I was driving home started hearing what sounded like grinding and some vibration, I stopped and looked all over under the hood and under the truck and could not find anything, I continued a few miles and the noise disappeared, the next day I left and the noise started up again about 30 miles from home on the freeway, I was doing about 70 mph,, when I pulled off to side of the highway, the noise disappeared before I stopped to look it over again, I turned around and went home and heard nothing at all, got under the truck and didn't see nothing, the next day it happened again doing about 55mph,this time it was getting load, I made it back home, looked over and between the left front wheel and noticed something wrong with the front driveshaft, when I got under the truck ,I noticed the front shaft coming out of the front differential didn't look right, I looked closer and found that the front yoke coming out of the differential has a round ring rock guard from what I have been told is pressed onto the yoke shaft to protect the seal, and it has weights on it also to balance the shaft, the ring or rock guard has come loose and was spinning on the shaft causing damage to the differential housing and to the oil seal, it did some pretty good grinding damage to the housing, I have taken it to a driveshaft repair place, they said the will need to rebuild the front differential to check for other damage to the bearings and so, as it looks now the mechanic says he doesn't know if he can save the differential housing with all the damage, as for now I cant afford to fix it, the rng or rock guard for now is getting held back from the housing with electrical tape, I know it sounds bad but currently being cut from my job with no income, I have no other choice but to drive it the way it is ,it is my only means of transportation.
While my dealership has taken care of my 3 issues here, I want to let folks know: front end steering. 2 yrs after purchase, I started to have front end steering shimmy. The first time, the tie rod became loose, and was replaced by the dealership. 2nd time, I was backing out of my driveway, (loose sand) and the tie rod end literally snapped in 2, rendering the steering useless. Reading the ladies story about her husband being ticketed for falling asleep when I have had it happen to my truck I thought I needed to speak out. Drive line issue: the support bearing on the drive shaft, went while driving with out notice. Luckily I was driving down my drive way which is about 500 feet long and wasn't going but about 15 mph. It had to be towed in and was covered under warranty. I love my truck and currently have 136k miles on it. The fuel mileage wasn't impressive but minor mods have brought it closer to 20 mpg when empty. I think I still have pictures of both the snapped tie rod and when it was wore out. Luckily I wasn't going fast when the snap happened, but the sand shouldn't have torqued the tie rod so hard to snap it when backing out of the drive way.

Most owners of multiple model year Dodge ram 2500/3500 4x4 pickups have or will encounter front cv driveshaft failures, u-joint failures or hanger bearing failures. This appears to be a very common problem that Dodge is completely ignoring and not covering under warranty as the part failures typically occur shortly after the initial 36 month warranty is expired. This is a serious safety issue which can result in loss of steering control and even a crash. These verhicles are purchased and used as heavy duty hauling rigs and many have diesel engines allowing the carrying or pulling of large, heavy trailers. Symptoms may start with a creaking in the front axle area and include steering wheel chop upon return to center, which is another safety issue. The repair is replacement of the parts that were installed at the factory which are of known poor quality. U-joints specifically should contain a zerk fitting which would allow regular lubrication at maintenance intervals, whereas the factory installed u-joints are sealed and not greasable, which forces them to wear significantly and quickly, thus allowing the parts to fail. Every Dodge dealer within 100-miles of my location is aware of the problem and states it is a common problem and not covered under the factory warranty. Many of which agree that the factory installed original parts are of poor quality and the replacement parts available from the manufacturer are of the same quality, necessitating replacement of the parts with aftermarket parts of much higher quality. On my particular vehicle I have not yet replaced the parts due to dealer scheduling availability but will be in the near future.
