The consumer stated the wheel bearings on both sides had gone out on the vehicle four times. The vehicle started to make a loud noise on the highway. After having the vehicle towed, the wheel bearings on both sides failed again. The manufacturer offered no help.
While driving there was a loud boom and the front left tire was rubbing. Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealership, who indicated that the right front coil spring broke. The spring was replaced. However, within 6,000 miles the failure recurred, the left front spring broke. The dealership was unable to replace the spring because the manufacturer discontinued manufacturing the part. The steering knuckle was removed and replaced due to the wheel bearing race spinning in the knuckles which caused abnormal wear of the knuckle. The knuckle and the bearing were replaced.
While driving at any speed there was a loud noise coming from the driver's side rear wheel. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the consumer was informed that wheel bearing was defective.

Dash was replaced, but it was installed improperly. Also, air conditioning system has leak, and will be replaced next spring. Vehicle has had the following repairs or replacements: wheel bearings, brakes, tie rods, dashboard, intake manifold, passenger rear struts, left front dome lamp switch, left front speakers, and oygen sensor.
Front wheel bearings failed at about 40,000 miles. One side was completely failed, other side was in need of replacement. I noticed sudden grinding noise and checked for cause. Had bearings replaced. Could have been worse if I had not recognized the problem. No warning as to failure. Wheel bearings should last more than 40,000 and should not fail suddenly.
Right front wheel bearing locked up prematurely causing car to pull violently to the right. This could have caused and accident had there been a car to the right. I believe Ford should have a recall due to others having wheel bearing problems prematurely.
Consumer took vehicle to dealership/mechanic for a "roaring" noise coming from front end. This noise would become louder with speed. Dealer stated that problem was with bearings of vehicle. Please provide any additional information.
Three replacements of front wheel bearing, and one replacement of right rear bearing, all replacements made from two different dealers. Feel free to provide any further information.
While driving there was a continuous rubbing noise coming from the tires. Took vehicle to dealer and they said front tires needed replacement. Consumer replaced two front tires. 2 months later, noise continued. Consumer put all new tires, and noise continued, and got louder and louder. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was front wheel bearings.
I believe all 1997 Ford Contours should be recalled, over the past 3 years I have replaced the clutch, waterpump, blower motor, both lower control arms, bushings, sway bars, wheel bearings, front & rear brakes and rotors(both twice!!!!), axle, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, egr valve, coil springs, battery, balljoints, door latch, almost all of the full front suspension!!!! there are more parts that I had replaced but I can't remember all the names of the parts there are too many!! my check engine light will not turn off, seat belt light will not turn off, short in the drivers side power window, the engine will (rev) up by itself when it's in gear and when it's not, short in the drivers side power seats, water leakage in the trunk, a/c leaks onto the passenger side floor, all doors squeak no matter what you do, carpet is falling out, horn will not work most of the time, same for the cruise control, windshield wiper sprayer does not work, knocking noise coming from the engine, ended up in very bad debt because of this and no one will take it, I still owe money on the piece of crap. Contacted Ford motor at one time regarding all the parts I replaced after the first year I had it, they say it's not there problem. Dealership who sold it to me says it was just fine, bull crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that those are too many items for a 1997 to go wrong on.
Though this car is only slightly over 3 years old, I have had 5 recalls on it, had to replace front wheel bearings ($400), console clock light has burned out, had to replace windshield due to extensive crack caused by small stone chip, etc. Current cam timing job estimated at $1,000. I've never had this much trouble with a vehicle in my life. Asked Ford's to cover 1/2 of cost; was referred to dealer, who "declined. " is there anything else I can do about this lemon??.
