The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Stratus. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated and remained on. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Stopped at stop sign. Started to make right hand turn, heard pop in the steering column, warning bell went off, airbag light came on and stayed on. Horn stopped working and no cruise control. Took vehicle in for replacement of clockspring today, 7/18/2015, at a cost of $167. 99 for the part and $119. 23 for labor. No airbags is a safety issue. Clockspring failure is known to Dodge/Chrysler and recently Jeep and any vehicle made by Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep that has this failure should have all parts and labor covered by the vehicle manufacturer. We did nothing to cause this and could have done nothing to prevent it. Recalls were done but not for all vehicles. Maybe that needs to change. Bad part for sure!!.
Clock-spring broke when I was backing out of a parking space and turning the steering wheel to the left. Now my air bag light stays on and everything electrical on the steering wheel does not work, this includes the horn, cruise control and the airbag. If this is not a safety issue deserving of a recall then what exactly is?.
Purchased a used 2001 Dodge Stratus and about a week after purchasing it I was backing out of a parking space at the store when I heard a snap/pop sound from the steering column. Air bag light came on and now everytime I turn the wheel I can hear a popping or clicking sound. The irony is that I bought it because my 96 Dodge intrepid is having electrical issues which included the air bag light being on and affecting the electric windows and the heater/air conditioning blower so I have no heater nor defroster. I have always been a Chrysler/Dodge person and have always owned one since I was 18, but I am beginning to think I need to change my loyalty to another make and model.
I was backing out of parking space when I heard a cracking noise when I turned the steering wheel. Then the airbag light came on. Then I noticed the horn did not work. Upon investigation on the internet I am 100% convinced that the clock spring has broken. Further investigation shows there is a recall on Chrysler-Dodge clock springs but only on certain year-models which doesn't make sense. The year or model of the vehicle is irrelevant if the clock spring part in question (the one in the recall) was/is still being installed on vehicles not in the recall like mine a 2003 Dodge Stratus a little investigation on your end will clearly show this to be the case. I'd be willing to bet that my clock spring has the same manufacturing numbers as the recalled clock springs.
I was driving our 2001 Dodge Stratus to park at the movie theater , going only 5 mph maybe less and I went to turn into the parking spot, I heard a click in the steering wheel, a pop, the airbag light came on and the horn does not work at all and the airbag light is still on. Everytime the steering wheel is turned, there is a clicking noise.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Stratus. The contact stated while driving 30 mph the air bag light illuminated and began making a beeping noise. Approximately 60 seconds later the passenger side air bag deployed in the direction of the windshield. The windshield was cracked as well as damaging the dash board. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and an engineer was dispatched to inspect it. Over a month later the contact received a letter from the manufacturer stating they did not feel the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and would offer no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 140,000.

While driving my 2003 Dodge Stratus, I was in the process of turning and I heard a kind of snap and then I felt and heard a grinding in my steering wheel. For about a week whenever I had to make a turn there was this noise list a spring was caught and almost would get caught and I would have to quickly jerk the steering wheel so it wouldn't get stuck and keep me from turning. My airbag light came on and stays on, so it won,t deploy in an accident, my horn doesn't work, and I lost function of my speed control. I was told this is my clockspring. This faulty clockspring was recalled in many Dodge vehicles but has yet to be recalled in my vehicle. See safety recall no. B24 (11/01/2002) for 1998 Dodge vehicles but Dodge continued to use these faulty clocksprings that in fact should have a lifetime warranty.
Upon a slow turn to street, I heard a click and grind sound in steering wheel. . Airbag light and bell came on . Two days later, horn stopped working. Looked up online, and this seems to be widespread across the Dodge line of vehicles. The symptoms fit exactyly to what I found online to be a faulty clockspring in the airbag assembly. I watched someone disassemble a clockspring and found the (tape-type) wires had been bent backwards by the manufacturer before being bent the othe way. ( within two inches of the connection point of the tape wire) upon disassembly , he found the wires to be separated where the bend in the tape was.
Air bag light constantly on, horn and cruise control quit working at the same time. It is my understanding air bag is inoperable at this point and the cause is a broken clockspring in steering wheel. This is a major safety hazard that Dodge should be required to fix at no charge.
I have a Dodge Stratus se sedan, 2001 model. . While turning left into a parking lot the steering wheel almost locked up, then something snapped and broke inside. I regain steering but my airbag light was on and remains on. The other controls on the steering wheel such as cruise control and the horn do not work. . I feel the cruise control not working, the wheel freezing up momentarily until you break the ribbon wire inside the clockspring both are safety hazards. The part that is defective is the clockspring. . It is available from the dealer only at a cost over $129. 00. . It is very cheaply made and is essentially a ribbon wire wrapped around a plastic spool. It is capable of binding up and preventing the steering wheel to turn. One should be inspected and any engineer will agree it is very poorly designed. As much as airbag costs and as much is it is engineered, to have a cheaply made part prevent it's functioning make no sense at all. Dodge and Jeep Chrysler im sure. . Need to take responsibility and recall these vehicles and replace this part with a much better engineered replacement. I almost crashed and now if I do crash I have no airbag and I have no horn to warn other drivers if they're about to crash into me.
I have had my car for a little over 3 years now. First it was the passenger side ball joint. Then a year later it was the ball joint on the driver side plus the control arm. Then it was the brakes and rotors. Then right after that I find out the ball joint I had just replaced on the passenger side needs replaced again! now my oil light comes on at idle after the engine has warmed up. Had the oil changed as always between 2000 and 3000 miles as I should. Had the oil sending unit replaced and still have a oil light on with a full engine of oil. Now my steering column just today made a cracking sound as I was backing up with the wheel turning to the left. Then the airbag light came on and wont go off. Now my steering is stiff. Talked to a mechanic and it is a safety issue.
Airbag self deployed for no apparent reason. I was just simply sitting in car when I notice airbag light came on. Driver airbag has deployed inside airbag light is on, now horn no longer works and feel a clicking sound at each turn.
I bought a 2003 Dodge Stratus on 12/29/07 from junge in center point IA. Today when I turned the wheel I heard a click sound and the airbag light came on and has stayed on. Estimates to have this fixed are $250-$350. All dealers have told me this is a safety hazard and my operator's manual concurs that my airbag may not work. Dodge headquarters will not do anything about this. To me I am unsure why turning a wheel which is necessary should compromise the airbag and safety of the vehicle.
1. I took my car to have the oil changed. 2. Engine light came on & was reset. 3. Fuel pump needs replacing. I only have 57k miles and there is a recall on other models (03v443000). I also have the airbag light on which is identified as the clockspring and has also been recalled in other similar models. Neither of these are shown as recalled on my vehicle.
At 28,000 miles the airbag light came on. The dealer said it was a seat belt retractor. They replaced it. I have had the air bag light come on every few months. They have replaced seat belt components and messed with the connectors. I have had it in 5 times now.

Started car, air bag light came on and passenger airbag deployed for no apparent reason. Broke windshield on passenger side of vehicle. Checked to see if there are any recalls none. Want to file complaint against Chrysler corporation.
: the contact stated that the driver's side seatbelt caught on fire twice and the passenger side air bag deployed. During each incident the air bag light illuminated on the dash. On the first incident the dealership determined there was an electrical short in the airbag module and in the left and right front squids. The seat belt tensioner was determined to be faulty. The dealership replaced the air bag module and the air bag. The seat belt tensioner was repaired. The second incident resulted in injuries to the passenger of the vehicle. The air bag module was determined defective and the driver's side seatbelt retractor was faulty. The dealership replaced the air bag module, the air bag and the seat belt retractor. The seat belt is malfunctioning again. The air bag light is illuminated on the dash of the vehicle.
I had pulled out of my driveway to return to work and when I turned the corner to leave my street I heard a cracking sound from the steering column and the airbag light came on immediately. The air bag light is constantly on, the cruise control does not work and the horn does not work either the vehicle was never involved in an accident and the vehicle had just over 35,500 miles on it.
: the contact stated the air bag light illuminated constantly, the cruise control was inoperable and there was a clicking in the steering column when the wheel is turned left or right. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined a spring in the steering wheel needed to be replaced. Also, the contact stated there was a clicking noise in the front underside of the vehicle that has not yet been inspected by the dealer.
: the contact stated while starting the vehicle the airbag light illuminated without any prior problems. Called Chrysler dealer , who stated problem could be serious, not knowing which sensor malfunctioned. The air bag could deploy while driving without an accident. The mechanic at the dealer showed concern and initially wanted to help, but after finding out that the vehicle had 70,000 miles on it, he indicated there were too many miles past the warranty, and the dealer would not cover it. The contact insisted that it was a safety issue and that mileage had nothing to do with it. However, dealer refused to fix it.
Dodge Stratus 2001, 46000 miles. Car was purchased used from the us government on public sale. Air bag light on, horn does not work, cruise control also affected. This is caused by faulty clockspring part located in steering wheel. I called Dodge after discovering on your web site that there was a recall for 1,500,000 grand caravans that had a same problem caused by their faulty clockspring. Grand caravans also had air bag light on, horn was not working and cruise control was off. I express my concern to Dodge since this is a safety issue and I was hoping they will consider fixing this. I been told to take the car to dealership for diagnostics and after they receive results they will consider fixing this. Diagnostics were performed and result was that the clockspring was broken. Dodge declined my request for fixing the problem. I end up paying for diagnostics to find out what I already knew. I believe that clockspring mechanism for Dodge Stratus is something what should be recalled for this model since it is safety issue, that appeared on other recalled models.
2001 Dodge Stratus - crackling sound in steering wheel, air bag light on , no horn. The vehicle is still operating. There is also another report on your site of the same problem although I have not checked the cruise control yet. Date of prior complaint was 02/07/05.
Steering column makes a popping noise. Airbag light comes on and is in-operative according to Dodge dealer. Cruise control is also in-operative. When asked about the safety of driving vehicle without an operative airbag they replied "if you are so concerned with safety, then park the car and don't drive it. " notice on websites there are re-calls issued for other vehicles with same defect but none on Stratus at this time. Dealer was very rude when notified of problem and charged $60 to verify the problem, when I informed them what it was to begin with.
The air bag light flashed for a sec then it went off ripping my hand off the stering wheel I had my family in the car . It was loud and my arm had plastic in it .
