Our 2009 Ford hybrid escape caught fire in our driveway. The fire department came and it took two firemen to put it out. The entire front was destroyed. Even the dash board was melted as a result of the fire. It appeared to be an electrical trigger, but there is no certainiy as to what cause this fire, which had flames nearly 10 feet high. My son was sitting in the car taliking on the phone. He came running in sayng there was smoke in the car and when I looked out the window it had already started to catch fire. Smoke and catch fire. I am thankful he was not injured and that my house -a cedar sided home- did not catch on fire.

This has happened multiple times randomly without warning. I have been on a freeway, bridge, regular street, traffic. A red warning light will come on with "stop safely now" and the car will quickly slow down. It will go really slow regardless of stepping on the gas. Once I pull over I have t stop the car and put it in park then turn it back on. This is extremely dangerous especially when I am on the freeway or on the bridge (I work in san francisco).

On Sunday, April 22, 2018, while ascending a grade on the pacific coast highway in newport beach, CA, the yellow wrench warning light on my 2010 Ford escape suddenly illuminated and the vehicle rapidly deaccelerated and did not respond to the throttle. At that moment I was in the left lane of a 3-lane highway with other vehicles approaching from behind and passing at 50 mph. My vehicle slowed to about 5 mph as I attempted to move to the right where I hoped it had enough momentum that I could make it to the top of the grade and exit the highway. The right-hand exit was downhill and I was able to coast and creep into a market parking lot where I turned off the engine and tried to calm down. From the vehicle manual I learned that the yellow wrench indicated throttle control or drive train problems. as it turned out it was a Sunday morning and I did not have a phone with me so I decided to try restarting the engine. It started and the yellow wrench did not illuminate. After a short test drive in the parking lot I decided to cancel my errands and try to return home, a distance of a few miles. I drove at 25-30 mph on residential side streets and made it home with no further problems. The next day I took the car into the local Ford dealer and described what had happened. I was told they would look into it and report back. Later I was informed that the problem was a defective throttle body and they had a replacement part. When I came in to pick up the car I was informed that there was no charge because the repair was under warranty! this was a big surprise, since I had never received any notice of a potential problem nor of a warranty extension. Sudden deacceleration would be dangerous on a freeway in rush hour traffic, not mitigated by "limp home" capability.

My 2009 Escape Hybrid had the same throttle body failure as shown in pe13003 and dp12006. I was driving on busy street on way to airport when wrench light and engine light came on and car lost power to accelerate which was scary to say the least! I managed to drive (or rather limp) to side street to prevent being hit and tried turning engine on and off. Wrench light went off but engine light remained on and drove car to Ford dealer in limp mode. I was advised by them that my car went into limp mode to prevent any further damage to engine. I let them know I have extended warranty(premium esp) that was good up to 109,913 miles /Aug. 2017 and currently had 108,287miles. The throttle is covered under this warranty however I was told the throttle did not need replacing. I was told the throttle was spitting gas as throttle door not opening properly and "the throttle had a cold which needed taking care of" and just needed a throttle/ fuel injection cleaning service. I was charged $346. 18 for fuel injection cleaning and flush, hybrid battery filter and labor. I'm concerned this will happen again as throttle was not replaced and my problem was identical to the others investigated in pe13003. I don't understand why throttle wasn't replaced. Are Escape Hybrids not included in previous investigations? why not??? under my warranty, if throttle was replaced it would have cost me less than cleaning it. Is this just a money making ploy at the expense of safety? please advise if Escape Hybrids will be investigated for throttle problems. Thank you.
I was never told about a recall and this car frame was cracked and was never told about it from anyone front the dealer I bought it from or the company that fixed it.
Vehicle intermittently enters "limp mode" showing dtc p2112:00-64 code: p2112 - throttle actuator control system - stuck closed. Instances have occurred at highway speeds, at below 40 mph and starting from a stop. Status.
I was driving at 55 mph on the highway and the wrench light came and following engine light , the car suddenly began to slow down , after that acerlation would not go more than 15mph, checked the code got p2112.
Its driving ok and then it starts losing power to 20 mph and it wont speed more from there until its turn off for hours then im driving again and it keeps doing the same thing.
Vehicle suddenly loses acceleration due to throttle body and motor assembly. Ford has extended their warranty on escape but has no warranty for the hybrid limited.
Our vehicle seemingly randomly shuts off all power to the engine and the electric motor. This can happen while we are moving or stopped in an intersection. We get a message of stop safely now on the dashboard. When you are in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn left in six lanes of traffic and your car stops for no apparent reason this isn't very safe. This has happened about 30 times. Sometimes it goes a year without a mishap or three times in one day.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving 55 mph, the throttle control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was advised not to drive the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
It was been more than couple years ago when I had error message" stop safely now" on my Ford 2008 Escape Hybrid. During that time, I was driving interstate round 50-60 miles per hour and all of sudden, it stop the engine. I took the dealer the next day. They get it fixed. Until recently, may 22, 2016 and June 20,2016 the error "stop safely message" came back. I took to the same dealer I used to go but this time. I left it for 2 days but the dealer said it will take a while to diagnose whats is the issue. I had to rent a car for those days but my car was not fix or the dealer saying it will take a while. I am sure they know what is the error code. Is this a recall?I seen other complain in here almost the same like me.
Driving car and brakes failed completely. Had to jump on the brakes to get any traction whatsoever. Was fortunately able to use the emergency brake before I got into an accident. Yellow abs and red brake lights are on, along with messages of check brake system and regen brakes disabled. Appears to be a common problem with Escape Hybrid that it is the hydraulic control unit - a part to repair which is more expensive than the car is worth.
On March 9, 2016, our 2009 Escape Hybrid completely "stopped" in traffic on boulder highway, las vegas, nevada which occurred about 1 mile from a carwash that we have frequently used no less than 15 times annually. Our vehicle had completely stopped in traffic 5 times within a 1 mile distance between the initial stop on boulder highway to our RV park. At the initial stop in traffic my wife and I had to push our vehicle into a gas station because the vehicle would not restart. Each time the vehicle stopped the red master vehicle electrical hazard warning light had come on and the digital panel showed the message "stop safely". The master vehicle electrical hazard warning light "indicates hybrid component fault/failure that will cause the vehicle to shutdown or fail to start". The vehicle did both. The vehicle was towed to Ford country in henderson, nevada. A diagnostic test was performed, however, the computer results showed an abs and transmission issue, but no hybrid problem. The abs and transmission error codes eventually cleared themselves. The Ford technicians stated that since the undercarriage had been washed, as always, an electrical sensor had probably created the failure. I questioned the idea that car washing could create the problem since the only opening to the hybrid battery is the vent located on the driver's side near the rear of the vehicle. The master vehicle electrical hazard warning light failure resulted in the complete shutdown of our vehicle in traffic and is worrisome since our experience could have resulted in a major accident with possible fatal consequences. If a regular carwash is the diagnosis for the warning of a "hybrid component failure", which completely shuts down the engine in traffic, there may be a vehicle design issue. And, the fact that the escape's computer failed to store the error code is also alarming.
In 2012, I was driving on freeway at approx 70mph when I heard the warning sound and red light warning me to "stop safely now. " I had to cross four lanes of traffic and barely got to the shoulder before the power shut down completely. I waited and it restarted, but it did it two more times before I reached my destination. I called and took my vehicle for repair, which was determined to be the coolant pump (cost $1010. 96). The next year a recall for this issue occurred and I was refunded the cost for repair. Today, 2015, the same issue occurred. This time I had just pulled off from a traffic light making a u-turn, so traveling maybe 10 mph when I got the same sound and warning red light as I felt the engine losing power. I got through the busy intersection and safely to the shoulder. I immediately drove the vehicle to the dealership. This time I was told the issue was the throttle body. It was cleaned and reprogrammed (cost $369. 15; I was told my vehicle is not in the VIN# group). While the costs have been high financially, we are mostly concerned about the potential costs from having the vehicle suddenly lose power and shut down. Both times I have been very lucky to avoid crashes. Same symptoms, different diagnoses; concerned about what might happen next.
Electronic throttle body failure equivalent to the customer satisfaction program but told my VIN number is not in the applicable group. Loss of all engine power while on the freeway traveling at 65mph with a semi tractor trailor behind me. I was barely able to get the vehicle onto the side of the road.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle lost power. The accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000. Oo.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving approximately 30 mph, the "turn off engine immediately" warning indicator illuminated. The contact pulled over and waited approximately 30 minutes before the vehicle was restarted. After the vehicle was restarted, a lock with a key warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle was previously serviced per an unknown recall for the same failure in 2013. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Poor acceleration, lost power on highway. Would not accelerate with gas pedal pushed. Pulled over side and restart. Enough power to make it home 10 miles but still poor acceleration.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving various speeds, the stop safely now warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle decelerated independently. After shutting down the vehicle for several minutes, it resumed normal operation once restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician determined that the throttle body would need to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not affected by a customer satisfaction program. The contact experienced the failure described in the program. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 106,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving at 65 mph, the electronic coolant system warning indicator was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

The issue has happened several times. Latest was 2 days ago. While driving, the car acceleration all of a sudden drops to zero and the car will not go. It does not shut off but it cannot be driven. After about 2 or 3 minutes a message comes on the dash that says "it is safe to shut off your vehicle now. " once the vehicle is shut off and I wait about 5 minutes I can start it again. It happens while driving down the road. There is a recall issued for this problem but because there isn't a yellow triangle warning on my dash Ford and the dealer will not do the recall because there is a shortage of parts. So I have to drive an unsafe car until there are parts available all because I don't have a code. Dealer claims there is a ground fault wire problem and refuses to do the recall. This is really unsafe when driving down the freeway and all of a sudden the car comes to a complete stop on me. They know it's a problem for people but won't fix it because they don't have the parts even though recall letters came out in October. It's now January.
My wife left our house to run errands in our 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. She didn't even get out of the neighborhood before she got the "stop safely now" warning, and the vehicle went into "limp home mode". She turned around in a neighbor's driveway and came back home. I took it to the dealership today thinking that it might be the mecs pump for which there is a recent recall. It turns out that it was the throttle body causing the warning. Even though there was a NHTSA investigation on the throttle bodies of these vehicles (dp12006), the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrids were not included in Ford consumer satisfaction program #13n03, which extends the warranty of the throttle body on some escape models (among other vehicles). So, I now have to spend $775. 00 to replace a part that was known to have issues. Luckily, my wife was not on the highway with our 2-month old daughter when this occurred. I don't quite understand how escapes from 2005 to 2012 were part of the investigation, but the preliminary evaluation pe13-003 only applies to 2009 - 2012 models.
