2 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2019

Driving my car and the abs and brake warning light came on and brakes failed to work properly. Paul miller Ford of lexington ky. Said I needed to replace ncu and master cylinder at a cost of $9000. There has been numerous complaints I've discovered after researching this problem. The car is still at the dealer so I don't have paper work yet.

3 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2019

As I was driving about 40 mph in my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, the asb and brake warning light came on and brakes weren't functioning properly. I was able to carefully drive it home, 5 miles. After the car sat for a short time it was started and the warning lights were not on and it drove normally. I took it to Ford garage where they said the hcu malfunction and it needed replaced. The hcu problem seems to be a common problem with hybrids and vary expensive to fix and dangerous if not fixed. It's been at the local Ford garage for over 7 weeks and they can't bleed the brakes to finish the repair. Also, when they told me they couldn't bleed the brakes, I need to replace the master cylinder. That did not fix the problem of bleeding the brakes. At least it's safe sitting at the Ford garage and not being driven. Ford should recall their hcus.

4 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2019

112,000 miles while driving, vibration from right front of vehicle. Able to stop. Check engine and brake warning lights. Regenerative brake disabled. Vehicle to dealership with dtc - c1480. Internal failure of the hydraulic control unit for the abs. Cost of repair over $5000 for hybrid specific replacement part number 2c286. Numerous reports of the part failing on internet and this site. With the price the hcu quoted to be $4700, I just the rest of the parts in this vehicle must be really inexpensive (cheap) given the original $28,000 price tag.

6 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

I just bought a used 2008 Ford escape a couple weeks ago with 113,000 miles on it. A few days after I bought it I went to stop at a light from a speed of 50mph and the brake pedal went to the floor and I lost all brake power. I went onto the shoulder and almost into a ditch to prevent hitting the car in front of me. The dash read "check brake system" and "regen brakes disabled". The abs and brake lights are also illuminated. The vehicle cannot be driven and I am being told it is likely a failed hydraulic brake control unit which is a known problem and very expensive. How has Ford not issued a recall for an extremely dangerous and known problem?.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

Check brakes light comes on when reaching 40 mph, and stays on. Abs light comes on after that. Ford dealer indicates entire front left axle shaft needs replacing due to broken tone rings. Very expensive. Other repair professionals suggest that tone rings can be replaced separately; much less expense. Ford dealer won't do without entire axle being replaced. Hundreds of complaints on internet. Brake pedal pulsates and is difficult to apply brakes.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

Vehicle was in motion on a city street when the brake light came on and display read "regen brakes disabled. " the vehicle was no longer effectively braking and almost caused a collision.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2018

While driving the abs and check brake lights came on and the brakes began to make noise when the brake pedal was pressed. The car still slowed and the vehicle was driven home. Upon taking the vehicle to the dealer, the abs control assembly was found to be inoperable - this unit is both a hydraulic and electronic control unit on the Escape Hybrid. The regenerative braking system is controlled by the unit and it also failed. The fix was over $6000 from Ford. This car had 221541 miles on it, so this in effect totaled the car, which was otherwise in decent shape and still ran very well. Checking on the web - we were lucky as several other reports of this unit failing have been reported with much worse results to the owners while driving.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2018

Abs & brake warning lights on; check brake system & regen brakes disabled message center. Braking is harder, unassisted. No abs, tires can lock up on braking. Ford dealer wants $4900 for the hcu part + labor. There have been several reports online of this issue; and that it can leave a vehicle with no brakes; a safety hazzard.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2018

While driving under normal conditions, the check engine light illuminated yellow, the abs light illuminated, and the red brake light illuminated simultaneously. A message on the dash said "regen brakes disabled". The normal braking system failed to work. The manual (fail safe) braking system was inadequate to stop properly. I had to put the brake pedal to the floor as hard as possible and the car still did not brake properly. After much rolling, the car finally came to a stop, but hit a pole in the process causing a crack in the front bumper. Due to the long stopping process, the pole was unavoidable. It was the pole, the ditch, or another car, so I had to choose to bump into the pole for the least amount of damage and to be sure not to hurt anyone else. Traumatic experience for me and my young grandchildren!.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

Abs light / brake light goes off and on with a message check brake system - regen brakes disabled - replaced broken tone ring, new brakes and rotors and the light continues to stay on - several complaints on this unsafe issue with the 08 hybrid - Ford needs to recall this vehicle before someone is in a serious accident.

13 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

I was in a busy shopping plaza and came up to a 4 way stop. When I pressed the brakes, the car didn't stop! a message reading "regen brakes disabled" came up on the screen, followed by "check brake system". Both the abs and brake warning lights came on on the dash. I tried turning the vehicle off and then on again as sometimes when it has an electrical hiccup that will resolve the issue. The same message reappeared and I drove straight to a local garage. They were unable to definitively determine the issue and referred me to the Ford dealership. A few days later, Ford advised me that it was a failure of the hydraulic control unit which will need to be replaced. This is definitely a safety issue. All of the pieces within the brake system are in tact, everything that can be inspected during routine tune ups looks fine, but suddenly when you are driving the brain of the car can't remember how to make it stop.

14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, "the check brake system light illuminated" and the "regen brake disable" light illuminated without warning. A dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 139,000. Ad.

15 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

My car's abs and brake lights have come with messages reading "check brake system" and "regen brake disabled. " at times the brakes will appeear to fail and I have to slam them very hard to stop.

16 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2018

Brake light with abs light come on the dash and loose the brake and vehicle becomes too dangerous to drive .

17 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2018

My Ford Escape Hybrid 2008 brakes failed on may 14, 2018 nearly causing a head-on collision. The pedal went completely to the floor after my abs light & parking brake lights were illuminated on the dash, it also displayed "check brake system" as well as "regen brakes disengaged". I purchased the vehicle in November of 2017 from a used car dealer. It was immediately brought to them where they attempted to scan for any codes but instructed me to take to Ford where it could be properly scanned. I had an appointment on 5/17 for the abs codes to be scanned where they found two codes: left front brake pressure & a faulty hydraulic control unit. They stated that this part has been failing among the hybrid vehicles and Ford has issued a 'special service message' regarding these parts as it is nearly $6,000 to replace with no guarantee of it working. The fact that Ford has not issued a recall for this dangerous faulty part with evidence all across the internet and various other sources I have researched. I have made my state's attorney general (CT),the Ford motor company, local news stations, bbb all aware of the issue in hopes that something will change Ford motor companies mind in avoiding any other near accidents or even deaths to occur. Please contact me if any other materials are needed. I will pursue all appropriate avenues until Ford initiates a recall. Thank you very much.

18 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2018

While driving, the brake light and the abs light came on along with two messages "regen brakes disabled" and "check brake system". Car brakes very hesitantly which I consider to be extremly dangerous. Took it to local Ford dealer. He read codes 1478, 1480 and u2023. Quoted me that I need the abs module replaced at usd 5,537. 00 plus tax. This is above the kbb value of the car. Investigating on the net there is easily hundreds of the samecomplaint of people loosing their car as it is beyond economical repair. On top, I think I only got lucky that the failure did not happen while driving and needing brakes in an emergency situation. Please look into this safety issue. Thanks.

19 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2018

I recently purchased a used 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid with 112k miles from a large dealership. The vehicle had an inspection done at the dealership and one done by an independent mechanic. No codes or signs of brake failure were apparent. Within the first week, with less than 25 additional miles on the vehicle, while driving on a city street in normal conditions, the braking system failure light came on and the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The "regenerative braking system failure" light came on, the abs brake light came on. Fortunately there was no serious accident and no collisions, we were able to slowly get the car to our home. The next day the brakes then functioned properly and no light was being displayed. I called the dealership regarding paperwork and informed the salesman of the situation and told him if it happened again I would take it in and have it checked. Well it happened again on April 26th, while driving down a city street. This time we were barely able to come to a stop before running through a stop sign. No accidents occurred. I brought it into an independent mechanic and they diagnosed it as a full hydraulic brake system failure (the hydraulic control unit) for an estimated repair cost of $5800. 00. It is obviously a serious safety issue if the brakes randomly stop working. I guess it will take a loss of life and lawsuit before the NHTSA will do something. By the NHTSA's own words : a recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Most decisions to conduct a recall and remedy a safety defect are made voluntarily by manufacturers prior to any involvement by NHTSA. ". Legally, what is happening with this vehicle meets your own statement.

20 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2018

Vehicle abs reg/brake warning light came on with 100,000 miles on it. Vehicle's brakes were working on a limited basis, unsafe to drive. The vehicle's braking ability was eratic and did not stop at multiple intersections. The part that failed according to codes was a hydraulic brake control unit that cost about $5000 if using a new oem part. Had car repaired at dealership using a part with all matching numbers that was rebuilt, but the dealership would not warranty the repair. Proceeded anyway, brakes functioned properly for about one week. This issue has returned and the codes indicate it needs a new hcu, again. The car failed to stop at a red light but avoided an accident. The car can not be driven at this time. Research shows this is a common failure of this make and model.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2018

Takata recall my brake light is on.

22 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

Vehicle abs reg/brake warning light came on. Vehicles brakes are working on a limited basis, unsafe to drive. Appears front brakes are not working. This occurred while driving a highway speeds. The part that has failed is a hydraulic brake control that cost about $5000. 00 (per dealer quote). Car can not be driven at this time.

23 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2018

Brake system failure. Abs and red brake lights came on while driving and almost caused a serious accident. An inexperienced driver would've crashed.

24 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that the abs brake light illuminated as there was a loss of braking power. The vehicle has not been inspected and diagnosed by an independent mechanic and a dealer. 7 TSB had been issued on the brake system for the hybrid model, 40 TSB on the non-hybrid model and no brake system recall yet for the hybrid as well as the non-hybrid model. The vehicle was not repaired yet. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

25 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2017

Pending failure of the hydraulic brake control unit. Abs, check engine and service brake lights would come on and go off. When lights are on the vehicle is more difficult to stop. Reading other's posts online, this seems to be an issue that happens often. Vehicle is unsafe to drive once failure is present. Only way to fix is with a $4,500 part that you have to get new from Ford. . . .

26 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2017

While approaching an intersection at 45mph with a stop signal brake pedal went to the floor with little to no braking effect. Got stopped in the middle of intersection without hitting anything or being hit. Yellow abs and red brake lights illuminated. Ford dealership reports that vehicle needs new hbcu @ $5000. Multiple car forums with same exact issue. So far no one killed and Ford will not admit any problems or try to satisfy customers with a fix. I have now reached out to you for help and make this issue a matter of documentation with the nhstb. Please get involved before this gets ugly.

27 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2017

The abs and brake lights come on and the brake regeneration disabled is displayed on dash. When this happens there is a loss of braking power. This happens when driving. When I researched this I found this is a common problem. It calls for the ecu to be replaced and the repair is $5,000. Ford needs to recall and replace this part as it is a safety concern due to brake failure.

28 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2017

Loss of brake function while driving. Abs warning light illuminates during driving. Warning message "check brake system" warning message "regen braking disabled" at times need to press brake very hard just to have the vehicle slowly roll to a stop. Occasionally, the parking brake light is illuminated and almost feels like it is partially engaged, even though I did not depress the parking brake pedal. I've researched on the internet and there are hundreds of complaints about this same exact problem - many on the 2008 Escape Hybrid itself, but many on other escape years as well. Ford denies this as a problem. I spoke to both my dealer and Ford corporation - they say they haven't heard about any braking problems on the Escape Hybrids -they lie through their teeth. Maybe NHTSA can make them own up to their problem before someone really gets hurt - or worse.

29 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Regan brakes system fails with no warning making stopping almost impossible shut vech off and maybe problem goes away maybe not. When starting brake system light on dash stays on which makes no brakes or light goes out and may come on later with no warning there are many many complaints involving 2008 hybrids looking at all complaints it seems Ford knows about failure but wont fix we have been told it was made that way and will cost 4000-5000 thousand dollars for consumer to fix.

30 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

2008 Ford escape hydraulic control unit failure. Check brake system, abs, and emergency brake lights all game on. Drove car with limited brakes to mechanic who got codes c1978 and u2023. $4,700 part. This seems very dangerous and really disappointed that Ford has not done a recall on this item.

31 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2017

Yellow abs light and red emergency brake lights illuminated while driving. Brake petal went soft to the point where braking was difficult. A Ford service center diagnosed the problem and indicated that the hydraulic control unit (hcu) needs to be replaced. The part costs $4800 dollars and the total repair is $5300. This is not an uncommon problem for the Escape Hybrid. And in my case, renders the vehicle essentially worthless since the cost of the repair is slightly more than the value of tahe vehicle itself. I've been given no alternatives or options.

32 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2017

Vehicle brakes fail for no apparent reason, then eventually begin working for no apparent reason. No warning is given that anything is wrong with the brakes (I. E. No brake light, and no "check engine" light). In addition, the "all ok" light remains green, indicating that nothing is wrong. This occurs when the vehicle is moving at any speed (I. E above 35 mph or below 5 mph). The vehicle eventually comes to a stop, but only after a lengthy deceleration distance.

33 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2017

Abs & parking brake warning lights, warning tone & regen brake message are displayed. When this has happened the brake performance became "grabby" and over time the brakes were dangerously bad. For several months if I stopped the vehicle, turned off ignition and restarted, the warnings would go away and the brakes would function normally. I informed the Ford technician the last time I had regular service of this problem and they found " no issue" with brakes. I took vehicle back to Ford 06/22/2017 and they told me the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced at a cost in excess of $5,800. 00. I will discard this vehicle and replace it with a non -Ford product.

34 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2016

86,000 milage. Abs sevice light on for couple months. Past 2 days regen brakes disabled message on, and red brake warning light on, brakes a little stiff in operation thus far. Apparently this is a frequent problem, and $5000 to fix. Can I rely on the mechanical backup braking? even if so I am now not charging my hv battery, so will be just carrying around a heavy load, with no benefit to the co2 environment. When will Ford be required to recal & remedy this?.

35 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

Last week I went outside and got in my car to run some errands and when I started the car the red brake light, orange abs light, and the chimer stating "regenerative brake disengaged" "check brakes" began to light. The brakes are working (knock on wood) but are tricky to operate. This morning I took the car to the mechanic and they stated it was most likely in need of a new hcu costing around $5,000 (I am going to get the vehicle checked one more time before parking it for good). As I read the complaints on NHTSA's web site, it appears folks at NHTSA are fully knowledgeable about this safety hazard (as each page is filed with same, if not worse, complaints) and are not going to act until someone gets killed. It is also blatantly obvious that Ford is not going to act either. The 2008 Escape Hybrid has been a great vehicle, until now (132,000 miles). The price to fix this issue is slightly less than what the car is worth and compared to all other brands made it very few miles. Now it is time to turn my outrage regarding this issue over to my state representatives. I cannot believe their are no class action lawsuits before someone gets killed (it is a matter of time, if not already the case). This issue should warrant a recall, they are brakes for god's sake.
