Vehicle was stopped. My wife was sitting in the passenger seat, tried to unlatch the seat belt to exit the vehicle. The buckle would not unlatch to let her out of the seat. As she tried to " squiggle" out of the seat belt, the retractor locked and she was trapped in the seat. I attempted to operate release button and it failed to release belt buckle. I tried to get the retractor to unlatch and it got tighter and tighter. I would have cut the belt in an emergency, but were only a few miles from home. I removed a plastic trim piece on the outboard part of the seat to gain access to the belt attachment bolt. Luckily I had the special tool required to remove the bolt. A torx 45 star socket and ratchet wrench. I removed the bolt and freed her by freeing the end of the seat belt that attaches to the outboard passenger seat base. Called local dealer bay Dodge - panama city, FL. They would repair for normal parts and labor. They told me to call Chrysler customer service 800-992-1997. Talked to rep (terry lynn) she said there was no recall. I told here I wanted to formally report a life safety issue with the vehicle. She gave me a case number 24486512, she said Chrysler reviews the complaints, but I would not receive a reply. I feel this is a defect, not a malfunction. If you go into the water or have fire, or are in a freeway pile up in the fog, the occupant would be trapped and probably be killed if they did not have an instrument to cut the seat belt. Chrysler acted as if I were complaining about something insignificant like a radio knob falling off. I contacted the ftc consumer complaints division and filed same complaint case [xxx]. I stumbled onto to your website on my own through ntsb link. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The front driver's side seat belt retractor jams and does not keep the upper section of the seat belt tight against the driver's chest. When moving around during normal driving this causes multiple inches of slack to develop and the driver needs to manually pull out on the seat belt and feed it back to remove the slack. The upper mounting loop and the seatbelt itself are clean and not damaged.
Seat baits fail to retract automatically. I would consider this a major flaw in the seat belt hardware. It started on the drivers side and then a year later the passenger side. Also causes you to sometimes close the door on the seat belt because it didn't retract and hung out the door. It broke the button on the seat belt fabric so now my seat belt has no stopper either.

I was going to work traveling south on a magor road going 35 mph when another vehicle cut directly in front of my path making a left hand turn onto a cross street. There was no time to brake and my vehicle slammed into him. The other driver was cited by the police with a "failure to yield" citation. My seat belt did not lock and the airbags did not deploy. Upon impact my body was thrown forward and up resulting in whiplash and other injuries to my neck, shoulders and back. I hit my head on the front visor area and my chest area on the steering wheel.
Drivers side seat belt latch locked and could not be released. Chrysler said there were no problems with the seat belt latches in the Ram 1500 2007 model but apparently I am not the first.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that both front seat belt retractors no longer functioned. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised that she would have to replace the retractors at her expense. In addition, the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 01v119000 (seat belts:front:retractor). The contact called the manufacturer who verified that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 110,000.
1 person injured(driver) in Dodge ram. However 2 other vehicles involved and not sure about their injuries. I accidently rear ended vehicle ahead of me which caused that vehicle to rear-end vehicle ahead of it. My vehicle(Dodge ram) was totaled. Frontal impact of Dodge was very severe and caused me(driver) head and cervical trauma, resulting in emergency room visit and rehab therapies. All airbags in Dodge ram failed to deploy and driver seatbelt failed to retract/respond resulting in my head/neck/spinal injury. I have written Dodge-Chrysler, they say they sent someone to inspect truck and say they are not responsible for the airbag and seatbelt not working. Dodge/Chrysler also write the airbag/seatbelt was not suppose to work due to the speed limit (40mph) driven and due to more of a side impact than frontal. However, the impact was both frontal and front side. (I have pictures).

Air bag did not deploy/seat belt did not lock. I was the only person in my vehicle. I accidentally rear ended a car who had abruptly stopped in traffic in front of me. Severe heavy damage was done to the front driver side and passenger side of my vehicle. My Dodge was declared a total loss. I suffered severe pain/injury to my head and neck. All persons involved in my and the other vehicle had to seek medical attention. My 2009 Dodge ram was purchased new off the Dodge lot in 2009. . . Updated 10/20/11.
The passenger and driver seat belts are locked in the retracted position. There wasn't any event that led to the failure, they both just quit working. I researched the issue on the internet and apparently it is something that happens quite often leaving both the driver and occupant without safety restraints. This is very dangerous and a safety recall needs to be issued to both notify and to protect the public.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that he was unable to pull the front drivers side seat belt out from its retractor. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the sensor under the drivers seat failed. The vehicle was not repaired. 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 seat belts remain in retractable position and cannot be used on both passenger and driver sides. Mileage 80500 this is a safety hazard because no matter how hard you pull on the seat belts they will not come loose from the retractable position.
I have a 2000 Dodge ram truck. I have a high-back booster seat in the back for my child. The best spot for a child is the rear center seat, but you must have a lap and shoulder belt for a booster. The outboard spots in the back seat of my truck are both lap and shoulder belts. Both rear outboard seats, are incorrect. The retractor is not an alr, elr, or a switchable, and they both have sliding latch plates - which mean that in the event of a crash or rapid deceleration the belts are not going to grip and stop any person from coming forward. The owners manual says that in the event of an emergency they will stop moving. I tested this out by driving and coming to a quick stop, and the two lap and shoulder belts in the rear never gripped. I don't know if this is a recall thing or if my truck just has broken back seat belts. Please help.
There was no failure or accident involved. While renting a 2010 Dodge ram pickup - shoulder harness was so high it rubbed my neck so raw I had to hold it away with left hand. Shoulder harness designs are not taking into consideration people that are short 5' or less. The vehicle safety board needs to investigate why all the shoulder harnesses are mounted so high on the sidewall of the vehicle which in fact can cause serious bodily harm to a short person driving, if involved in a bad accident. I have had open heart surgery and have had a pacemaker implanted, and this extremely high seat belt nearly cuts my neck. My Toyota tundra is also high, but not nearly so much as this rental Dodge.

2007 Ram 1500 driver's sea belt buckle will not accept the buckle. I must drive without a belt until the latch is replaced.
No accident as of yet. No reasonable cause of condition found at present time. Safety belts locked in fully retracted state, and are unable to extend for fastening. No accident has happened at current time to owners knowledge.
Front seat belts lock up will not work and a safety hazard and cannot bring passengers get tickets for not wearing seat belts.
Takata recall central valley Dodge jeeo modesto,CA has failed to help me.
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 laramie - passenger side seat belt release mechanism failed - belt remained locked across chest and lap. Red push button release depressed, failed to unlatch seat belt. Passenger unable to release belt from fastener. Belt became tighter and tighter, to the point of crushing pain. Cut belt to release passenger. Thank god not in an accident or imminent danger somewhere, unable to release belt to escape.
In a 2005 Dodge ram quad cab pickup the rear over-the-shoulder seatbelts are defective. The right rear buckle broke and I had it replaced under warranty thinking nothing of it. It was replaced in April or may this year. I have a child seat in the center rear seat, using the seatbelt as the restraint. Upon braking to avoid colliding with another driver who cuts me off, I heard the sounds of cracking and breaking of plastic. I didn't notice anything until later when I noticed the child seat a little loose. After further examination, the plastic on the lap belt buckle was shattered. I tried tightening it up but it will not completely tighten like it should. This happened later last month for the third time, this time to the left rear when a passenger just went to re-position herself. She was only 80 some pounds!!
the consequences are as follows: the brittle hard plastic piece on the buckle prevents the lap section to tighten correctly. Unless the whole seat belt assembly is replaced, just to fix a broken piece of brittle plastic, the seatbelt is useless. A passenger could easily slide out from under the belt in a frontal impact collision. What was done: I attempted to contact the Chrysler corporation in detroit. A customer rep stated he would contact my local dealership to recommend not charging labor fees just to "diagnose" the problem when it is obviously broken, and the dealer was to contact me in return with an appointment. That never happened. I needed the documents from the dealership to fax to Chrysler to request for reimbursement of the replacement costs. I am looking out for everyone else out there with the same problem. I still have the 2 remainder broken belts installed. It is evident that Chrysler obviously realized the problem. I purchased a brand new Jeep wrangler 4-door. All six seatbelts are made of the same durable rubbery substance that the ones in the front seat of my Dodge ram are made of. This is the way they all should be.
