of his sight ! so that's when I went on line and read about all the problem's everyone else was having and also confirmed my suspicions on what might be the problem. (the wrong fluid in res. )so now that I drained the fluid and flushed all the lines a couple times the thing works fine .

The contact owns a 1997 Dodge Intrepid. While attempting to operate the vehicle, the contact noticed that the steering column was inoperative. A technician stated that the rack and pinion fractured and needed to be replaced. In addition, the bolt in the kit offered by the dealer has a smaller head and an improper locking pad that would inevitably lead to a failure. The contact is in the process of having the vehicle repaired and is waiting for a response from the dealer. The failure and current mileages were 222,000.
It started out my steering would get really tight and you couldn't move it at all and it happens everyday now we took it to the dealership and they said it was the rack-n-pinion and so they fixed it and its still doing it.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. When turning the vehicle, the steering would not return to its normal position. The contact had to pull the steering wheel back manually. The vehicle then began making a clunking noise in the front end. The diagnosis was that the rack and pinion steering had internal play and the steering gear needed to be replaced. The contact referenced technical service bulletin number 1900101 (steering). The current and failure mileages were 67,445. Updated 10/03/08 updated 10/06/08.
I was driving around 40mph, came to a complete stop in order to make a right turn on to another street. Once making this right turn the vehicle's steering would not respond to the wheel being turned back to the left. This caused the vehicle to strike the curb. Once stopped the steering seemed to be corrected but this has happened at least two more times. The inner and outer tire rods have been replaced along with the struts and have had multiple alignments none of which have fixed the problem. Now the problem has been diagnosed as the rack and pinion.

Problems with the rack and pinion steering hesitant on turns when turning the steering wheel. Took it to hayward Dodge repair they told me that I needed a $4500. 00 of repair this is along with some other things they say is wrong with the vech. They didn't acknowledge the main problem of the steering . Also after I picked up the vech. I was driving on the free way & my hood flew open & came through my windshield. I was charged $135. 00 for this 21 point inspection. With my hood &winshield damaged I went back the next day, the service mgr. Told me to take him to court they wont take responsibility for the damage.
Rack and pinion steering broke on our 1997 Dodge Intrepid with no warning while it was being backed up, it was total steering failure. We have owned this car since new and it has never been an accident. Thank goodness we had already made it to our destination and this happened before we headed home. The vehicle was towed home and is still parked in the garage until I can get some info on why this happened, and how can it be prevented. I have been told this is not a defect, but the more I look into it the more I see it as the norm. This is a very dangerous situation not only for the drivers of these vehicles but also for anyone in their path.
Rack and pinion problems, the bushings that hold the rack and pinion keep going bad I've had the bushings replaced (November 2007) but then it failed again (September 2008). When ever I go around a turn there's a delay in my sheer almost resulting in a crash.
My 2004 Intrepid will not steer without putting all my strength into turning it. The steering pump is working and I still can not turn the wheel without a lot of resistance. I have seen that a lot of others consumers have had this same problem ue to a faulty rack and pinion.

The contact owns a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid. The contact stated that the two bolts that hold the rack and pinion steering have failed. She stated that the bolts displayed signs of corrosion. When the failure occurred, it knocked down the front passenger side tie rods and caused her to lose complete power and control of the steering. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that it could be due to a manufacturer defect. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle and/or part is not under warranty and they cannot be of assistance. The speed was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 79,902.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle would veer to the right. The repair shop performed an alignment and the power steering pump was replaced. However, the failure still occurred. The vehicle was taken to another repair shop and they stated that the steering gear rack and pinion needed to be replaced. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer and the contact was issued reference number 16542975. The current mileage was 114,000 and failure mileage was 100,000.
Clanking noise in front end when turning the steering wheel in reverse or forward gears on a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. Dealer says rack and pinion is leaking causing the clanking noise and needs replaced. Car is not really safe to drive down the road. Dealer nor Chrysler will help with the repair I am told it is my expense at $1,300. 00. Research on the web shows this is a defect with the manufacturers part and now I am expected to pay to fix it so I as a single mother can drive with my four children in this car that I make payments on!.
The rack and pinion steering on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid r/t started making this creaking and cracking sound it does it 100% of the time I'm driving the dealer said they couldn't find the problem we took it in a second time and they said the steering rack had failed and that they would replace it under warranty so they fixed it drove the car no more than 100 miles and the same creaking and cracking sound was back I fear for our lives because I have heard lots of reports of this problem on these cars and yet Dodge has yet to have a recall for the problem I found this information at. . While driving on highway at 75 mph felt loose play in steering and began moving over to the slow lane and as I did the steering completely failed. After I stopped and in the presence of a highway patrol I turned the wheel and you could see that the wheels did not turn at all. Complete failure. Luckily since I was moving right prior to the failure my car was pointed toward the shoulder and I was able to stop the car safely on the shoulder. Car was towed to Dodge dealer where I was told the rack and pinion had sheared off. Cost of repair was $1600.
The contact states the vehicle went to the other side of the road and he lost control. The vehicle was driven to the dealership at about 3 mph with the hazard lights on. They found the rack and pinion came apart. The vehicle has been at the dealership since this happened. They were unable to obtain the parts needed to repair the vehicle.
I picked up my car from the dealership after the rack and pinion was replaced and noticed a problem on the way home it was very difficult to turn left and extremely easy to turn right I returned the car to the dealership and they checked it again the rack and pinion is bad and needs to be replaced.
While driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid I lost all steering the dealership told me it was the rack and pinion this is the second time this part has failed the first time was in July of 2002.
My 1999 Dodge Intrepid has had steering problems with cluncking, sticking and play in the steering. On 7/22/2005 the steering stuck so bad that I could not turn the wheel and ended up in the lane of on coming traffic. We have to replace the rack and pinion steering which I have research is a major faliure in the Dodge Intrepid and a major saftey issue.
Dear sir or madam, I own a 1997 Dodge Intrepid ES. About a year ago, my rack and pinion needed to be replaced. He installed the new rack and pinion, but I still heard intermittent "clunking" noises coming from the front end. I brought it back to him, he checked it, tightened it and said it should be fine. This past Friday (07/01/05), I went to back out of a friend's driveway and heard one big clunk. . . Then realized that my steering wheel had completely disconnected from both front wheels! I had the car towed and the (new) mechanic realized that the (original) bolts holding the inner tie rods had both snapped at once. He contacted the mechanic that had replaced the rack and pinion (a year ago) and found out that he had reused the original, factory installed bolts, thinking they were fine. He had no reason to think that they should not be reused. My new mechanic found out that Dodge (daimlerchrysler) has a bolt kit to remedy this "problem" of the original bolts breaking. My new mechanic did not know until he called Chrysler for the replacement bolts. I am hoping that you can tell any mechanic that orders a replacement rack and pinion for 1997 or earlier lh platform cars, that they use this bolt kit, provided by Dodge (for approx $55. 00) - if my mechanic had some way of knowing to use the heavier bolts in the first place, less rack and pinion assemblies would be damaged. I wish there were some way of letting all owners of these cars know about the heavier bolt kit - and suggest or require that these bolts be changed out - before the rack and pinion fails in the first place. The information is as follows: napa part 22-335 rack and pinion mopar kit 5072586aa bolt kit Chrysler technical service bulletin: 19004-2 "bolt kit for steering rack".
Problem began about one month ago, the steering was loose. When moving the steering wheel about 5-10 degrees in either direction, the steering system does not respond. Then, the vehilce was taken to a mechanic, who determined that rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced. The owner was attempting to get help from Chrysler, but they were not offering help. Owner noticed upon investigation that there were others with this concern.
Steering clunks and sticks at random with no warning, told rack and pinion is in need of replacement. Vehicle has only a little over 48,000 miles on it.
Have just began having problems apparently with the cernter take off system, have had it at the Dodge dealership in kingsport (1-423-247-3155), they put steering bushings on it, costly repair, still did not touch the problem. I have a horrible problem steering the car, apparently there was a report issued to them about the system in 01-31-1999, but they did not notify the car owners. Have thought I had problems with a starter pulley, noticed some engine shake, slightly, a little smoke around the back bumper, the car has 74 thousand miles on it, I have my records and the previous owners records of repairs and oil changes that have been kept up. Online I have read of thousands of people who have wrecked and died because of the faulty center take off system of these cars, (bushings, the rack and pinion geer interface, inner tierod, on the steering gear) failure is unavoidable without a costly repair of the defective steering system at the owners expense. I have also read of engines siezing up at around 40 thousand miles even with proper matinence. I have no choice but to drive this car, I am disabled and cannot afford to buy another or have the factory defects fixed at my own expense. The dealership should have known about the noice of the lh family of cars, but instead have sent me down the road of costly repairs knowing full well that the repairs made will not fix this car. These cars are a hazzard and I cannot believe that the gov does not get involved and protect the consumer and others on the road from the prospect of horrible injuires and possible death due to this big corperation's faulty equipment. Where do I go from here?.
As of 02/18/2005 I started to feel a slight binding in the steering when trying to return wheel to center from a turn. It got progressively worse to the point where I occasionally had to "wrestle" the steering wheel back to the center position. It also feels loose, suspension rattles and I've got 4 inches of play at center. I took it to the dealer and was informed it would cost $1300 to fix. I've never experienced this type of failure in all of the years I've owned cars and think this is just a poor design that Chrysler is keeping mute about. I bought this vehicle new and have babyed it ever since. It has less that 60,000 miles on it; I've own other manufacturers that have lasted for a lot longer. This should not be happening to a car that has been as well taken care of as this. Iif Chrysler fails to act on this problem it will be the last time they get my business.
While driving 20 mph steering wheel vibrated uncontrollably. Driver noticed smoke coming from the steering column. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.
While going 20 mph steering became impossible to control. Consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, who determined that rack and pinion steering was defective.
I was making a right hand turn. The steering wheel locked up on me and I went over the sidewalk and off the road into some ones front yard. Luckly this was late at night and no one was on the sidewalk. I had the car towed to a mechanic. He said it has a bad rack and pinion. I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I had since new with only 49,000 miles on it. The mechanic said their is no way this should have went out. It cost me over $1200 to fix this . Please check this out before some one gets seriously injured. Thanks.
I bought my 2000 Dodge Intrepid from ideal auto exchange. In a few days I heard some knocking on turns. I took the vehicle to my mechanic who states that rack and pinion has a problem , and must be replaced. I have a warranty with dealer under "lemon" law to replace rack and pinion. However, dealer states that after careful check on the vehicle they can't see any problems, and external knocking sound on turns is normal. Afterwards they refused to replace the part. Please advise what should I do.
Rack and pinion steering system failed causing wheel position to lock up on a left hand turn. Had to physically correct the wheel, almost caused a collision.
Front end of car shook mildly at high speeds. Taken to mechanic, who said struts would need replacing within next 3 months. About a week later, whille pulling onto a busy road, rack and pinion steering system fell apart, one wheel went one way, the other wheel went another way, car thudded to a holt violently. Towed to repair shop, has been in shop 2 months already, have had rack and pinion, water pump, struts, tires, power steering pump, and power steering pump sensor relpaced. Vehicle still will not turn, and is no longer drivable or repairable. Vehicle was purchased from dealer certfied used car 4 month earlier, approx 90000 miles. Total repair costs so far are $1,500 - $3,000 and climbing every day. Old part is available.
