Dodge Nitro owners have reported 10 problems related to automatic transmission torque converter (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
A month ago started hearing a high pitch whistling sound. Got louder as I accelerated, now a constant sound. Driving at 2,000 rpm it wouldn't shift into 2nd gear. Went into "limp mode" took to transmission shop said that torque converter was falling apart and debris got into the fluid and up into pump and. Transmission. Told I need a new transmission. 7yr old vehicle needing a transmission? had chevy's that lasted well over 210,000 mi. Filling gas tank waiting for automatic shut off. Never happened. Gasoline spewed out onto ground and me. This is constant. Tried a different pump and station, still gas not shutting off. I no longer fill up the gas tank. Having to figure out what size tank and how much gas is left in tank before adding more gas. This started 2 yrs ago. Chrysler step up and take responsibility for the substandard parts that are used to build these vehicles that the public put trust in!!!!!!! I will no longer buy a Dodge / Chrysler product.

The vehicle when in drive at any speed does a jerking motion forward as if it is slipping gears or losing power to the transmission. The sensation is worse, physically moving my body forward, when driving at higher speeds, 60-70. I know the problem was not due to "bad gas" because the car was idling relatively well. It was not electrical due to the fact that you could release your foot from the gas and "coast" and the sensation stopped. I followed up with Chrysler to confirm no other recalls had been issued on the car. When I brought the car to the dealer I told them I thought it was the torque converter. This first time they had the car for about 3 days. When I picked it up they said nothing was wrong with the torque converter, they simply updated the transmission via the computer. The first time I drove the car which was on the freeway- assuming it was fixed, the problem occurred immediately but more severe, causing my body to hit the steering wheel. It went back to the garage again, this time magically it was the torque converter and a seal. I got the car back, first time I drove it. . Still is doing the same thing. I cant drive my kids it, its not safe to drive on the freeway. It is an accident waiting to happen. Twice I was almost rear ended. I am forced to drive it to maintain my job but will only drive in the slow lane so that I have some kind of "out" it is now at the garage for the third time. The dealer is finally paying for the loaner. Even if they say they fixed it there is no way I can trust the vehicle. I have contacted Chrysler but have received no communication from them regarding this hazardous condition.
Vehicle shutters or surges between 38-50 mph. I have taken to two dealerships and neither had repaired it. I have had the torque converter replaced and computer reprogrammed and nothing has worked. It is still at the second dealership for them to try to figure out what is wrong with it. They were going to put a recording device on the vehicle to see if they could detect the problem.
2007 Dodge Nitro with transmission problems. Consumer states the vehicle surges and hesitates when traveling between 35 and 45 mph. Mechanic told them the surging was normal. The dealer performed a computer flash update, however the problem continued. The torque converter was replaced, but the problem became worse.
My 2007 Dodge Nitro had transmission issues, surging etc. The dealership replaced the torque converter which did not fix the problem. Now, stopped at a slight incline when I remove my foot from the brake it rolls backwards. Dealership states that this is normal. Updated 09/18/07.
Serious transmission shifting problems caused bog down in gear changing, then surging . Also, just shut down vehicle, leaving driver powerless to prevent a rear end collision. Terrible problem, that was not corrected by current Chrysler's TSB. I had computer update and new torque converter, and still shifting problems. Loud clanking noises, bumps while shifting. Strange sounds and vibrations from under floorboards. There should be a recall on this before someone got seriously hurt. Crysler needed to take action on this and quit making excuses very dangerous.
In February of 2007,my wife and I purchased a 2007 Dodge Nitro from ken garf west valley Dodge. We fell in love with the car the moment we saw it, but it has become a nightmare. Within weeks of bringing it home we noticed a hesistation/surging problem with the motor whenever we traveled at a speed of 35 to 45 mph. We immediately contacted the maintenance department of the dealer and scheduled an appointment. We brought the Nitro in; they did a computer flash update to fix the problem and sent us on our way. Again, we noticed the same problem shortly after returning home. So, we made another appointment and brought the vehicle back in. They did the same thin(computer flash update) and told us whatever residual surging we felt in the vehicle was normal. Fot the third time, we brought it home and the problem continued to worsen, we brought it back in to the dealer. But this time while I was there I test-drove another Nitro of the exact kind to find that this problem was not normal. After doing this and telling the maintenance department that I had test-drove another Nitro, they decide we neede to schedule another appointment to replace the torque converter. We scheduled an appointment for a month away to give them time to get the parts in. Once again we brought the Nitro in, they kept it a few days to change out the torque converter. When we picked it up they said it was fixed. We were excited and relieved to finally get this behind us. Soon after this, the surging was still taking place, but now at any speed we tried to hold steady. We called again and they told us it was normal, I reminded them that I had test-drove the exact car and that it was in fact, not normal. Yet again, the scheduled another appointmentfor USA to bring the car in. This time the head mechanic drove it with the computer hooked up to it. He stated that it was getting worse, but the computer was showing no errors and they could'nt fix it.
Transmission bogs down. Does not shift properly. Will hang up at 50 mph causing vehicle to not go. Torque convertor locks up at 40-50 mph. This is a serious problem due to not being able to accellerate during lane changes on highway.
Between first and second gear, there is a shudder in either the transmission or torque converter. This is a clunking noise that most prevalently appears in stop-and-go traffic. I have argued with my dealer and with Dodge for a remedy to this, and they both refuse to acknowledge this problem. It first appeared around January of 2007 and continues. Also, I have previously contacted your office regarding the stalling issue of my Nitro. On at least two occasions, my Nitro has stalled while traveling between 50 and 60 mph. The car loses all power and all lights illuminate on the dashboard. I have received a safety recall for this item, but I have no confidence in the repairs performed by Dodge. I believe this vehicle is an unreasonably dangerous product.
2007 Dodge Nitro safety issues customer states that after 3 months he noticed a hesitation in power an hard shifting* the consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and after several attempts to repair the problem which included replacement of the torque converter, the dealership informed the consumer there was no fix for the problem. The consumer believed the problem to be potentially dangerous because of the transmission shutter, loosing power in forward and reverse and hard shifting.
