36 Driveshaft problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2012

When slowing down kept hearing a humming noise coming from the rearend. About 10 minutes later I slowed down to make a turn and boom the driveshaft falls out of the rearend and the rear wheels lock up. The pinion nut had come off and pinion yolk (still attached to the driveshaft) came out of the rearend. The Chrysler dealership determined that the driveshaft was not reusable and had to replace the rearend housing and all it's internal parts.

Driving vehicle and heard a clanking noise from rear end, it got louder over the next 2-3 miles then drive shaft dropped from rear differential. Called Chrysler to ask if there were any known problems and was informed there was none. Had vehicle towed over 50 miles to a garage to have drive shaft reinstalled, noticed a grinding sound while driving both on accelerate and decelerate. Received a recall notice later in 2012 about the rear axle pinion nut being faulty. Called dealer and set appointment to have recall fixed along with a second recall for a/c blower motor door, took 2 days down time and when I went to pick up truck, the m34 recall as its known was not addressed but a/c was fixed. I was told that they would have to fix any damage caused to the rear end from the recall which is the noise im hearing but unfortunately Chrysler does not even have the part nor an expected release date for the part to be available and that they would repair everything at the same time. After over a month of checking back on progress of part I informed the service writer that the noise is getting worse, at that time he stated to make an appointment to bring vehicle in and they would expedite the part and get it fixed and they would get me into a loaner or rental since I use my truck daily for work. When I went to set the appointment a week or so later I was told they cant give me a loaner or rental. . . . . . Another cost out of my pocket besides the repair an tow I already paid and the two days down I had to take for the first recall visit. . . . I then proceeded to call the number on the recall notice to speak with someone at Chrysler and they said they would see what they can do. . . . That was 3/5/2013. . . . Only to find out that because my truck is now over the 60 month 100k mileage im not eligible for warranty rental coverage. . . . . The problem occurred almost a year ago,.

I have a 2010 ram with 50k miles on it and just got a wake up call. While running with rush hour traffic, I took my foot off the gas, heard a loud whine, then kablam!!! the rear of the truck locked up and kicked me dead sideways, luckily I had just gotten into a gap between traffic. Nothing like having a full size crew cab truck sliding sideways on an interstate in the middle of traffic. I managed to get the truck straightened up and as it was about to slide around the other way I heard the rear end explode and the rear wheels freed up and I got off the side of the road. Kudos to the drivers behind me, cars and the 2 18 wheelers that were able to avoid t boning me as I went on this wonder ride. I climbed out the passenger door and called my dealer, they hooked me up with roadside and an hour later!!! with rush hour traffic just missing my truck by inches, I got to my dealer. They have yet to get it on the rack to look at it. I did crawl under it in the lot. Drive shaft fell off. The pinion apparently came loose, I can see it inside the differential and all the threads are present. The drive shaft is beat all up, you can see where it hung on the frame when the truck went sideways. The front of the dif looks cracked, the pinion is inside the dif wedged against everything. The trans seams to be leaking fluid as well, cracked????? this is a major safety issue!!!! first mine is not the only ram this has happened to. My dealer has had 1 other in for the same issue, and another for no oil in the rear diff. Its just a matter of time before this seriously hurts or kills someone. I have many moons of driving experience under my belt and was able to keep the truck from splattering. Call it skill, luck, whatever, but it could've turned out very badly.

40 Driveshaft problem

The rear end seized which in turn snapped the drive shaft in half. The drive shaft then punctured the fuel tank, and flattened the spare tire. This happened while making a right hand turn onto a side street, my speed at the time was aprox 15 mph. It lifted the rear of the truck off the road and slammed down to a stop. I am glad I was not on the hiway.
