1 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2020

Abs and emergency brake light comes on and says regen brakes disabled. Had it checked and was told hcu is bad. From everything I've read and been told Ford should've issued a recall on this issue.

2 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2020

Traveling on main highway with my 3 grandchildren when the abs light came on and the check brake system light comes on, brakes go almost all of the way to the floor to get the vehicle to stop. Shortly after, the lights went off and the brakes worked fine. This has happened intermittently, which is very dangerous our mechanic said this is something that only a dealership can fix and it is a very expensive repair. There was a recall 19s54 on other Ford vehicles 2006-2010 Ford fusion, Mercury milan, Lincoln zephyr and mkz vehicles for this exact issue. (the valves within the abs hydraulic control units (hcu) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly. ) this recall should apply to the Escape hybrid as well. This is nothing to do with owner maintenance. This is a design default and should be covered at Ford's expense.

6 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2019

When I bought the car, it was over 12 years old and had approximately 137k miles. I experienced recurring brake problems about a month after purchasing the car: on some days, when starting the car the abs failure light and the red brake failure light would remain illuminated and the "check brake system" message would appear. Sometimes restarting the car cleared the errors, but most of the time they would remain the entire day. The following day the failures often cleared up. While these failure modes were active, the brake pedal had some pressure behind it, but braking took longer and strong braking led to wheels locking up. (like in the days before abs) over time, the failure modes persisted longer to the point where over the past two weeks, there was only one period of a half-hour where the car did not exhibit the failure condition. In addition, the "regen brakes disabled" message also started appearing, but that message may be deceptive because the battery status gauge shows a strong charge indication when the brakes are applied. In all cases, the failure modes appeared immediately on startup and persisted while the car was running. In the shop, these diagnostic codes were reported: c1313, c1478, c1480, c1526. The mechanic instructed me to take the car to a Ford dealer because he was not convinced that replacing the master cylinder (an expense exceeding $2000) would fix the problem.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2018

When the vehicle was started, there was an unusual motor-like sound for a second-or-so coming from the front of the vehicle. The abs light and the parking brake light came on even though the parking brake was not engaged. The brake pedal had a spongy feel and the brakes were very ineffective. Applying the brakes caused the right-front corner of the vehicle to dive. Heavy application of the brakes caused the right-front tire to skid. It appeared that only the right-front brakes were working. When the vehicle was turned off, a high-pitched noise continued to come from the engine compartment. After turning the ignition on and off a few times, the high-pitched sound had ceased. After that, a driving test showed that the brakes had returned to working normally. This entire scenario has occurred multiple times.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2017

The abs light and brake light appeared on the instrument panel while driving on a state highway. Check brake system light appeared as a digital read out on the instrument panel. Turned off the engine believing it to be a 'reset' issue. The abs light and brake light did not come on again. Two days later, upon backing up these lights appeared again on the instrument panel. Called local Ford dealership to determine the problem. Dealership performed abs selftest and got code c1313-ao and u2023-a0. The codes indicated that the hcu (hydraulic control unit) required replacement. Dealership quoted $5,900. 00 repair cost to replace hcu sensor. The dealership did not caution us to not drive the car and we remain concerned about safe driving. He said, "the brakes will get mushy and we will eventually losing braking power. " checked Ford website to determine whether a recall for this safety issue had been posted. No recall by Ford noted at this time. A review of online posts indicates that many Escape hybrid owners have encountered the same problem and highway safety is concerning to owners.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2016

I was coming to a stop sign and almost rear ended someone as the abs light and brake lights lit up on my dashboard, along with "service brake system". My foot went right to the floor to stop the truck. This continued to happen till I went to the dealership where I was told this is common and requires a $ 6000 new hydraulic control unit. Also I was told that you still have brakes just néed a lot more pressure. I'm not only one with this complaint. Very dangerous when you lose all brake pressure. This happens more often now and every time I restart the car it goes away and all works well till next time.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

The check brake system light is on and abs light on also. I drove it around the corner and brakes are very spongy and not fully responsive. I do not trust driving with this situation.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. While driving at approximately 55 mph the anti lock brake light and traction control light illuminated on the dashboard. The vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure but he replaced the brakes himself. The lights continued to illuminate so he continued to examine the vehicle. He noticed the sensing ring on the front passenger side of the axle was broken. He repaired the vehicle. While driving at approximately 70 mph the anti lock brake light and traction control light began to illuminate on the dashboard. Upon examination he noticed the sensing ring on the front drivers side of the axle was broken. He again repaired the vehicle himself. The failure has not recurred. The failure mileage was 39,000 and the current mileage was 41,600.

14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

The brakes failed on my 2008 Ford Escape hybrid while traveling at 50mph on rt. 3 in clifton NJ. Vehicle was able to be stopped on the shoulder by shifting in to neutral and putting the brake all the way to the floor, which provided very little stopping power. Both the abs light and brake warning lights came on the dash, in addition to a message that said something along the lines of brakes require service. The car has roughly 7000 miles on it and was purchased in sept. 2007.
