1 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/09/2018

I bought my vehicle, used, a couple of years ago. I asked for the carfax and if there were any issues with the vehicle. The salesman let me glance at his screen and scrolled through to humor me and promised there were no issues. A few days ago while driving on the highway using cruise control, the cc kicked off and my car jerked. Since then, I have had trouble accelerating and controlling the speed of my car. A littel orange wrench came on. This morning as I was driving to work, the check engine light came on. I felt like I almost got into 3 accidents for lack of control of my car. I took it to the shop and they told me I shouldn't even be driving it because of the lack of speed control. Now I'm stuck paying hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands, for lack of proper disclosure and faulty manufacturing. Ford issues a lifetime warranty rather than a recall, which is a disgrace as they're waiting for customers to deal with problems and get hurt before they fix anything. This should not be possible!.

2 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/02/2018

Throttle body replacement after repetitive wrench light, limp mode, and engine light. Dealer stated ours was not to have recall, but active warranty extension shows other 2. 5l vehicles under 150,000 miles and within the 10 years of the model. Looking up the part they are the same part numbers being replaced non hybrids. This is excluding vehicles that not only originally cost more, but have defective parts int eh same year ranges as other 4 cylinders. They also have 6 cylinders showing that this is a more widespread issue with other parts on other throttle bodies outside that engine size. This shows poor manufacture of similar and for mine the same as the non-hybrid. Will contact national service next. Hybrids should be included. I have had 5 and feel my current model may be next and is showing some symptoms. This 2009 has always shown some surging surging for the 4 years. It is in the south where moisture is a problem when humidity and ocean salt can amplify when visiting on occasion. The issues appeared on the highway at first in a feeling of surging when on cruise control and could be seen in the rpm, almost like the transmission was slipping. As it progressed we replaced 3 emission parts, and finally in the last month the car was crippled to a point that the check engine light came on and the wrench light may or may not light, but car would not go past 45mph, and even felt sluggish like it was not accelerating making it dangerous to drive to work. We could not call off work to take it to the service garage, and almost had it towed to the shop. This was similar to the 2005 we had except it was due to the coolant circulation pump. The only difference was the engine did not shut down after limping as the other did. They normally are good, but I felt not represented this time, and they were just happy to have me pay. I do have receipt. 485. 00.

5 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/17/2016

While driving on interstate at highway speeds lost acceleration going uphill and wrench light came on. Pulled to side of road and stopped. Stopped engine for a few minutes and restarted. Engine started normally and check engine light came on. Acceleration erratic and rpm on acceleration high but not in the redline. Once on level highway could get to highway speeds and leveled out at a constant speed and rpm was near normal. Drove to dealership. Dealership reported no codes but electronic throttle body shorting internally. Replaced electronic throttle body. Dealership stated the electronic throttle body was not covered under warranty. Vehicle had 90, 232 miles at dealership.

6 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/20/2016

I own a 2012 Ford escape and have had it in the shop over ten times. I have brought it in for transmission issues and check engine lights coming on. Multiple times they have gave me an oil change and cleaned the solenoids. My transmission still sputters and once again my check engine light has come back on. One time I lost complete power and was almost killed in an intersection. If anyone wants to take my car for testing they can. I don't know what to do anymore and am scared that someone is going to get killed. Ford needs to be held responsible for fixing this issue. I have heard from multiple sites that this is a huge issue. The engine has been described to me like a helicopter and when it shifts like I am a nascar driver.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/27/2015

While driving, the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid slowed suddenly and while I still had power, I was unable to accelerate. I was on a busy road and there was nothing I could do to get my vehicle to "go". The "service engine soon" light came on and we were able to enter a neighborhood and pull over. We turned off the car and looked through the manual but couldn't find anything. The car started up again and seemed to drive normal but with the "check engine light" illuminated. The dealership said the electronic throttle needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, it appears to be a common issue and while they refused to issue a recall, Ford has issued a "customer satisfaction program" to extend the warranty on that particular part - with the exception of the hybrid model. This problem is the exact issue that has been happening in the other escapes and I don't understand why the hybrid is excluded from the extended warranty. That was not only terrifying but dangerous.

9 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/08/2014

On a trip from cincinnati OH to bloomington in, roughly 140 miles, the check engine light came on several times with no apparent driveability issues. The return trip a few hours later, however, on a busy highway at 75 mph the vehicle suddenly lost power showing the message "pull over safely immediately". It was difficult to navigate to the shoulder without power, and very frightening. After a few minutes I was able to start and run the vehicle again for about 10 minutes before experiencing the power loss again. After a tow and oil change I was sent on my way only to have the same issue again several times before getting another tow all the way home. This has happened several times since, only at highway speeds, always dangerous and scary. The dealer is replacing the merc pump and a couple other items for a cost of over 1200. 00. This should be a recall issue--so many complaints already lodged and such a dangerous situation.

10 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

This week the news had stories about general motors recalling several cars because the ignition can suddenly turn off causing the car to lose power while driving. There were even deaths due to bad accidents as a result of the ignition failure and car losing power. This reminded me of an incident that happened to me which was similar. I was driving my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid last December, on I-280 in san francisco during rush hour at 65 mph, when suddenly the dash beeped at me, flashed the check engine light, displayed a message to pull over safely, and the engine had no power! I suddenly found myself in heavy traffic, middle lane of the freeway and no power to safely pull over. I was losing speed and slowed to where I cut between other cars and over to the shoulder. I'm sure I cut someone off in the process. Luckily there was not a horrible accident. There could have easily been an accident. The same thing happened three more times in the next few days before I took the car to the dealer to be fixed. They indicated that this is a common problem of which they are aware. The Ford dealer diagnosed it with code p1a0d, which was a bad coolant pump for the electric generator. I did some research and found that many other Ford escape owners have experienced the same situation as I did where the vehicle lost power while at high speed and put them into a dangerous situation. A simple google search on this finds several blog reports of people with similar situations. Ford has yet to issue a recall on this, but I have found that there is a class action lawsuit against Ford: macdonald v. Ford, case no. 3:13-cv-02988, in the us district court for the northern district of California.

11 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

While driving on the highway, my check engine light came on and the car immediately switched from gas to electric. From that point on, the car would not transition back to gas. Took the car to Ford and had to have the throttle body and motor assembly replaced.
