Seven problems related to speed control cable have been reported for the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Throttle cable, where it hooks onto fuel injection pump, is unraffling, according to recall 01 v 037 000. This can cause throttle not to return to idle. Consumer states he has replaced throttle cable and paid for the repairs he did not think it was safe to drive with throttle cable frayed.
My wife was trying to pass another car, when she stomped down on the accelerator to pass, it stayed there and the truck started to run away with her, she kept stomping on the pedal to get it to relese but it would not. She did get it to release somehow after several tries. After she got home I investigated the problem I found that the accelerator had frayed and must have somehow hung up on the tubing surrounding the cable. She could have been killed. I hope DC will recall or do something about this.
Prior to recall (970) consumer experienced problems with the throttle linkage cable being frayed at the connection.
Throttle linkage cable is not properly enclosed/frayed. Yh.
While driving on the highway, consumer had the cruise control engaged, however when consumer touched the brakes to disengage the cruise control it did not respond, consumer then went to turn the switch for the cruise control off which is located on the steering wheel but it still would not come out of cruise control, consumer was able to pull over and shut off the engine, upon inspection of the vehicle, consumer discovered that the cruise control cable was frayed, and had become hung up on the hard plastic end of the cruise cable housing, the cable was replaced but is the same design of the first one, consumer believes this may happen again.
While driving throttle cable wore out through its covering, and wire became unravled, causing it to be stuck in open position. Dealer has been contacted.
