Air Bag Problems of Dodge Journey - part 2

Headrest saftey mechanism deployed due to the tension pin breaking internally while sitting in a driveway. Nothing caused deployment other than random device faliure.

The driver's headrest in my 2016 Dodge Journey has deployed and will not reset. The plastic pieces that hold the metal bar have broken. I have read about many other owners of Journeys, that are experiencing the same issue, yet there is no official recall. I have not taken it to be inspected.

Airbag warning light goes on and off at times, sometime remains on for a minute or two and other times goes off immediately. This happens when the turn signal is turned on or when I run over a bump in the road. I had the codes run on it and it shows up as the steering wheel clockspring. This started doing this during summer of 2022 and stopped until recently.

My airbag light continuously stays lit. Concerned about malfunction.

While I was driving drivers side headrest deployed striking me forcefully in the back of the head.

The other day I noticed my air bag warning light was on on my dashboard. I had my car hooked up to run the codes for the dash lights. It came back as the airbags in the drivers and passenger headrests had popped or started to pop. I had the headrests looked at and the black plastic cover on the back of it is partially coming off. There is a gap between the front of the headrest and the back of the headrest, big enough my finger can fit through. I was not in a car accident or anything like that, my car was parked for a few days and when I went to drive it, this is how I found it.

Air bags did not deploy when I hit someone at 35+mph. My passenger and my safety was put at risk because the air bags did not deploy causing us to be thrown forward forcefully causing pain in our back and neck. Car is being towed to a shop and I let them know my concerns for the air bag being faulty.

I was just pulling out of my driveway and it broke open air bag hasn't deployed but driver side head rest air bag compartment sounded like a small explosion but it broke open. There was no accident, I didn't hit anything just did it on it's own.

On 7/17/2-23 I was rear ended at 55mph and my airbags didn't deploy. On 7/18/2023 I reported it to Dodge I was given a case # told someone would call me in 48 hrs and they told me it was fine to drive, no one ever called. 7/24/2023 my 14th wedding anniversary got ruined because my airbags deployed while driving. On 7/25/2023 I reported it to Dodge was told someone would call me in 48 hrs no one did and still hasn't. I have call a numerous times each time nothing, not once have they even asked if I was all right in both incidences.

The contact owned a 2019 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while the vehicle was completely stopped, another vehicle driving at 55 mph rear-ended his vehicle. There were no air bags deployed upon impact. The contact stated that the trailer hitch absorbed the majority of the impact from the crash. The contact suffered whiplash, but medical attention was not received. The fire department and police arrived on the scene. Police and fire department reports were filed. The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site. The contact stated that the following week, while driving, all of the air bags deployed without any impact. The contact suffered a concussion, and his dog, who was sitting in the rear center seat, died as a result of his injuries. The fire department and police arrived on the scene. The police and fire department filed reports for the second time. Medical attention was not received. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and their insurance adjuster informed the contact that the air bags performed as designed to not deploy in a rear-end collision. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000. The VIN was unavailable.  .

While driving, the front passenger headrest just deployed and sprung forward, hitting my son in the back of the head.

Was hit by another vehicle in front driver wheel which knocked me off the roadway. During the collision I kept hitting the brakes and the car wouldn't stop. I had no control over the steering as well. My car then hit a fence. My airbags never deployed with extensive damage to the front end of my car. Because of the airbags not deploying I hit my head on the steering wheel causing injury as well as my knees hit the dashboard.

In June 2023, the air bag light came on intermittently. In July 2023, the air bag light came on and stayed on (no longer intermittent.

The vehicle keep locking and unlocking by itself even when I am driving. Also when I was driving the airbags deployed on its own but no accident.

An unknown dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v432000 (air bags). The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

The crankshaft position sensor as well as a oil leak from the motor and has intermittent start delays these failures I found on this sight that affects my vehicle make & model year my engine 3. 6 when I accelerate the overdrive doesn't engage and I took it to nyle maxwell in san antonio where it's at now I also have the diagnosis that matches what is posted here on this site & 3 open recalls that suggest other years may be affected.

Passenger side front seat headrest airbag deployed while driving. The airbag feature deployed while my 13 year old daughter was sitting in the seat. When the safety feature deployed, it hit my child in the back of her head causing pain and injury. This safety feature deployed without warning or cause. The headrest broke when it deployed is now just hanging from the seat.

Airbag light is on. P06dd engine oil pressure control circuit performance /stuck off.

Airbags didn't deploy in head on collision and break system has a defect in the abs module.

Headrest (seat driver side) deployed for no reason while car was parked in garage and turned off.

Rear back up camera in the rear view mirror is not functioning correctly. It will go black but illuminate a camera with a line through it. Makes in impossible to use to back up because the light on the mirror makes it extremely difficult to see in the mirror and the camera isn’t working to help either. One day it worked and the following day it didn’t. Also, the passenger airbag light will go in and off even with someone occupying the seat which leads me to believe the airbag will not deploy if if in an accident. The computer has been run and it showed no issues. I know there was a recall to the back up cameras but it says my vehicle wasn’t affected. How do I get this fixed. Both are major safety concerns. This car has 60k miles on it and has been through 3 sets of tires. The tires wear extremely fast on this vehicle and they are 50-60k tires.

The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also informed the air bag on the front passenger headrest deployed independently. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

The front passenger head rest deployed while parked due to the plastic piece inside the head rest broke that holds the pin that locks the head rest in place.

A few years ago the passenger seatbelt beeper stopped working. Unsure if air bags will deploy in a crash or not since the seat isn't detecting a person. Mentioned to dealership and told it would be a costly repair to check all the wiring.

I have been getting airbag alert on dashboard since car was purchased in 2017…would go away and come back on here and there. The headrest in passenger side deployed while driving!!! ridiculous!.

Driver headrest exploded while driving on expressway.

The airbag light came on intermittently but now has stayed permanently. The suspension of the car become almost uncontrollably bouncy with the slightest dip or hump on the road. The bouncing continues for a couple miles and at times does make steering difficult. The tires are 4 months old and the car has been serviced at regular intervals.

Light has been illuminating every few days, it will ding when it comes on then stay lit for several days. Not sure if the wiring under my passenger seat is loose or whats going on.

I have power door locks not working except manually or driver door by key. Key fob and door module for locks will not function. I cannot open the hatch due to power lock function. The airbag light comes on when vehicle is started and the door is open and only disappears after the door is closed, engine shut off then restarted. Also the engine light came on for awhile then off and is now back on. This is what code scan report says. Engine and transmission are p0420 catalyst efficiency (bank1), obdll codes ($03) is catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1. The airbag is u0172 lost commuication w/left side satellite accelerator sensor 1- stored. The door module- front right (dmfr) is b16a5 passenger window switch backlighting circuit high-stored. Not sure exactly what these all mean but I think the power locks are a safety issue along with the airbags. The power locks don't lock after driving it like they used to after driving so many feet.

Head on collison with light pole high speed the no airbags deployed. Vehicle was towed to tow yard is awaiting insurance to estimate damages.

Rear ended and side swiped by truck going over 75 mph. Collision disabled engine and vehicle. Air bags did not deploy.

The contact owned a 2015 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at 25 mph, the vehicle wheels inadvertently locked. The contact daughter depressed the brake and the vehicle slid in the neighbor's yard and crashed into a tree. There were no warning lights illuminated. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact's daughter sustained whiplash, upper chest pain, upper back pain and neck pain. The contact transported her daughter to the hospital, where it was diagnosed that she had sustained soft tissue injuries and muscle strain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. The contact did not have the VIN.
