The fuel filler neck on a 2000 Dodge
stratus broke away from the body. It was noticed while refueling and the gas was spilling onto the ground instead of going into the tank. That was in November and the car has not been fixed yet because the part has been backordered. I am not complaining because of the inconvenience of not having a car for almost three months, but rather because if the part has been backordered for months then this appears to be a common problem, and since it"s related to the fuel system, a dangerous one.

Fuel filler tube and gas tank connection. Fuel filler tube rubs on bottom under carriage above the rear axel causing a hole in the flexible tube causing a hole which we ordered last August and still is back ordered. This also caused the gas tank where the tube enters also to fail because of the constant pressure above the axel.

My wife was driving our children to school in the morning. Just a few blocks from home, the engine light went on. Then a lady in another vehicle suggests to my wife that her vehicle may be overheating as little smoke was coming from under the hood. My wife called for a tow truck, but the vehicle caught fire and was totaled.
Dealership found a leak during my inspection. Need to make an appointment for repairs. Decided to research this problem since my father-in-law had the same problem with his Stratus. I found many problems listed by others, which led to this report being filed. Something needs to be done since this seems to be a defect on these vehecles.

Fuel gauge failed. Yh.
When the fuel level reaches the half tank level the gauge acts as if it has an electrical short and indicates empty. The fuel gauge bottoms out and the low fuel indicator turns on. When the gas tank is full the gauge will sometimes indicate only 3/4.
