1 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Exhaust odors enter vehicle cabin after heavier acceleration. It is more prevalent when air conditioning it turned on. This odor can vary in intensity from mild to so overwhelming that you cough, gag, eyes water and sinuses will drain. It irritates my throat. I drive this vehicle a lot each day and while at first I thought the smell was entering the vehicle from other vehicles exhaust in front of me, I have finally realized it is coming from the vehicle I am driving. Smell intensity seems related to how hard the acceleration was. For example, when entering a highway on an acceleration ramp during heavy traffic, the situation could require heavy acceleration to get up to speed. The car gets a very heavy odor of exhaust inside the cabin in this situation with air conditioning on. When this intensity happens you must roll down the windows to clear the smell from the interior. The smell is less intense during easier accelerations. I notice myself feeling drowsy sometimes during the summer months, with air conditioning on, after I have been driving the car for maybe an hour or so. Rolling the windows down seems to make the sensation go away as does getting out of the vehicle. I am concerned carbon monoxide is present with the odor that enters the vehicle interior. I do not notice the smell much during the cooler months when air conditioning is not used. The intensity of the odor, under heavier acceleration, is virtually breathtaking. It is very difficult to breath inside the interior during this kind of intensity. We purchased this used vehicle used in early 2016 with 10,000 miles on it and drive it daily. It has over 30,000 miles now. I have read and researched many comments and complaints about this vehicle and Ford explorers with the same described issue. I have not been able to research a fix.

2 Air Conditioner problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2014

When outdoor temperature drops below freezing as you drive the vehicle the interior windows and windshield will fog up to the point of not being able to see out of them. Defrost mode does not completely clear windshield. Only gives about a quarter of the windshield at bottom to half clearance at best. This has happened four times now and I had no problems until after my dealer did a recall for heater unit efficiency. I have had it to them three times in the last three weeks and they continue to tell me that everything is functioning properly. Their suggestions have been review my manual on proper heater functions, roll down the windows, do not park the car in my garage, carry a towel with me in the car to wipe off windshield and turn on the air conditioning. This is a major safety concern as my view is extremely obstructed and I would appreciate some assistance as Ford is telling me that it is a minor problem. I don't see it as minor but major as clear visibility is a necessity when driving.
