2 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

Driving at 35mph abs light came on then check brakes followed by brake regen disengaged. This created no stopping of vehicle and running through stop light. Fortunately, there were no vehicles coming from other directions. Still no brakes and appears to be a known issue by public and Ford.

3 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2018

Abs light on - brakes work most of the time, but not reliable. Regen light also on. The problem occurs intermittently, almost always shortly after starting the vehicle. On 2 occasions it occurred while driving on the interstate and forced the vehicle to slow to 20mph.

4 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

Brake failure. During normal driving I was coming to an intersection to stop. I applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, brake effectiveness was almost non existent. The abs light and a message indicating 'regen system disabled' came on. Ford has designed a braking system that can simply "disable" itself and leave a person without effective stopping power. I had to veer off the roadway to avoid hitting cars in front of me, resulting in minor damage to my front bumper and undercarriage. This should be a recall due to safety concerns.

5 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

While driving the car I started seeing abs lights pop up on the dash and immediately lost all power of the braking system. I had to slam so hard on the pedal for it to barely come to a stop almost hitting the car in front of me in a shopping center. After taking it to a mechanic I was told the abs control module is bad. After some research, I see that this is a common problem in this generation Ford Escape Hybrids and many other people have had close calls with some getting into accidents due to the faulty abs issue.

6 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

Abs lights came on went and got it checked and its the break system. I was told by the dealership that it was going to be over $5,000 and that even if they fixed it I dont get a warranty for the fixed system and that it could reoccur. This is an issue with this car a lot. Can we please get this issue checked into. $5,000 is a lot of money to fix a car and it not be 100 percent fixed.

7 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2018

Abs light goes on, brake regen goes on causing the vehicle not to stop. Severe safety issue which there is no know recall by Ford for. $5000 dollar fix to replace the hcu. Went to stop at a red light and almost caused an accident.

8 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2017

My problem with this vehicles brakes is similar to other complaints I have seen on this forum. Sometimes I have no problem with the brakes, but about half the time after staring the car the abs light comes on allong with regen brakes not working and to get the vehicle to stop requires stomping break pedal to the floor. When it first happened it almost caused me to roll past a stop sign and into on coming traffic. It is obviously a serious safety issue if the brakes randomly stop working. The repair shop of course could not duplicate the problem as the brakes were working fine then. Most likely though, the culprit is in the hydraulic braking system, hence the 'regen braking' note that comes on.

9 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2017

Abs light came on and dash said regen brakes disabled. There was no power brakes and car had a very hard time stopping and narrowly missed hitting the car in front of me. Took it to a shop and it needs abs pump which costs over $7000 to replace.

10 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2017

My awd 2008 Ford Escape Hybridv, with around 64,000 miles, started having braking problems, when the brake and abs cluster lights turned on when the car started. When I shift into any gear, the "regen brake disabled" warning comes on. I tried to revers at 5 mph and the car would barely brake. I was able to brake, but the brakes were spongy, veering to the left slightly. I went to a local auto shop and they scanned for any error codes. I received the following: c1524 brake pedal sensor cal. Incomplete, c1480 r/f brake pressure control malf. , c1313 brake hydraulic press. Transducer malf. , p0685 eng. Control module power relay control, and u0418 invalid data rcvd from control module. My cousin was able to clear the codes to see if we restarted the car and deove around if the same errors would pop back up and they did. I have read online where thousands, if not more, were having the same hydraulic/braking problems that could cost upwards of $5000 to fix. Some even reported that replacing the master cylinder didnt fix the problem. I have personally had two occassions where my car would barely stop no matter how hard I pressed down on the brake pedal. Also, when my vehicle is turned off, with the key taken out, the right front brake module or censor is emitting a high-pitched hum for several minutes when nothing is turned on. Please investigate this issue further as it seems like a very common issue with similar year model hybrids.

11 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2016

The abs light and "regen brake failure" warning lights go on and vehicle is almost impossible to stop.

12 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2016

I was driving around town and all of a sudden the brake pedal wouldn't go down, I tried again and the regenerative braking wasn't working, only felt about half power brakes. The abs light came on and a red light that said check braking system. I pulled over and turned the car off. Restarted the car back to normal.

13 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2016

When driving, abs light goes on, check brake system shown on dashboard panel, when I slow down (very slow, like in a parking lot) I can feel something underneath the car engage, and then the abs light warning go out.

14 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

Was driving the vehicle and after applying the brakes. The abs warning light came on, plus the information display indicated "check brake system" and "regen brake disabled". I was still able to brake, but needed to apply more pressure to stop and there was a new noise when I depressed the brakes. I took the vehicle to my local Ford dealer, the service associate took it for a test drive and noticed the noise and need for extra pressure on the brakes. After the technician had checked the vehicle they indicated that I needed a new hcu unit and the estimated cost was $5,200+.

15 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2015

When starting the car parked and sometimes when driving, "check brake system / regen brakes disabled" message appears along with abs light. Car loses most of its braking power from the regenerative brakes requiring a great deal of pressure on the brake pedal to stop the car. Braking power is reduced and stopping distances increasing substantially, causing near misses in heavy traffic. Dealer recommends replacing the abs control unit, which is a $4,100 part (plus labor) for an 8 year old vehicle. Thus, the only way to fix the issue is to pay more for parts and labor than the car is actually worth, rendering it worthless to the owner. This has happened multiple times over the course of two months. Sometimes the problem goes away and the car can be driven short distances with all of its braking power, sometimes it doesn't work for days at a time.

16 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2015

When driving at 35 mph the brake warning came on. I pulled over because I thought maybe the emergency brake was on, stopped, applied the emergency brake and released it, but the warning was still on. In a few miles, I arrived at my destination, checked the brake fluid level and it was fine. On the way home I got the check brake system, regen brakes disabled, abs light error. The brakes feel spongy and it takes a lot of error to stop the vehicle. The dealer has given us an estimate of $4700 to fix the problem. I see there are a lot of complaints on the internet about this same problem with the Ford Escape Hybrids and can't believe there hasn't been a recall!.

17 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the check abs warning light illuminated on the vehicles instrument panel. The contact stated that at that time the vehicle would become hard to stop the vehicle when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the failure would occur intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated because the check abs warning light was not illuminated at the time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000. Wh.

18 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2014

After being parked for several hours and upon returning to and starting the vehicle, I found several lights on the dash illuminated, including the abs light, traction control light, the service wrench & check brakes. I was also receiving a message advising the regen brakes were inactive & to check brake system. I had the vehicle towed to our local mechanic and following his check he advised the he could not find anything wrong with them & due to the hybrid nature of the vehicle, he was unable to diagnose the problem. I then carefully drove the vehicle home and took it to a local Ford dealership yesterday. I was just informed by the dealer that the hcu on the vehicle had gone bad and repairs were going to be $5,000. As you might imagine, this is an extravagent amount of money to have to put into a seven year old vehicle that only cost $34,000 brand new. The part alone is $4,000 according to the dealer. I am now forced to either have this repair done or trade the vehicle in on another Ford. Based on my experience with this current vehicle, I am not overjoyed at the prospect of owning another Ford product. I researched the internet and found hundreds of cases where this part has gone bad and I feel it is time these vehicles get recalled before somebody gets severly injured or killed. This is obviously a safety issue and while we were lucky enough to have it happen while the vehicle was parked, this defective part has or will likely cause someone serious injury or loss of life. Nhtsa needs to address this and Ford needs to admit their error and defect.

19 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the check brake system and the abs warning lights illuminated. When the brake pedal was engaged, it became stuck to the floorboard. The contact was able to coast out of traffic but ran a red light while trying to stop the vehicle. The contact had to steer the vehicle into a curb in order to stop. The vehicle was taken a local mechanic for further inspection. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileage was 70,000.

20 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2013

I was just about to get onto the freeway on-ramp, when I noticed that the car felt funny. I looked at the dashboard and saw that the abs light and the brake system warning lights. The display read, "check brakes soon" I called a friend for assistance. He added some brake fluid and suggested I bring it to be serviced. I drove home. I called the dealership in the morning and made an appointment to drop the car off as soon as possible. When I started the car in the morning, the lights were off, but I dropped it off at the dealership anyway. The service provider, don, said they couldn't find anything wrong, but they "thought" that it was the master cylinder. They said the brakes looked fine, and if I had any more problems to call back. I left the dealership. Drove around the corner to get onto the freeway and the lights came on again. (5:35pm). I stopped as soon as I could get off the freeway and called don back. He said to bring the car back in the morning and he would look at it again. I brought the car back in the morning 7:15am. The lights were off again. I picked the car up at 5:15 pm and don re-iterated his previous suggestions. I drove the car home, and the lights came back on as I was exiting the free-way. Again, the brakes took more pressure to stop. I called don and asked if there was a payment plan available. He said no. I asked if I replace the master cylinder and the problems persists, what would our next step be? he said essentially that we would address that if that should happen, but that typically one problem may CO-exist with another problem, so until they address the first problem, they may not be aware of the 2nd problem. I also sent an e-mail to the Ford company this afternoon. I asked if Ford has taken any action against the numerous amount of complaints with similar situations as are posted on the internet regarding this issue.

21 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2012

This is my second submission. This morning while driving to work the abs light came on along with a "check brake system" message and "regen brakes disabled". In the past when this happened I still had brakes but had to mash them down to get the vehicle to stop. This morning I was unable to stop the vehicle. My vehicle then went off the road and into a drainage ditch. The vehicle needed to by lynched out and towed to the dealership. I am thankful that I was only going about 30mph and ended up in a ditch rather than a busy intersection. This is a serious issue and I don't ever want to drive that vehicle again. I have 2 small children who I am thankful were not with me.

22 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2011

While driving my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, the warning chime sounded, "service brakes" flashed on the display, and I lost almost all of my braking power as I was coming up on a stop sign. I was barely able to stop. Later, after the car was turned off, the brakes were restored. This has occured several times in the last week. Each time I start the car, all is ok, as I accellerate, there is a clunk as if the engine wants to stall but keeps going due to momentum. A scan of system faults shows breaks all ok. I drive the car a few mile and the abs light comes on and the check breaks light comes on and stays on. Car still seems to run fine with abs light and check breaks indicator. But soft brakes are very woorysome.

23 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

The tone ring on the front passenger side split creating a pulsating sensation similar to the abs pulsating-however the abs warning light doesn't engage the stability sensor flashes for as long as the pulsating occurs. This only occurs while decelerating no matter what speed. I had the issue fixed. Then the issue appeared again in March 2013. I again took it to be fixed and after the mechanic replaced the cv axle and ring the issue still wasn't corrected and currently being investigated further. This issue is an annoyance and uncomfortable for any passengers riding in the vehicle that experiences this issue. The out of pocket costs associated with this problem are not 'cheap. ' Ford should address and provide a remedy to this problem that doesn't cause undue financial hardship to the owner.

24 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

Ford Escape Hybrid 2008 check brake system message with abs lights on then got regen brakes disabled when pressing brake pedal prior to taking out of park. 41438 miles (just out of warranty of course) and just experience no brakes when I backed out. I called the service desk and they claimed they never heard of any issues with regen brakes on my car or recalls. . Read more...
