13 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) have been reported for the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I bought an 04 Ram 1500 5. 7 hemi that had around 80k miles on it when I bought it in oct 2010. It was awesome the first and a half I had it, only minor repairs I. E battery, idler pulley, ignition switch. I did regular maintenance on it as well as oil changes. In late March 2012 I went to put gas in my truck and it would not let me put more than 10 or 15 cents in before it would "back fill" I was trying to figure out what the problem could be with that, then in early April 2012 I was driving home after running some errands, the truck had run great all day just like normal, but about 8 miles from house I hear this "thunk" and I have no power and I had this awful shaking and rattling noise. There were not even any warning lights telling we that there was something wrong, I called someone to tow it home that night. I did thankfully have another car to drive. In the months since I have been slowly tearing the engine apart with my dad, this week we finally pulled the heads and discovered that my # 6 piston was completely disintegrated and had punched a hole in my block! my original thought was that this was just a random fluke and it was just mine, but after reading on some Dodge forums I see that it was not just mine! this is ridiculous for an engine that has no more miles than this and had been properly maintained. My parents have a 1999 Ford f150 that has almost 300k on it and has not been maintained nearly as well. . . Read more...
2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5. 7l hemi will stop running while driving. The engine completely shuts off while the vehicle is driving and the steering locks up. I have had several close calls and am currently seeking help in this matter. This is an extremely dangerous problem. I've taken it to three mechanics who have replaced all the oxygen sensors, the mass air flow sensor, throttle body, egr valve, air intake filter and the crank shaft sensor. There seems to be no end to this and everyone is just shooting in the dark. The dealerships do not get a code when they hook up to the vehicle. I am in fear of my safety. I have found several other people on the internet with the same problem.
2004 Ram 1500 5. 7 hemi stalls at low engine speeds, often at stop signs, traffic lights, or parking lot maneuvers. Will usually start immediately back up, sometimes requires slight accelerator pressure when cranking in order to obtain self-sustaining engine speed. During decelerations, engine rpm is erratic and will often encounter a transient drop in rpm's to approximately 400 rpm before engine dies. Issue seems to be more common and severe in cold weather, or when engine is cold, but has occurred under all conditions. This has been a persistent problem for about two years, happening anywhere from once a day to a dozen times. Multiple dealerships and mechanics have looked at this, without result. The computer has been updated, the sensors, egr valve, and intake manifold cleaned, and the throttle body has been replaced. Still not fixed. Vehicle has been well maintained and has less than 55k miles. This is an expensive, dangerous, and frustrating condition.
I don't remember the exact date or mileage as the first failure's were low in frequency. The truck dies after filling up with fuel. You can be up to speed but normally happens shortly after fill up and entering traffic. No trouble lights are showing on the dash and truck normally starts back up fairly easily, although sounds flooded. Now the truck does this at almost every fill up. No code diagnostics are showing. I have replaced the egr and spark plugs, no change.
2004 Dodge Ram 1500, v8, stalls when pressing brake and releasing, coming to a stop at an intersection. Also stalls sometimes when moving at a low speed, has stalled two times while driving down the middle of the road. Usually starts back up, there has been a couple times that it does not start up. Last time I checked, it is very dangerous to have your vehicle stall while driving down the road, stopping at an intersection, or, going at a low speed. Someone is going to be killed! and no one seems to know the fix to this. I have replaced the egr valve and the brake switch, neither have worked. Dodge needs to own up and fix this problem.

My truck stalls as I come to a stop. This happens probably about 4 times a month since the date above. The dealership hasn't been able to find the problem. I have read on forums online that a ton of other people are having the same problem. Some say it has to do with erg valve and it should be recalled. They said they replace the egr valve and the problem is fixed.
My 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5. 7 liter hemi stalls inconsistently. This has happened several times over the last 3 years, on the highway and when slowing down at stop lights. The truck has always started right back up until yesterday. I was in traffic, going about 30 mph when it shut down. I tried repeatedly to start the truck back up; it finally did after several tries. I learned that issue is synonymous with 2004 rams. We have already replaced the throttle body and egr valve. This is obviously a safety issue. We pull a horse trailer on regular bases and can not take the chance of someone hitting us due to stalling, let alone losing control of the vehicle. What an outrage that Dodge doesn't take responsibility for this!! I love my truck, but now I am shopping for a new truck, not Dodge, with a heavy heart.
The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. During acceleration and deceleration at any speed, the vehicle would stall and then immediately restart. The engine warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the egr was potentially causing the failure, but was not certain. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 73,000.
Egr malfunction at 29,800 miles just bought from dealer at 28,500 find it hard to believe an egr valve can fail at this mileage and isn't covered under emissions warranty.
I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5. 7 liter with 48k miles that has had numerous problems (e. G. Erg valve replaced, power steering reservoir (currently being replaced), and engine stalling at an idle, while turning, while backing up, or coasting. The stalling occurs out of the blue as if someone flipped a switch causing the engine to die. The electrical stays on, just the engine dies. Most of the time it starts right back up but sometimes it takes awhile. The stalling has happened numerous times and is very unpredictable. The stalling began about three - four months ago. I currently have it in for repairs at lee's summit Dodge, lee's summit missouri.
Originally had a problem with the egr position sensor and the dealership re programmed this with new software this took place 02/07/06. Seemed to take care of original stalling issue. Then on 12/2/06 I was exiting the freeway and my truck was shaking bad. I could tell that the engine was misfiring. If the engine went down to an idle it would stall, which it did several times, leaving all system components powerless (no steering or brakes etc). I had my pregnant wife in the truck with me at the time. Putting her in danger this way left me less than thrilled. We took it to a dealership right away. They told us that cylinder #4 was not firing (no compression) and two other cylinders had limited compression. They ended up calling some Dodge tech. Line. Since the dealership said that they couldn't find a TSB regarding this problem. Turned out there is one in existence #02021 from 11/4/2002. The tech line said it sounds like one or more valve springs could be broken. The dealership in fact took the valve covers off and sure enough there is a broken valve spring. They told us several others seem weak. I have 71,500 miles on the truck and you guessed it surprise the warranty expired at 70,000. This is going to cost around $1200. 00 out of pocket!!! I want Dodge to back this problem. There are alot of discussion boards with innocent people that have the same problem. A broken valve spring is an obvious error on the engineers end of things. . . Bad design. . . . . Faulty metal. This is not a wear and tear issue. I have heard that Dodge is on their 3rd design on the valve springs for these trucks. Obviously they are aware of the problem. If they have to keep re-manufacturing. But that puts the rest of us that have the original design in harms way. It is a very scary feeling to have you truck quit on you in the middle of rush hour traffic. Thank god that nothing happened to me or my wife.
Second complaint - 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab hemi with 700 miles (I only had for 2 weeks) began stalling so I brought to the dealer for service. They said it was the egr valve and that they would need to order this part on national backorder. They retained my vehicle and have had it for 3 days. I keep calling and they say that they cannot get the part. I have called Chrysler customer service and they cannot help. The delaer refuses to swap the part from his inventory because he does not want his inventory disabled, but it is fine with him if my car that I already paid 40k for is disabled. Will write more when I know more.
