The drivers side active headrest deployed while the vehicle was unoccupied. It is not electronically controlled, so no warning lamps were illuminated. This appears to be a known issue with fca but they offer no assistance with correcting the known safety defect.

I was driving home in the dark and I heard a loud bang pop! it scared me at first I didn't see anything wrong but when I got home to looked I notice the passenger head rest popped out! I am happy that no one was sitting next to me. That could have been so scary. I have uploaded a picture of it not extended out. I was driving 70 mph going home on the interstate. No accident nothing. Just came out of no where. This was scary.

On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at approximately 1:30 pm, the driver’s side headrest, part of my 2013 Dodge Journey’s ahr (active head restraint) system suddenly exploded for no apparent reason. I was alone in the vehicle, waiting to make a left turn. The sudden loud, sharp sound and impact to the back of my head startled and stunned me; I felt as if I had been rear ended. I looked back but there was no one behind me. Not knowing what had happened, I felt scared and light headed. I was still able to complete my turn but I pulled over to compose myself and ensure that I was okay. I didn’t become aware of the failure of the headrest until I returned home and my husband inspected the vehicle. As I write this incident report 24 hours after it occurred, I am experiencing soreness and discomfort in my neck and plan to seek a medical assessment. The vehicle is available for inspection until repairs are made. The manufacturer acknowledges that the sudden failure of this component is a defect for this vehicle but as yet it has not been the subject of a recall. No inspection of the head rest component by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

Head rest deployed out of no where and we can’t reset it.

My daughter sat inside the passenger seat while the car was parked, and the passenger headrest deployed onto the back of her head.

While returning from a shopping trip with my mom the passenger headrest broke/exploded? it caused several small plastic fragments to fly from I guess inside and the headrest hit my mom in the back of the head. There were no lights to indicate a problem, no other vehicles around and we were only traveling 25 mph. No police or anyone else involved ed. Wasn't sure what to do. I saw a recall for this on similar vehicles but mine is not included.

I was sitting, idling in my car when my active headrest restrain system in my passenger seat suddenly went off. I am lucky no one was in my passenger seat and that I wasn't driving at that time. I looked more into it and it looks like the plastic encasing the metal bar which holds the headrest together snapped. Googling online I saw that this is a common issue with Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler cars. I am now worried my driver side active headrest restraint system could go off while I am driving and cause an accident, as the passenger one definitely flew forward fast when it snapped.

After coming home and parking the car in the driveway, went out with my son and noticed the passenger headrest had been pulled out. Went and looked at it and noticed some of the brackets holding a metal bar in place had been broke off.

Headrest popped open and can't be closed. Unable to remove headrest to try and fix it.

The passengers side head rest came apart. It came apart so fast it was like it exploded. It was almost like it had an air bag on the inside of it. I just started the unit in our drive way, went to back out, and it came apart. I tried to reset the head rest but the plastic locking tabs on the inside no longer work. This needs to be a recall!.

The active headrest deployed in the driver's seat while the vehicle was in use. The vehicle was not involved in any accident at the time of the deployment, and it was unprovoked.

My passenger side headrest popped open while my car was in park today. Randomly deployed. This is beyond unacceptable that something could just happen like a safety feature deploying when not impact provoked.

I was entering a highway on the entrance ramp when I was hit in the back of the head by the headrest, with no warning it just burst apart and caused dizziness. I pulled over as I literally felt like I was in a car accident. I continued to feel dizzy and experienced neck and lower back pain. I spoke with my doctor this morning, and contacted the local Dodge, Chrysler dealer and have an appointment on 5/22.

I got in my car yesterday and the headrest of my driver's seat popped open. I am aware that they're was a class action suit against the manufacturer for malfunctioning headrest but I cannot find any recalls on this website for that issue. I would like to know if this is going to be covered, buy the dealership if I bring this in for repair.

Owner was driving about 40 mph when the headrest popped open. There were no collisions or issues when this happened.

The driver side seat headrest cushion deployed automatically. There was no car collision. I noticed the seat headrest deployed after returning to the car hours later. I liked into the interior back side of the cushion part and I saw broken pieces inside.

Both front headrests have deployed. Car was sitting in driveway at night, came out in the morning and headrests were open/deployed. Plastic pieces inside snapped and will not lock back together. I have found hundreds of similar issues that people had with the same model of vehicle.

I came out of a meeting and found it this way. There is no evidence of an accident or hit while I was away. Also there is no evidence of anything making impact with the headrest inside the vehicle.

We were going thru the park we did not hit anything nor where we going fast we were only going 14/15 mph . I was sitting in the pasenger seat and all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a loud pop and my head was hit by the head rest for no reason . We were not in an accident or anthing to cause it to just all of a sudden deploy.

While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

We were driving on the interstate and my front seat passenger headrest blew apart. I could have suffered neck injury due to the force of the impact, or accident due to startling the driver. We called our local dealership and they were familiar with this issue however stated it is not on a recall and we could have the headrest replaced for $500 plus labor. There were no warning signs from the vehicle. I did have a sore neck and headaches for a couple of days. I just had a mechanical give me this page and said I should report the issue.

My active headrests on the front seats have suddenly sprung, I. E. They have opened up. The car was parked in my yard, no other vehicles around, no accident/fender bender. I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?.

I got into my car today , August 12, 2024, and my son noticed something wrong with the front passenger seat headrest. It had somehow deployed. I was not in an accident. The little black pieces that are apparently supposed to hold a pin were completely broken. I don't know if it is because it has been so hot where I live or what, but if someone had been in that seat, they could have gotten injured. I never heard a sound of it happening, so it must have been when I was parked. There were no warning signs and the seat hadn't even been moved.

Driver’s headrest deployed, popped open while vehicle was turned on but in park. My safety was at risk , had I been driving not exactly sure how I would have reacted. Especially since when it deployed ( exploded open) it did so to the back of head causing blunt pain from back of head down neck. Initially thought I had been rear ended due to loud noise and force of head being pushed forward. There was no forewarning at all. Due to pain, was not able to verify with dealer of insurance agent as of yet.

As I was driving to pick my son up from work at 10pm, I started to drive my 2013 Dodge Journey sxt and noticed my head position didn't feel right. I got to my sons job and as we were making our way to the gas station to get gas before we headed home my headrest hit me in the back of the head randomly. The active headrest sprung forward hitting me in the back of the head. Luckily I was not driving at that moment or it could have caused me to crash, being that it was night time and raining. I got home where I could get my flash light out and give it a good looking over and realized that it the clips on the inside of the active headrest broke. I tried to reset the headrest to dee if there was some other mechanism that would let it re-clip back in place and it just keeps springing forward. I have not taken it to get it looked at yet as I am writing you on the same night of the incident. I tool a picture of the headrest in it sprung forward state. I have also read alot of reviews on cargurus website about other Dodge Journey owners having the same issues. Over 20 complaints regarding this same issue. There were jo warning signs other than me noticing my head position felt strange before the headrest completely sprung forward.

The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front driver's seat independently moved up and down. In addition, the steering wheel independently moved up and down. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

As I was driving on the highway my headrest made a loud bang and smaked the back of my head/ neck with a lot of force. I almost lost control of the vehicle, and it really hurt. My headrest still is apart. Going to see if a dealership can do anything tomorrow. This was so scary it is a huge saftey issue.

We were pulling out of a parking lot on to the road and the riverside head headrest “exploded” open. We have looked and seen that some weee recalled but ours was not apart of the recall.

There was no damage to my headrest when I parked my car on the evening June 29, 2024. On Sunday morning; June 30, 2024. When I entered my vehicle. I learned that the driver seat headrest; airbag deployed/busted open for no apparent reason. My children travel with me in this vehicle. This is very, very dangerous!.
