Automatic Transmission Cooler problems of the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500

Five problems related to automatic transmission cooler have been reported for the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2000

Dealer replaced transmission quick cooler connect per notification. Dealer left fitting loose, resulting in fluid leak at 15720 miles. I complained to Chrysler headquarters. Chrysler said they would consider goodwill assistance if problem develops after warranty. In June 2000, at 49898 miles, trans failed. I paid $100 deductible on trans overhaul per goodwill assistance file 7360750. A few days later, seal failed and pumped out trans fluid. Dealer replaced seal. In sept 2000, dealer couldn't find reason for trans overheating at 54480 miles. In Nov 2000, trans failed at 57426 miles. Dealer finally agreed to replace with remanufactured trans. In Dec 2000, trans failed again, at 57492. I have been out tow bills and not lender vehicle.

2 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem

Failure Date: 05/15/1997

While driving the transmission overheated, causing transmission fluid to leak onto the manifold, resulting in a vehicle fire. Please provide any details.

3 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem

Failure Date: 05/14/1997

Engine fire due to the plastic retainers in the transmission cooler.

4 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem

Transmission quick connect failed causing damage to transmission prior to recall notice, dealership will not honor recall repair.

5 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem

Owner has received recall notice and has not been able to get service for the vehicle. (quick connect fittings in the transmission cooler pressure line).
