10 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 08/26/2006

At 62 mph steeltex radial at dot vnw81xl m/s 265-75-r16 threw the complete tread of the rear tire and beat the truck up to the tune of $4,000. 00 by insurance estimate. Tires all wear evenly about 3/4 thread left rotated every other oil change, only slight weather checking noted at that time. Tire beat the bed in about 16",destroyed running boards, twisted rear bumper, destroyed rear tail light assembly. Afraid of other tires. Parked it until I can get an answer as to what my rights are. Will have to pay high insurance deductible and get tires removed before somebody gets killed. After looking at the entries on this web site concerning these tires something appears to be very wrong here. Someone should have gave us firestone steeltex owners a heads up about a potential problem instead of saying these are not the tires that are defective and dropping the price to talk you into buying them.

I did not lose control and there was no other damage. On 4-22-2006, 234 miles after the first blowout, the left rear tire blew out in a similar fashion. Damage this time was $1,896. 82. The tires were cooper dominator sport a/t, size lt 265/75-16e. The dot code for both tires was upw8 xdj 3104. The first tire had 22,467 miles at the time of blowout; the second 22,701. In both cases I was heading eastbound on I-40, the first time at mp 259, 14 miles west of santa rosa, nm; the second at mp 122, about 60 miles east of amarillo, TX. Both tires were inflated to 80 psi, checked the morning of 4-21-06. My speed for at the first blowout was 60 mph; 53 mph at the second. Temperature at the first blowout was 70; for the second was 85. Pavement in both cases was smooth, dry asphalt. Two identical tires that were properly inflated, were not overloaded, were being driven well under the speed limit, should not blow out like this. There is obviously a serious problem with these tires.

Several vehicles had to swerve to avoid being struck by the large piece of tire tread almost resulting in a serious accident. Staff were able to pull over and discovered the tread had separated from the tire causing damage to the left rear fender. The tire retained air but the tread was completely separated from the tire leaving the steel belts and underlayment exposed. Local firestone dealers told us we would be charged top replace the tire.

We were traveling on interstate 44 in missouri and all of a sudden we heard a loud banging/thumping and were losing control of the back of our truck. We thought we had a blowout so we pulled over onto the shoulder. Initially, the tire looked fined until we looked at the back of the tire and the damage to the side of the truck. It looked like a tread separation. We replaced that tire with the spare tire and traveled to the next available town to buy a new tire. We were afraid to travel any further without a spare tire not knowing what caused the initial problem and to make sure we were prepared if something happened to another one of the tires. We still have the tire that we believe had a tread separation.

I was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 v-10 along interstate 50 in sacramento, CA in the fast or left lane and had installed brand new super swamper ssr 305/70/16 tires w/4,000 miles on them and while driving approximately 70 mph the left rear tire flew apart. The tread had separated from the steel cord in 2 large pieces and flew back at the car behind me causing a major car accident involving 3 cars not including mine. It caused extensive damage to my truck (apprx. $3,000. 00) the police did an onsite report and after speaking to everyone had decided to let me go without a citation or using my insurance because it was determined that the person behind me caused the accident by trying to swerve and miss the flying debris hitting her car. I tried to take them back to the store where I purchased them and received a response of call the manufacturer which I did with no luck. All I have at this point is pictures but no dot#.

27 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/07/2002

My 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 came new with 5 goodyear wrangler rt/s 245/75 r16 tires. I replaced 4 tires at 78,000 miles with 3 new rt/s tires and rotated in the original spare. I kept the best 2 tires for spares. I used an old spare for about a week and noticed some vibration. The goodyear dealer indicated the tread was separating. While on the turnpike, the tread on the right front tire separated catastrophically at 75 mph and damaged the quarter panel, wheel well, lower passenger doorframe, steering mechanism (track bar), front bumper cowling, and dented the right rear quarter panel. The tire didnt go flat, but threw off all the tread. Fortunately, I retained control of the vehicle and no one was injured. The tire that separated was the original equipment spare, manufactured in 1996. This tire failed at about 30,000 miles. I brought the failed tire to the local goodyear dealership, perry tire and alignment in stillwater, where the owner forced me to send it to goodyear for analysis. As the tire was over 4 years old, he claimed goodyear would not warrantee the tire, but might make some adjustment. I stupidly did this, acting in good faith and trusting the integrity of both companies. Its one year later, and guess what: I have received no notification from either company, perry tire has changed ownership, and goodyear has "lost" my tire. By the way, goodyear's representative said they never deal directly with the customer - dealers do that, then goodyear deals with them. At about 55,000 miles, one of the newer tires had tread separation; another has worn unevenly to show the belt. Both were detected before failure on the road. The bottom line: 3 of 8 of my goodyear wrangler rt/s tires failed due to tread separation, one providing significant risk to my family and others. I am without the tire that disintegrated, and am considering seeking legal action. I understand tires wear out, but they should not fail in this manner even if worn down to the belts.
