This is the exact same situation others have experienced on NHTSA recall campaign number 01v114000 relating to cracks/leaks to the 'mid ship' style fuel tank. My van is a 1997 E-150 conversion van. Unfortunately, I am in the same situation as many others in the fact that Ford motor company does not acknowledge my particular VIN number is affected in this recall. There have been a number of other incidents reported with vehicles mysteriously catching on fire for unknown reasons. Very disturbing that a manufacturer would not agree to replace a leaking/damaged fuel tank.

After filing up gas tank and parking vehicle - noticed gas leaking from gas tank - had a Ford mechanic look at it and he said it looked like similar problem he had seen with other Ford E-150s that had crack in 35 gallon mid-ship fuel tank where it [tank] contacts the frame cross member - he told me to look it up on line. . . I did and I called Ford customer support - they said this recall applied to E-150s built at lorainne plaint between April 1996 and November 2000. . . They looked up my VIN and said it was built in November 1999 at the loraine plaint and should be on list but was not -- wrote letter to Ford and NHTSA - no response from Ford.
The contact owns a 1997 Ford E-150. While placing fuel into the vehicle, the contact noticed a huge puddle underneath the vehicle. He looked underneath the vehicle and noticed a crack on the fuel tank. The manufacturer stated that his VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 01v114000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). The contact believes that his vehicle should be included in the recall since the failures are identical. The failure mileage was 89,000 and current mileage was 94,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford E-150 econoline. Whenever the contact fills the fuel tank, gasoline would spill out of the tank and onto the ground. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. The vehicle has not been inspected and the cause of the failure has not been determined. 1999 Ford e150 wagon (conversion van - eclipse conversions of in) has a cracked fuel tank. Fuel tank is 35 gallon, mid ship. Nhsta recall 01v114000/Ford recall 01s14 should apply, however when discussed with Ford they said it did not apply. They would only look at information on their website. When I asked them to look at Ford recall 01s14 and tell me why it did not apply, they would not look at the recall. This is a dangerous situation, but I need the wagon to drive.
Gas spilled out of the original fuel tank while filling up on flat ground. Dealer said the tank had rubbed on a cross member and had a hole in the tank.
I had a fuel tank leak on my Ford e150 conversion van in 2001. The van had 85000 miles on it. Had the tank replaced at a dealer; originally he ordered the wrong tank, thinking I had the smaller one, but I have the 35 gal. Midship tank listed in 01v114000. They replace the tank about the time this recall was issued. Then, 85000 miles later, I have the same leak, exact same problem. I have visited two dealerships, even spoken to the original service manager who handled the repair in 2001; all deny that the recall applies to this vehicle. I called Ford at the number listed in 01v11400; they deny that I have this fuel tank, even though they installed it specifically, although obviously not according to the recall instructions. I figure because it was a conversion van they may not think it was the "original equipment". I have now had this problem twice, and paid for it the first time. I want them to reimburse me for the original repair under this recall, and then to perform the recall repair correctly, since obviously that wasn't done. I'm sure this fuel tank leak has cost me a lot in evaporated gasoline too, particularly at today's prices.
1997 Ford econoline 150 universal conversion van. Gas tank rotted out at filler tube. Gas runs out on ground while filling. Gas tank had to be replaced.
1997 Ford econoline 150 universal conversion van. Gas leaks at gas tank when filling up. The main filler tube ( hose) seems to be leaking. Gas runs out all over the ground. Gas tank must be dropped to replace hose.
1999 Ford e150 conversion van 1fdre14w4xha88264 gas tank is leaking. There is an existing recall for 1996-2000 model years built at the lorain assembly plant, however, it is listed against e150 wagons, not vans. I checked my VIN against the recall and it was not listed. According to Ford customer service, wagons come with seats and vans do not. Since my vehicle went directly from the plant to an aftermarket conversion company, I doubt it had seats. But, it certainly wasn't manufactured as a cargo van. I believe my van should have been included in the recall but may have been omitted because it was ordered without seats. Regardless, it now has a leak from the gas tank. The leak is coming from somewhere on top of the tank that I can't see. I inspected the fuel filler neck and saw nothing wrong. There is nothing wrong with the bottom or sides as far as I can see. Even if my vehicle isn't included in the recall, it still has an apparent safety defect. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened to the van. No wrecks, just normal driving conditions.
I took my 1997 Ford e150 conversion van in for service, with the complaint of the strong smell of gasoline, which seems to be worse after I fill it up. The technician stated in his report that the top of the tank was wet with gasoline and he suspects that it is cracked. He also told me a search came up with a Ford recall for 1997 e150 vans with this issue. I contacted my Ford dealer and was told there is no such recall for my van. I looked on your web site and found recall #01v114000, which seems to pertain to my van. I am afraid to drive the van, with gas leaking and the dealer told me the tank would be $400 + labor to repair. What now? thank you for your help sincerely, brian holgate.

Ford's recall number is 01s14. My e150 fills the requirements of "near the gross vehicle weight with . . . Rough road. . . The 35 gallon mid-ship fuel tank . . . Crack . . . " Ford tells me that my VIN is outside the range of covered vans. The recall covers 1997 through 2001 models. I see no way that Ford would know which vans are used in the above mentioned manner. This problem appeared from the beginning of my ownership. Any filling of more than 3/4 tank, resulted in strong gasoline smell and leakage. This was a very serious problem. Even though I tried to not fill past 3/4, sometimes I would exceed that. Explosion and fire were constant threats. My Ford dealer tells me that it certainly looks like my van should be included. I agree. I have paid for the replacement of the fuel tank. The below incident date is approximate. I bought the van in December 2001.
Discovered ruptured fuel tank after being parked overnight.
Gas tank corrosion cause leak of fuel and fumes into passenger space. Although found under the mileage warranty limits, regular warranty expired 3 months earlier. After discussion with Ford and dealer, they replaced tank under "extended warranty" but charged us for labor costs. Steering problem : have had steering problems with this van since it was first purchased. Have had multiple visits to dealer to discuss problem of alignment (van constantly pulls to the right) yet dealer can find no problem and blames it on "the crown of the road". However, even in left handed lane (crown left) van still pulls to right. Even had to replace orginial tires due to wear pattern. In October 2000, front rt tie rod assembly broke, repaired by dealer, (free alignment) but van still pulls to the right.

Consumer noticed a fuel puddle under vehicle while parked in drive way. Vehicle was serviced by dealership, and technician noticed fuel tank with cracks in two places. Also, filler was cracked.
The truck's gas tank developed cracks and leaked gas. There's was a recall # 01v114000 for fuel tank cracks, but the vehicle identification number was outside the remedy scope.
The consumer stated that gas tank was installed without any insulation between the gas tank and frame, so metal was rubbing metal which caused a fuel leak. Consumer's big problem was that Ford was aware of the failure and didn't notify him or others like him.
