Car was leaking power steering fluid so we kept on adding more until we could save enough money to get the problem fixed(around $350. 00, no small fee for a working family!)then, the smoking got worse until one day it just caught on fire! I couldn't put it out with an extinguisher, the fire department had to put it out and now the car is totaled! can we still get a recall?.

On December 30, 2006 at 6:10 a. M. (pst) our vehicle (1999 Dodge Stratus, caught fire and burned significantly. My wife left home for work around 5:18 a. M. And arrived around 6:00 a. M. Shortly afterwards a CO-worker came in and said there was a vehicle on fire in the parking lot. After describing the vehicle and its location my wife realized that it was her vehicle her CO-worker was talking about. She went downstairs to find the santa barbara fire department on scene attempting to extinguish the blaze. She notified me of the events and I immediately went to her job. Upon my arrival I spoke with the fire captain (name unknown) and he informed me that it took them close to 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze first using water, then utilizing foam. He was not able to determine the cause of the fire. We filed a claim with our automobile insurance provider, interinsurance exchange of the automobile club, and they sent an investigator out to inspect the vehicle. This individual reports the vehicle as a total loss. I forgot to mention that when I contacted our insurance provider to file a claim I was asked if there were any outstanding recalls on our vehicle and I informed them that there were none. However, on Saturday, January 6, 2007 we received a safety recall notice (e23 - high pressure power steering hose) which reads "the high pressure power steering hose on your vehicle may crack and develop a power steering fluid leak. Power steering fluid leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in an underhood fire. " I have called daimlerchrysler (888-327-4236) and left a voice message informing them of this incident and our receipt of their safety recall notice and them to return my call. I have also notified my insurance provider of this safety recall notice. Please contact me to discuss this issue further.

Regarding recall notice on a 1999 Dodge Stratus high pressure power steering hose* the consumers vehicle caught on fire before the recall notice was received.
When I first purchased my vehicle, everything was normal as can be. I mean it had minor problems but were quickly fixed. After about 5 in a half months of having the car, I noticed it started having a burning smell to it after cranking up and after driving it for a while, a small amount of smoke would appear. At first I thought nothing of it, but then it ran hot one day. So I had the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic. He concluded that it could be two things. One is that the smell was coming from the engine area but told me don't be alarmed because it may just be oil dripping on the engine in which when the engine is heated, could cause the smell and smoke, or two I needed my power steering hose looked at. So hearing it from someone of his status I went along with it. That is until a couple of days later while I was on my way home from playing basketball, I noticed smoke coming from under the, but this time it was dark black smoke and it was coming from all around the front of the car. So I immediately tried to pull over to the side of the road (note:I was on a main street with heavy traffic), but when I tried the steering wheel would move/turn at all. Then suddenly before I could get out of the car, it just burst into flames. I struggled the car to the side of the road and jumped out until it rolled into a complete stop on the side of a police station. My car is totaled out. And I have been without one for bout 4 months now. Something needs to be done. Daimler Chrysler had it picked up to determined the cause(2 months ago), and brought it back, but I am yet to hear anything else regarding my claim.
