1 Transfer Case problem of the 2007 Dodge Ram 3500

Failure Date: 04/03/2019

My truck shifted itself in 4wd low while going 75 mph down the interstate which destroyed my transfer case and transmission and caused my drive shaft to come loose which I feel is a very dangerous defect as it could have rolled my truck. I have found others that have had this happen apparently because of a electronic transfer case motor reading the wrong signal and shifting into low range whether the truck is moving or even running. It's something that shouldn't happen especially with a manual 4wd shifter.

3 Transfer Case problem of the 2009 Dodge Ram 3500

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Two issues: 1: knocking sound when turning at parking lot speeds. I've replaced bushings, linkages, ball joints, and nothing helped. I replaced wheel hub assemblies and the knocking is reduced, but not fixed. Shop owners that drive the same truck say they've spent thousands of dollars on their own vehicles and can't pinpoint the front end noises either. 2:vibration under the vehicle, from the transfer case, through the drive shaft, to the rear differential. Diesel shop says it's a common issue for the seals to get worn out due to imbalanced drive shaft. However, the drive shaft didn't lose any weights and was fine for the fist 90,000 miles. This is a very common issue with Dodge adam 2500 and 3500, according to the shop. At first I thought it was the tires, so I had them replaced and kept going to different shops, thinking that some may be better at balancing than others. There's a definite vibration between 45-55 mph and then it's really bad at 69-75+ mph. It's been getting worse for months and after replacing worn out seal on transfer case, it still isn't proper, but somewhat better. Shop said it's temporary and partial fix until I get the driveshaft balanced, but it has to be sent off for balancing and could take 3-4 days. I can't be without my truck for 3 days. I drove a Ford for 300,000 miles with no issues in the steering nor in the drivetrain. I drove a chevy for 200,000 miles with zero issues that this Dodge Ram 3500 has.

5 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 Dodge Ram 3500

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

My driver was traveling at 80 mph in cruise control when he started to notice a vibration from the truck that was shaking the mirrors. He took the vehicle out of cruise control and started to decelerate. At approximately 70 mph a large bang was heard from beneath the vehicle and the front end of the truck was lifted off of the pavement. This caused the vehicle to be turned slightly sideways when it came back down into contact with the pavement while traveling at 70 mph! thankfully my driver was able to correct the vehicle straight but when he pushed on the brake pedal it went all the way to the floor. He was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road and eventually bring it to a stop. Parts from the truck had been strewn down the interstate over approximately 200 yds. There was a vehicle traveling behind my driver at the time of the incident but luckily they were far enough behind that they were able to take evasive actions to avoid any flying debris. Thankfully there were no injuries or after incident accidents that occurred though I would attribute this to the alert and responsive driving of both my driver and the driver of the vehicle behind him. Had there been a vehicle directly behind or to the side of him there could have been a major accident possibly resulting in injuries or death. This vehicle was towed to a Dodge ram dealer where we were informed that the front drive shaft was the part that failed. We were informed by dealer personnel that this drive shaft has a joint that is non-serviceable nor easily inspected and that this was the root cause of the failure. Other parts that were effected were the transfer case (the case was broken in two pieces and the internals were blown out), transmission cracked beyond repair, brake lines had been severed, fuel lines had been severed and a hole was punched through the cab bottom into the passenger area.

The vehicle continued to accelerate until after several attempts to apply the brakes. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who stated that the transfer case had detached from the transmission which caused excessive internal damages. In addition, the brake and fuel lines both ruptured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000. The VIN was unavailable.

7 Transfer Case problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 3500

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

I was heading south on I-87 in new york state at 65 mph when a loud explosion sounding like a grenade going off occurred under the floorboards. My passenger and I thought the parts under the truck were going to explode through the floorboards under us. There was a lot of noise of exploding parts. I was barely able to cost to the side of the highway. There was a great deal of oil on the pavement, wires were hanging under the truck, fuel lines and brake lines were ripped, driveshaft damaged. I noticed then that the dashboard 4 wheel drive light had come on, the front hazard lights worked but not the rear. I believe that this was the result of one of two things. . . A factory defect in the transfer case clutch or a computer system glitch that caused the truck to switch into 4 wd at high speed. This was a life threatening situation and I was lucky not to be involved in a serious accident and that the parts did not burst through the bottom of the truck although they dented it.

9 Transfer Case problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 3500

Failure Date: 06/13/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500. At 62,000 miles, an oil change was performed on the vehicle. As a result of the oil change, the front cv joint on the driveshaft failed and damaged the transmission, the transfer case, and the floor board. The bearings lacked the proper amount of grease. The dealer stated that the cross members needed to be able to catch the driveshaft. However, if the contact is driving at a high rate of speed, he could damage the cross members. The dealer also stated that they could and would not service the vehicle because it was driven too long after the component failed and the parts are no longer under warranty. General motors informed the dealer to no longer give the contact any further information due to the propriety issues associated with the defect. The contact stated that when the floor board gave in, it mildly injured his son's foot. Also, the floor board severed several pipe lines. The current mileage is 66,000 and failure mileage was 62,000.
