The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph with her son seated in the front passenger’s seat, there was a loud popping sound coming from the passenger’s side seat before the front passenger’s seat headrest exploded. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be inspected; however, the vehicle was not repaired due to a fractured clip. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

While driving, without any warning,the front passenger seat headrest exploded, hit my wife in the back of the head and snapped her neck forward, almost knocked her out. I can't imagine what could happen if this exploded on the drivers side and caused an accident (I'll bet this has happened but was overlooked). I contacted the local Dodge dealer and they claimed they have never heard of this issue before. . . I advised them to do some online research. . . It has happened thousands of times! the dealership said it cost about $1000 to replace (times two for the drivers side as well). Now we are afraid to drive this vehicle as we have no way of knowing when the drivers seat headrest will explode! as for this being a safety feature to protect against a rear end collision, it is not, and there is no indication of someone hitting the rear end of this vehicle. I spoke to a mechanic I know and he has never heard of such a thing.

There were no reported injuries. The contact called the local dealer who informed her that the repair was not covered under warranty. The dealer referred her to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

Driver seat headrest deployed. Thank god I was not in car when it happened. I noticed my head was uncomfortable driving when I looked I see it wide open!! I was not in a car accident or anything at all. I just got this vehicle July 2020! this is obviously a defect and a dangerous safety hazard!! thank god my kids and I were not in vehicle. On 5/6/21, while the vehicle was running and stationary, waiting to turn left through an intersection on city streets, the ahr (active head restraint) randomly deployed in the driver headrest. My husband, who was driving at the time, thought we had been rear ended due to the loud noise it made and the force with which it hit the back of his head. The vehicle has never been in a collision and is up to date on maintenance. Researching the ahr online brought up dozens of articles about this problems occurring in Dodge Journeys (yr 2010- 2018) but it has yet to officially be listed for recall even though a class action lawsuit was filed for the issue. We called our local Dodge dealership and they informed us the headrest could not be repaired once deployed and that a new one was needed, quoting us roughly $575. 00 to do so.

Started vehicle as normal. Pulled out of driveway on to residential street and head what sounded like something hard hitting the side of the vehicle. When I had the chance to stop and investigate it was noticed that the front passenger side headrest had deployed.

For no reason while the vehicle was parked, the driver side headrest popped out and now the air bag sensor light is on.

Both air bags on my headrest deployed while car was parked and not in a accidents.

2010 Journey sxt found with active headrest deployed on the front driver's seat parked in the driveway. No accidents - no bumping. The steel pin was still in the catch and plastic casing that is supposed to hold the steel pin broke away.
