Fuses And Circuit Breaker Problems of Ford Contour - part 1

Well I had the worst experience ever in my life since I bought this car. I had this car repaired so many time I cant start to name off dates. I do know less than 6 months after I bought this car I drove to the beach less than 30 minutes always and it cut off. It started back up, but cut off 4 time before I got home. Next day I had to take it to the dealer to repair it. Since I had this car it has been nothing but a burden. I had to replace the ball joint once before, and as I write this letter it is being done again for a 2nd time. My heat and air stop working. Heat only works on high, and my defrost take for ever to clear my windows. My door just wont stay closed it pops open while driving. On my passengers side on the floor. It gets soaked with rain everything. If its rainy and im driving my car makes a loud scratching noise. My brakes have to be changed every 3-4 months. Shocks gave out less than a year after buying my car. My engine light wont go off. I took my car to over 3 Ford dealers and many shops, and no can say why the light keep popping on. So today I dropped my car off to the shop to have brakes,door,engine light, ball joints and to see why the over drive off light keep blinking while im driving. This is the worst car ever made by Ford. I know its nothing on my behalf why this car is so horrible because is know 4 other people who have or had the same problems as me. They were Smart enough to get rid of this piece of ¿!@#$%, I just cant afford it. Well I know this summer if I do have the pleasure and jungian this car, im going to push it off a bridge myself, and never ever by a Ford again. I think Ford should be assumed for putting out such a bad model. How dare u try and make a quick buck instead of building a reliable car for families.

I purchased my vehicle at 88,000 miles from the federal government at an auction. The fed gov. Is required to meet manufacturer standards on maintenance. However, the vehicle has had major electrical problems which numerous mechanics can not fix. There is a voltage drain, which makes fuses blow. The cruise control, blinkers, and ac don't work, and it is impossible to shift out of park without using a manual override.

1) a/c blower shut off and upon investigation a 60 amp fuse broke under the fuse box in the front of the car under the engine hood were damaged. And further inspection showed several open wires coming from the battery and one comming from the fuse box which is believed to have caused the fuse to break. 2) notified by 2 different auto-electrical repair shops they had seen simular damage and informed me off the costs of a replacement wiring harness and labor which ranged from $3800 - $4400. Checking other various web sites showed a lot more people with the same problems which ranged from fires to having to drive with broken fuses or having to pay high amounts to replace it. 3) doing preventative maintentence by cleaning area and spraying a high base in the area to prevent further damage caused by exposed wires to the elements on a weekly bases till I can afford such a large repair and not replacing a fuse which controls my blower and abs.

While driving about 65 mph electrical system did not work. It not show any information, and there were no lights. Consumer had to restart engine to make it works again. Please provide more information.

Turn signal/brake lamps burn out very frequently (once every month or two). In mid-October, the turn signal burned out, and changing the bulb did not remedy the problem. Car was taken to the dealer to be repaired. Dealer said that part of the fitting that the tail lamp plugs into had melted, thus shorting out the circuit and resulting in failure of the signal.

Rear of fuse box overheated, and one of the plugs melted. Consumer has contacted Ford, and they have refused to look at it because it was out of warranty. Please provide any further information.

The short caused the dashboard lighting and backlights not to function.

Whenever starting vehicle or even driving electrical system would start acting up. Windshield wipers would go on by themselves, have not been turned on. Lights, interior & exterior, would go out. Ignition will not start vehicle sometimes. Also, would hear a clicking noise. Did not have a battery problems. Heater blower failed to work. No recalls on vehicle for electrical problems.

Whenever I turn on the heater, a/c, defrost, or fan my abs light turns on and my brakes are spongy. I have lost all brakes on two occasions when the abs light came on. When my car sits for a weekend, the battery dies. Installed a new battery, still dies. Ford cannot find a cause for either problem. I have taken my car in to have the wiring harness changed for the lights, those went out. Also, my a/c fuse had caught fire, whole fuse box and blower was replaced.

Fusebox: bought car in July 1999, had to have three recalls fixed, one of them was on the air bag sensor, we went and had one of the recalls corrected, the next week we were scheduled to have the remaining two finish, on Wednesday of that week the air conditioner stopped working while we were driving home from work, we had the mechanic check it that Friday when they fixed the air bag sensor, the mechanic said the fuse box was broken and needed to be replaced, he replaced the fuse box (free of charge) and we went on our way, then on 8/14/2000 as we were again driving home from work on the expressway at about 55 the air conditioner died again, we read through the car manual and found the correct fuses to the blower motor and a/c, we changed those fuses, that didn't fix the problem, we then changed the relays, (which were very hard to get replacements for), that didn' t fix it either, finally we took it to a Ford dealer and had them chack it, they said there was a fuse in the front (which the owners manual said should only be changed by an authorized Ford mechanic) that had blown and when it did it fused the fuse to the connector and that the entire fuse box would have to be replaced, this time at a cost of over $400. 00 tires: we have just had to replace two firestone firehawk gta p205/60r15 90t m+s tires because the tread was coming away from the sidewall at the seem, it was so bad there were small flaps of the tread that stuck straight out like someone had peel a banana. ( dot number: tire size: p205/60r15 ).

While driving tail lights and instrument panel lights went out. Dealer was notified about the problem. The problem was corrected at owner's expense. Problem due to water condensation in the fuse box.

The fuse to turn signals continue to blow, and there is no warning until attemped to use the signal. Dealer has been contacted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer in may 2000 for shift indicator problem recall. The vehicle was returned to the dealer again several times because the problem continued and approximnately 12 fuses blew over all.

It seems like when one thing started to short on my Contour everything started to go. . . First the lights started going on and off then . . The a/c started shorting then it completely froze causing timing to jump and noew . . I'm told the car needs new computer . . It dies in middle of road the sensors are bad . . . Please help me regarding this matter . .

While driving; radio & interior lights will shut off when blinker, door & or other electronic component used or for no reason at all. Also have had problems w/ alarm system. Dealer unable to locate sorce of problem, changed radio twice, alarm & fuse box once.

Battery not able to hold the current. Also, headlights and interior lights are not working.

60 amp mega fuse blew, this caused anti lock failure, light and ventilation/heater/defroster failure. Nlm.

Vehicle was taken in for recall # 99 v 103 000 for the head lights. Headlights and wiring harness were replaced. A month later , headlights and tail lights and all dash lights went out. Please provide any further information.

The fuse keeps blowing out. This causes the air conditioner not work. Took to dealer. Vehicle failed to start & needed a jump. Informed battery was needed.

Pe98063, the headlights and tail lights malfuctioned, which caused the lights to go on and off. This may cause visual difficulty, and may result in an accident. Dealer replaced headlights, but problem is reoccurring. Eadelr did determine an "electrical problem". Please provide further information.

Consumer experienced a series of electrical problems which resulted in a fire. All lights inside and outside went out except the headlamps. Also, fuses blew out too often and smoke came from the turn signal. Mechanic replaced the turn signal and noticed that all other wires in the steering column were damaged. Dealership insisted that if there was no extnded warranty they would not repair.

Consumer was driving vehicle on the highway when the instrument and tail lights went out. Learned that the switch was burnt out and needed to replace the electrical harness & switch.

Headlights and dashlights did not work when switch was turned on. Dealer contacted, and stated the headlight switch was burnt out, wires and the connector were all burnt out also, vehcile should not be driven due to a fire hazard.

Passenger's side rear turn signal has an electrical short in wiring that causes bulbs to constantly be replaced. Dealer has yet to be contacted. Please provide further details.

Tail lights and interior dash lights went out without warning. This was due to light switch harness connectors melting, shorting out the wires.

Fuse box can be opened and the fuses can not be reached. Dealer states that's the way it was installed.

I have previously had problems with this vehicle and have taken it more than eight different times to be service and problem still has not been resolved even after having engine replaced I am having some of the same problems. Car has been serviced on a regular basis and still it has problems. E . .

The car has less than 5,000 miles . The cigarette lighter/accessory outlet developed a short with fuse blowout . The interior lever to the left of the driver's seat does not function to open the outside lid covering the gas cap . The car is in almost new condition with less than 5,000 miles since 1996 . Car is also in for mandatory recall servicing due to notice from Ford . Have there been other complaints about shorting in the cigarette lighter/accessory outlet system ? have there been other complaints about the interior gas cap lid lever not functioning ? I am being charged for the repair of these items . I wonder whether there was a basic design deficiency that led to such malfunctioning after less than 5,000 miles .

The wiring of the main fuse panel crystalizes due to excessive heat from the engine compartment which causes a breakage in the wiring and the wiring to overheat. This has manifested itself by causing air conditioner blower motor not to work. The wiring gets extremely hot when this happens. I know of other Contours that have experienced this same problem.

I am very displeased with the Ford Contour. About 2 month after I purchased my car I had to have the brake pads replaced, then replaced again after that. I've had several recalls on the car, not to mention all the other headaches I've dealt with. I'm really considering not to ever buy another Ford car, this has been the worst car I've ever owned.
