I received a recall on my Ford f-150 pickup, replace fuel tank straps. I called and made a appointment. When I got to the dealership, they took my truck to the service department. They informed me , they didn't have the parts to repair it. It was unsafe to drive, but wanted me to sign a waver, which would hold me accountable, if the straps broke , and caused an accident. They wanted me to drive the truck home!! I had to leave the truck at the dealership. I wasn't going to drive a dangerous truck home? this is Friday, they won't have the parts until Tuesday to fix it. What a pain!!! they wouldn't even give me a rental to drive, they had to drive me home!!.

I have an 1997 Ford f150 that I had to replace the gas tank and both straps that secured the tank to the vehicle. The straps wore away at the gas tank which in turn caused a fuel leak in the tank itself.

1999, Ford f-150 gas strap failure. Tuesday September 14, 2010 while driving on interstate 94 I could hear a clinking noise beneath the body of the truck. When I pulled over and looked under the truck, one of the support straps for the gas tank was broken and hanging below the vehicle. This strap failed without any known extraordinary cause such as a collision, or any other such incident.
Hi, the part failure is a fuel tank crack that occurs in the mid90's to early 2000s Ford vans. This design problem has been admitted to by Ford, and is addressed on a very limited list of certain models and years under a recall notice 01v114000. However, this tank crack occurs on other non listed VIN numbers as well, such as mine. This is the problem, the documented and covered recall group VIN numbers precede mine and occur subsequent to mine, but skip several vins inbetween. My cracked and leaking fuel tank, and the resulting gasoline leakage, occur as a result of the tank design, which design Ford has revisited five times now. So, there is a gasoline leak that results from metal fatigue, as the long "hotdog" shaped fuel tank flexes and twists, in Ford's words, with the frame, and fails where it rubs straps or crossmembers. I have attempted to get a replacement tank from Ford, but all are spoken for and backordered as they are being supplied to the dealers for the vehicles included in the current list of defective vehicles. So, no tanks are available to people like me, who have the problem, but are not included in Ford's existing recall list. I have contacted Ford for resolution, Ford case 599552380, for sourcing a tank at least for now. Ford will still not admit to ownership of financial responsibility for this particular tank--yet. I have also filed a complaint with dot, case #290654, to have the recall group expanded to cover all of us who need this help. As an aside, the local Ford dealer has refused to give me anything I need or supply me any support since we come to this impass and situation. They do also admit however, to being unable to assist me because of the lengthy backlog of people needing replacement tanks and the unavailability of these tanks.
Driving down the i94 freeway in michigan with my wife, 2 children, 7 and 5,going about 70 mph and heard a noise like a muffler dragging or something. Immediately pulled over and found my gas tank dragging under the truck. Front strap rusted and broke off and tank was being pushed forward, almost grinding all the way through! the tank was being held up by the plastic rear strap holder and the gas filler tube. The back strap was also rusted through! had to jack up the tank with bottle jack and pieces of 2x4 found along the freeway. Waited for father in law to bring ratchet straps to lift up very heavy full tank while lying on my back on the freeway. My family was terrified!.
