15 problems related to engine head gasket leaking have been reported for the 1998 Dodge Neon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Brought car in for repair of severe oil leak at engine rear. Dodge dealer advises that it was a leaking head gasket (blown head gasket) on 1998 Neon with approximately 46,463 miles on the odometer. Could not reach Chrysler customer service at 1-800-922-1997 (stays busy); dealer refused to warrant work even though cause of problem was apparently a design/latent defect in the aluminum head. Vehicle purchased new 5/21/98. Internet reveals numerous other people have had similar problems. Fortunately, the car didn't break down and cause injuries, fataliites or property damage. A manufacturer and dealers should stand by their products. It cost me $636. 94 to "repair" something that the dealer would not warrant because of apparent design/latent defect (damage allegedly required purchase and installation of new cylinder head to properly repair (at my expense) and I told them "no way"; its their problem, not mine).
1998, Neon sport head gasket oil leak on driver's side (needs to be recalled. This is a problem that Dodge is very aware of but refuse sto fix at their expense.
Oil leaking in driveway, took for inspection immediately (same day it was noticed on a new driveway). Inspector notes head gasket leak this motor should be on a recall list with as many as they have seen on this model. Scc ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****770859****.

Engine's headgasket was leaking oil. The cost of the replacement of the headgasket was $544. 88. I got it replaced by norwood Dodge. I firmly believe that the headgasket was defective, and that the government should order Chrysler to issue a recall. Thank you for your assistance.

Our problem is with the Neons headgasket leaking. As many Neon are owned why doesn't Dodge do something about these cars leaking. I run a garage and we have done about 25 head gasket jobs on these cars. This is crazy! these cars have low mileage for a car but are out of warranty. I know that Dodge redesigned these gaskets. But why don't they recall them. It is crazy to have a car with less than 40,000 miles on it & have to replace the head gasket. These same cars are the same as the talons, eclispes, and other with the same engine problems just different names. Problem with the lifters also. Dodge has remade lifters because so many problems with the old design. Take a car with less than 50,000 on it & it needs a valves replaced. Old valves will not close properly. Just went through this with a talon. Got valves from 2 different dealers 1 set new style other set old style. They do not interchange if using new style have to change the crank and the cam shaft so they can work together. This needs to be checked into. Guess Dodge is trying to keep this quiet. Thank god for 1 honest parts man. It seems all 2. 0 suffer from this. Then the consumer or in our case the garage has to fork out 1000. 00 of $$$$$to fix problem that is Dodges problem.
