Nine problems related to other fuel system tank filling/charging have been reported for the 2008 Dodge Nitro. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When filling the gas tank up as the pump kicks off at least half a gallon of gas spills out of the tank splashing onto my legs and spilling on to the ground. I bought this vehicle used and was told to contact a Dodge dealer about a possible recall but the dealership has told me there isn't a recall but they've had several complaints about this issue. Also, recently I have been unable to lock my vehicle because a few seconds after activating the locks either manually or using the key fob the car unlocks and the headlights come on. I had to take the battery out of my key fob as it would continuously unlock and activate the headlights during the day and night. When manually locking the vehicle it still unlocks itself a few seconds later but does not continually unlock like when the key fob is in use.
When filling up the tank with gas it begins spewing out causing gas to run out of the tank down the car and onto the ground and myself. This happens every time I attempt to fill my gas tank completely.
When I fill the tank with fuel, it burps at the end of filling spilling gasoline onto the vehicle and the ground. There seems to be a problem with the venting system in the tank allowing air to build bup when filling.
Gas overflows from tank when filling up. There is nothing you can do to stop it. Apparently the problem is with a defective shutoff valve that is supposed to stop the fuel tank from exploding in the case of a bad accident. Seems like a issue to me. . .
Gas tank overflows when filling. It does not turn off pump automatically. Internet message forums show many others with the same problem. It is often reported to be a safety valve related to roll over wrecks.
When filling up the gas tank the gas overflows out onto the car and the floor. I have read that there is a valve that should stop the gas from spilling out of the tank in case of a rollover and that is the part that is not working properly. I have stopped trying to fill up my gas tank because of this problem.
When filling up gas tank, the bass nozzle safety clicks off and the fuel begins to spill out of the tank approx 1/4 to a 1/2 a gal every time I fill my tank.

When filling Nitro, you can not fill to full tank without fuel being spit back onto car ,ground and yourself. Pauses in fueling helps somewhat but not completely.
