Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 17 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving down highway gasoline started spewing under pressure from top of fuel pump, pulled into parking lot away from other vehicles and waited five to ten minutes before gasoline stopped spraying out. I had to have it towed home where I could check to find out if it was only a rubber hose as I expected or something else. I found out it was a fitting at top of the fuel pump which looks like metal connector where the gasoline was spraying out of a pin hole, I lost about 5 gallons of gas in 14 miles of highway driving.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle jerked and sputtered without warning. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. The vehicle did restart but failed to accelerate. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who replaced the transfer fuel pump. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 52,300.
Turn signal when switched activates the opposite turning light. Rear tail tight housings are not water tight and blows bulbs after raining. Windshield wipers act on their own when its raining and now dome and console lights dont work. No blown fuses. The third fuel pump line is also defective. Will eventually break from vibration. New ones have better vibration housing and dealership had stock. (125 of these and none other because everyone was having the same one break). Key falls out of ignition and rear passenger side door does not lock or unlock when button is pushed. Air bags were recently recalled but they don't have enough part to get it fixed. I must wait. Very unsafe vehicle to be an owner of.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that the dash board was cracked and was starting to collapse. Also, the contact mentioned that the left fuel pump would intermittently fail and cause the vehicle to independently decelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the dash board, fuel tank and injector pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 92,000.

The fuel pump on my Dodge diesel failed on me while driving with my wife and 2 month old daughter during one of the worst snow/ice storms of the season. We were in rural central missouri about 7 miles from the nearest town. Fortunately we were in an area where we had cell phone service and were able to call a friend to come and get us. What makes me furious is that I later found out this type of malfunction is very common and Dodge has actually discontinued the original under hood fuel pump because of it's poor history and I had to pay almost $900 to have an in tank fuel pump installed. I feel this should be a recall item because I don't feel I should have to pay for their poor engineering.
: the contact stated while traveling 50 mph, the vehicle stalled and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where the fuel and injector pumps were replaced.

Replaced transfer pump fuel, $3,400. 00 at Dodge dealership in blythe calif. I have owned 3 Dodge diesels in the 2000 and every one had the injector pump failure, however, most occurted b4 warreny was up and were replaced. My truck and 130k miles and is not under warrenty.
1999 Dodge cummins diesel had the lift pump fail and took out my injector pump because it starved it of diesel fuel do to the falure of the lift pump. I had a new lift pump installed and a rebuilt injector pump installed. I understand this is a very common problem wit the electric lift pumps I talked to several mechanics who said they see it happen all the time. Very costly fix!.

1. The first incident, may 11,2000 was a recall for the replacement of the transfer pump due to premature internal armature shaft bushing wear. This was a recall by Dodge. The second incident occurred August 24,2004. 2. The failure causes the vehicle to run extremely rough, and makes the vehicle was not drivable. Failure at highway speeds would cause a sudden slowdown of the vehicle. 3. In both instances, the transfer pump had to be replaced. Currently, this vehicle only has 31,000 miles on it. The cost to replace these pumps can be extremely expensive to the vehicle owner. This appears to be a significant problems with Dodge trucks which have the cummins diesel engine.
Engine quit working due to lack of fuel. When this occurred vehicle stalled. This caused loss of power brakes and steering. This failure occurred due to fuel pump failure. Dealership replaced fuel pump 3 times.
My Dodge Ram 2500 diesel truck loss power and would not run well at all. I asked archer Dodge on Jan 20, 2004 to find and fix the problem. A fuel transfer pump, part # 5080885aa (replacement pump #) was installed for a total of $500. The failure of this pump in this vehicle is common and is documented in an article by chuck arnold "what happens to Dodges". Failure of the injector pump, a $2000 replacemnet job is common when the charge pump fails, I was lucky. Dodge recalled defective pumps installed in all trucks built 7 days prior to the day my truck was built. I feel I got one of the older pumps for one thing and that Dodge should pay for the work. The other thing is that there is no idiot light or guage telling you there is a problem with the charge pump. I am looking for a retrofit so I can monitor this pressure and prevent damage to my fuel injection pump in the future. This engine should run for 1,000,000 miles and I dont want the possibility of a $3000 workover every 60,000 to 120,000 miles ( the estimated length of time before failure for the charge pump. ) failure of this system is total and if it happens at the wrong place could cause loss of life, fire, and serious personal and property damage. I would like to see Dodge recall all units and retrofit them with a device that monitored the discharge pressure of the charge pump, notifying the driver that a failure of the fuel system is eminant. This could be done with an additional gauge or even a engine warning light. I have called Dodge and opened a complaint #12000342, but I did not get the satisification of hearing that it was a serious problem to them. If it is common knowledge that this failure occurs, why not alert the customers of Dodge that it is a probem. Even though my truck was not recalled, it appears it should have been based on what I have learned from other owners and Dodge. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact experienced issues with the 6-speed manual transmission in his vehicle. The clutch would fail while driving at various speeds. In addition, the gears would slip as if the clutch were depressed and the contact smelled a burning odor while driving in reverse. He took the vehicle to multiple dealers more than ten times. One of the dealers installed a new clutch, but it failed 10,000 miles later. At approximately 34,000 miles, the dealer repaired the clutch again; however, the issue recurred. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The current mileage was approximately 37,000 and failure mileage was approximately 500. Updated 1/5/09 the consumer also stated when backing up his trailer there was a burning smell coming from the clutch area. A transmission shop examined the clutch and pressure plated and discovered the clutch was worn and the pressure plate had heat marks from clutch slippage. The mechanic also stated the pressure plate appeared much older than the clutch itself because of the large strands of fiber stuck in the cover that appeared to be from the previous clutch that came apart. The engine light had illuminated. It was determined that the fuel injection pump needed to be replaced. Updated 1/09/09.
Lift pump failure on 2001 Dodge cummins diesel pickup.
I am amazed there are no reports on 1998 1/2 - 2001 model Dodge pickups with the cummins diesel engine as the bosch vp44 main (injector) fuel pump has a failure rate of 100%. I've had 3 fail so far & for diesel mechanics it's common knowledge that it's not a matter of if the the vp44 pump will fail, it's just a matter of when. The last time a pump died on me was when I was going down the interstate @ 70 mph & the engine just shut off. I knew immediately it was another fuel pump failure, but other drivers may not realize what went wrong & I'd be surprised if there haven't been any wrecks due to vp44 pump failure, which gives you no advance warning - it just quits. In 2002 Dodge/cummins charged the fuel system on the diesel engine for Dodge pickups (including a different fuel pump), but all 1998 1/2 thru 2001 models came with the same bosch vp44 main injector pump.
