29 problems related to engine have been reported for the 1998 Dodge Neon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Bad head gaskets due to flawed design.
After driving my Neon for about a year, I am finding the same problems as other owners are having. Item number one, the sun roof has just been repaired. The last item is the most important. The head gasket problem has arrived. From what I am learning, Chrysler is and has been receiving a number of complaints on this problem for some time. The cost in the repair is something that Chrysler does not want to bear. Instead will continue to pass it on to it's customers. I own two other Chrysler products that are much newer and they too are troublesome.
Took car to mechanic and was told head gasket was bad and there has been a lot of problems with this car and head gaskets.
Our 1998 Dodge Neon has blown the head gasket 3 times in the past 3 years. The last 2 times have been with in the last 2 months.
Blown head gasket with only 60,000+ miles on car got it used and have only had for 1 year 6 months. Actually problem occurred in January 2003. Oil draining from around oil filter. Had replaced filter and oil still draining around filter area. Took shop a while to find problem but, then said the head gasket needed to be replaced and repaired. April was when it got into a shop, but car had sat from January until April.
A technical service bulletin was issued on 9/08/1998 on the head gasket. I was not notified by the dealer or the Dodge. I have purchased new Chrysler vehicles before (1993 Plymouth voyager). The outcome of this problem will determine, if I purchase another Chrysler product again.
I have contacted Chrysler on 8/22/2002 and reported the problem they will not pay for the repairs. This is an ongoing problem. It may not be a vehicle safety issue but it could leave a motorist stranded. They have redesigned the headgasket but will not recall this product defect despite the numerous complaints by consumers. Please investigate.
Head gastket is blown, needs to be replaced. Mechanic said "there's oil and coolant everywhere". This car has only 39,000 miles! I've contacted 7 repair shops, average cost to fix is $700. Three mechanics told me that this problem is so common, they can't believe there hasn't been a recall yet. One mechanic said that he does these at least once a week. After much research on the internet, I have found that this is a very common problem--I alone have found nearly 100 reports of the same thing happening. As for the sunroof. . . It broke and was repaired in August 2000. Now, just over a year later (no more warranty) the same problem has happened again. There have been TSB's issued on both of these problems. A recall is needed immediately.
Repair was made promptly at cost $105. 60. . Asummed no responsibility for problem. . Have had numerous problems with headgaskets according to nhts a the dealer and Chrysler said there was no recall issued in spite of the fact that 3 service orders were issued possibly by Chrysler.
Loss of oil. Vehicle taken to an independent repair shop, and was informed of a blown head gasket. Feel free to provide any further information.
The owner should not be responsible for a well known "head gasket" defect, the manufacturer needs to take full responsibility.
Vehicle is pouring out oil onto the ground, and there is no oil inside of vehicle. The consumer has to put 8 cans of oil inside of vehicle last week. Dealership will be notified.
Head gasket has been leaking from engine, and dealership was aware of problem.
I do not know when the head gasket started leaking. I only found out about it 2/01. It turns out almost all owners of 95-98 Neon's have had head gasket problems and Chrysler has a case by case method of helping which is not fair. Head gaskest should last the life of the car. I contacted them three times about this and have been turned down each time.
Bad head gasket /and car losing oil , I was eventually putting 2 quarts in a week. Repair man said this was his 25th Dodge , Neon with this problem. He called dealer to see if there was a recall.
Blown head gasket.
Replacement of head gasket with only 19k miles.
Needs new head gasket at 62,000 miles. Paint is fogging up on the back for no reason. This is ridiculous and I see that there are many others complaining os similiar nature. The problem with the steering column going out is a major problem. That needs to be dealt with immediately along with the head gasket. This is a seriously issue and needs to be dealt with immediately.
Chrysler knows that there is a defect in the head gasket and has "secret warranty" which Chrysler has extended the warranty up to 5 years/100,000 miles. It is difficult to get dealers to honor this warranty.
I called a local dealer and they told me that the recall for the 1998 Dodge Neon sohc for the head gasket was no longer honored by Dodge, I have since found this to be false. I just want this taken care of and feel they should fix it for free. There is a rumor that Chrysler has a 5 year/ 100,000 mile warranty out for this problem in particular. Thanks, clyde and myhia hubble.
This car has been driven under normal condtions for approximately 18000 miles. I just don't see the head gasket becoming damaged after this amount of driving.
While the car was parked the consumer noticed that there was oil dripping under the car. Dealer diagnosed the car as having blown head gaskets.
Front motor mount failed.
When driving at any speed and shfting to another gear, the vehicle jerks and shakes and there is a leakage within the transmssion. Also, front of the vehicle where the motor mounts are located on the bottom and the top, broke and there was some type of leakage.
Vehicle has been experiencing problem with engine hesitatation during starting / ideling. Dealer notified, and informed consume rthat the engine valves were misfiring. Dealer was unable to correct problem. Seeking help or provide additional information on this matter.
When driving at any speed and going up hills, the consumer has to put the foot on the gas pedal hard to get some speed. On wet pavement the vehicle really doesn't have power. The vehicle will downshift, and when driving it will do light shifting. Vehicle is in the shop, and the dealer said the vehicle passed all the fuel tests, but the problem still occurs. The dealer did some work on the oil pan.
The driver noticed oil all over the driveway. The dealer stated that vehicle was no longer under warranty, and they would not look at it.
Head gasket is faulty, causing premature failure which could result in engine blowing.
Engine head gaskets has developed a leak which could cause vehicle to completely shutdown. Please give any further details.
