Steering Problems of Ford Contour

The contact owns a 1998 Ford Contour. While driving approximately 40 mph on a wet road, the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coil springs were damaged. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the failure recurred every time the road was wet. The approximate failure mileage was 137,000.

Corrosion under the car (police inceptor ). Car was purchase from a local dealer in bamberg, SC that sell many crown victorias. He indicated my car came from up north, pennsylvania.

I was never notified of any recalls. I have had to pay out of pocket expenses lost control of vehicle replaced starter and brakes several times feels like suspension is falling apart and never notified I have small and older children shameful. These events starting taking place when I purchased the vehicle in 1999 arm control 3 times replaced I was lied to by Ford and said I must of hit a bump bump my bump 3 times almost dead.

My 1998 Ford Contour 4-door sedan recently experienced a devastating failure. While my daughter was driving through a parking lot at low speed, a sub-frame assembly under the dash fell down on her feet. The assembly is held in place with two bolts which had come loose. As a result of this, the steering linkage was allowed to disconnect, permitting the steering wheel to spin freely. Had this happened on the highway she would have completely loss control, and because the frame fell on her feet, she probably couldn't have applied the brake. No steering and no brake! I think this is a potentially fatal design defect. Of course, the dealer and Ford apologized but refused to correct the problem because the car is out of warranty.

While driving at any given speed and making a turn to left, car doesn't turn left. Then, when turning wheel slightly more, vehicle will make a sharp turn to left, causing vehicle to get out of the intended lane towards various objects, which could result in a crash if hitting left wall of freeway. To prevent a crash, consumer must "force" wheel to right because it will not correct itself if just letting go. This defect occurs every time consumer turns vehicle to left, and is especially bad during wet conditions. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

When consumer steered to the left vehicle pulled more than intended. Dealer inspected the vehicle & found nothing wrong. The steering problem is caused by bad front end alignment. The transmission failed. Broken motor mount was found. The heater failed too.

On several occasions, when turning, the steering wheel started to shimmy, and makes a yawning sound, possibly related to the steering and or suspension failure.

Consumer experienced steering problem at 61000. Also, had to change tires and brakes.

Steering problem has cost consumer alot of money. Also, needs to replace the tires.

While driving vehicle about 10 mph when rainning, consumer drove over a pot of water. He lost control of steering wheel and the steering locked up to one side, making it hard to drive.

The steering locks temporarily during rainy weather and vehicle hits a puddle.

During rainy weather, the steering becomes locked temporarily whenever a puddle is hit.

Steering locks every time it rains and the vehicle runs through a puddle.

Steering uneven and seems to give when turning. Nlm.

The temperature gauge in the instrument panel continually reads above the red zone. The car has been checked and is not overheating. There has been a technical report filed on this and it is a known problem. This could be dangerous if the vehicle was to overheat because the driver would not be able to know.

When traveling at any speed and upon hitting water in the road surface steering wheel lock up and freeze, causing poor steering control. Also, having problems with vehicle stalling when traveling at any speed. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has replaced parts, but problem still occurs. Please provide any further details.

Vehicle experiences continued difficultly in steering.

The steering wheel became stuck in one direction. Consumer had to use excessive force to get steering back to the center.

Vehicle experienced complete engine wiring harness failure at 74000 miles.
