Ignition Switch Problems of Ford Contour

The contact owns a 1999 Ford Contour. The vehicle stalls and makes a lot of noise during acceleration. The overhead lights and other interior lighting will not dim when the vehicle is turned off. The contact must remove the bulbs to dim the lights. When the key is inserted in the ignition, the ignition switch locks up. A mechanic stated that the front sway bar was leaking and the brakes, rotors, and struts were corroded and needed to be replaced. The purchase date and powertrain were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.

Starter engaged with no keys in ignition wire harness melt down from battery. Starter started to smoke. Mechanic me informed that Contour has a recall but dealer(Ford) has not this car.

Consumer is able to take the key out of the ignition switch when the vehicle is not in park. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Consumer was able to rotate the ignition key to the locked position and remove the key while driving and in gear. The cause had not been determined. Consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.

Ignition fails to completely shut vehicle off when turned to off position, and the key is removed. Consumer stated that it also takes excessive effort to insert or remove key from ignition. Dealership has examined vehicle, and was going to replace ignition.

Consumer is able to pull key out of ignition in any gear.

Vehicle was parked and wouldn't start. Ignition switch damaged key. Dealership was aware of problem.

Nhtsa recall 99 v 060 000/manufacturer's recall 99s06, fmvss 114: ignition switch is able to turn while driving. Dealer was contacted,and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under recall due to VIN. Feel free to provide any further information.

Driver's side seat belt locked up, had to untwist belt to use it. Also, rear window fell out, nothing had hit it/ignition key switch would rattle when inserting key & taking it out, and sun roof lock was not working. Sunroof could not be opened or closed . Taking vehicle to dealer to check problems.

Whenever ignition is turned off, it would lock up. Key would still be in ignition switch. Had turned to lock position while nothing was in use at the time. Been to dealer 4 or 5 times for problem, but mechanic could not locate cause of problem.

The ignition switch is in an operating condition to enable the ignition key to be pulled from the ignition switch with the engine still running. Spoke to capistrano Ford, stated car used and cost of repair: $200. 00.

Experienced intermittent failure of ignition switch, upon turning key, engine won't start, instead windshield wipers movedwithout engaging wiper switch.

Consumer took this vehicle in to be repaired under the recall 99s14 for an ignition switch, the vehicle was repaired, but now theirs is a problem with front end vibrating very hard. The dealer has been contacted.

Intermittently ignition switch malfunctioned, and the vehicle would not start. Dealer has replaced ignition switch, however, problem has reoccurred.

The driver was able to remove the key from the ignition switch. The mechanic replaced the ignition cylinder. Please provide further details.
