I have owned this car since 2006 when I bought it new. After about four years the battery pack blew and had to be replaced. It would have cost $4000 but thankfully I had purchased the extended warranty and it was covered. On sept. 20, 2014 the car threw a rod and the engine was completely destroyed. The mechanic said it would cost $5000 to fix it with a rebuilt engine but that it wasn't worth it because the engines for these cars are notoriously unreliable and it would probably just fail again. It was recommended that we scrap the car. The entire lifecycle of this vehicle was only 8 years which is absolutely preposterous. Cars should last longer.

Mecs coolant pump defect causes loss of engine power at highway speeds resulting in an extremely unsafe condition. Ford is aware of the defect in this "hybrid unique" component but refuses to cover it under their hybrid component warranty. In my case I was driving at 55mph on a public highway when the dash illuminated a red triangle with the message "stop safely now". I had to scramble to get to the right shoulder and create a dangerous condition by cutting off the drivers around me. I had to pay out of pocket for a redesigned mecs pump replacement and have not experienced the issue since. Pending lawsuit, macdonald v. Ford motor CO. , case number 3:13-cv-02988, in the u. S. District court for the northern district of California.

A warning appeared "stop safely now. " we pulled over and restarted. We were able to drive the vehicle in for service without the light coming on again. The diagnosis was a bad throttle body and it was replaced under warranty and listed as a recall in the service report.
First sign of trouble was an alert on the dash reading ‘stop safely now!’ and the vehicle power (engine) cut out.

My car hasn't had any other symptoms and was working fine. On 7/21/14 I was driving at 40 for maybe 5 minutes when the "safety alert" light came on and was prompted to pull over safely. I was in three lanes of traffic, going up a large hill and was doing my best to make it over to the shoulder but the car was not accelerating above 20 at this point and was getting slower and slower. I made it over one lane and the car completely stopped and started rolling back a little. The car never turned off though ac, lights, radio, etc stayed on but nothing would happen when I pressed on the gas. I turned the car off for a few minutes and turned it back on and it worked normally for about a minute and then the same thing happened. I got the car towed to the dealership and was quoted around $800 to replace the throttle. Ford has recalled over half million vehicles for similar issues with the throttle, including many escapes.
I was driving along a fairly busy highway in pennsylvania. The engine all of sudden stopped and this is very dangerous in busy traffic. Luckily we were able to pull over and waited for the car to cool. It restarted and then again did the same thing several miles down the road. This happened again on 19 July 2014 along small town road not far from home. The car was barely warm. We had replaced the battery pack air filter on 17 July 2014, thinking that this may have caused the problem. There is 'stop safely now 'message that appears just before it suddenly stops. This is a very dangerous situation, I can't believe that someone has not done a recall on this.
Received the red master vehicle electrical hazard warning lamp, immediately followed by engine shutting down while on highway. Cause was a failure of the mecs pump Ford pn 5m6z-8c419-a. After it happened I researched and found other reports issued for same issue. While driving down the freeway, the car abruptly lost power and a stop safely now light came on. The car was coasting on the freeway in the middle of traffic. It was as if it was suddenly in neutral. I restarted the vehicle when I reached the edge of the road and had acceleration again. I was stranded with my children so I attempted to go at a very safe speed in the slow lane. The problem occurred another 3 times before reaching home. Upon research, this is a very common occurrence with Escape Hybrids. I called Ford cust. Service and after reporting my issue, the representative said he had no knowledge of such problems and was actually rude to me. I called the local dealer and he said the common issue would not be covered under warranty. Now, I have an extremely unsafe car with a very common problem and appear to be getting no assistance.
We were driving east on I-26 in south carolina at 65 mph in 3 lanes of traffic when the triangle hazard warning light on the dash sounded and lit up saying "pull over safely now". At the same time , with the gas peddle floored, the speed of the car was slowing by the second! the gas peddle did not work. We were able to pull over and turn the car off without getting hit by oncoming traffic. Per the manual, we waited awhile and restarted the car, and were able to get it home. I called the Ford customer care line to ask if it was safe to drive the car and would this happen again. They were not helpful at all. They basically told me to take it to a dealership. Our local dealership said they knew nothing about the issue I described, but diagnosed the problem as being an mecs pump failure for $135. The replacement cost would be $800. Due to the high cost quote and knowing that it only takes 45 minutes or less to change this pump, we took it elsewhere. The part is $277. Our concern is that how could Ford dealers not know about this dangerous defect, when in 3 seconds you can pull up hundreds of websites covering this failure, and the dangerous and potentially fatal accident it could cause. Now I have found this us dot website which has hundreds of complaints on this issue also,I am hoping more people will come forward to get these cars off the road.
My 06' hybrid escape completely shut down, it just gave me a " please pull over now". I almost caused a major accident on i44 at 75mph because of all power loss. When I was on the side of the highway I let it sit for like a minute and then restarted the engine and it drove a good 5 minutes at about 60 mph but as soon as I accelerated above 60 it gave me the sign again, and I had to repeat the process. I drove it home on the access road staying between 30-40 and thank god, it made it home.
We purchased this Ford Escape Hybrid in August, 2012, after procuring a pre-sale evaluation at Ford dealer 1, including a full VIN search for any incomplete recalls. The evaluation found nothing incomplete. Returning home 6. 11. 14, on our residential street, the escape without prior warning flashed ¿stop vehicle safely and simultaneously turned off all power. Research indicated a failed oem mecs coolant pump (TSB 08-24-5), and we had issues getting the correct part from Ford dealer 1 and sourced a dorman part from the local x auto parts store, supplying it to an ase-certified shop for installation (vehicle inoperable/on a lift). Another ¿stop vehicle safely event occurred 6. 24. 14 with my family in the vehicle on an expressway entrance ramp, with the escape taken to Ford dealer 2 for evaluation. Ford dealer 2¿s VIN check found csp 07b48 and TSB 09-18-6, not available previously. Ford dealer 2 made repairs consistent with the csp/TSB on 7. 12. 14 at our expense. These serious safety implications well-known to Ford (both csp 07b48/TSB 09-18-6 and TSB 08-24-5) were not identified by Ford dealer 1 in our pre-purchase inspection, or by Ford in a prior investigation and repair of the corrosion issues in this escape. We are concerned that known/identified safety issues generating an errant bcm signal disabling the car made this particular escape a ticking time bomb. We could not have been aware of the issues despite our diligence, but Ford had direct access to that information. We were fortunate when/where our failures occurred. For anyone else in a similar escape with the csp 07b48/TSB 09-18-6 and TSB 08-24-5 repairs not already accomplished, the nhsta should compel a long-overdue recall for the affected vehicles.
While going about 73mph in passing lane-heard "beep" dashboard had red triangle lite up and a message to stop safely now--then car just stopped!! I was in the far left lane--pullled off into median--read manual--started car up and went--on return trip same thing--altho now I was always looking for my "exit"--altho was panicking going thru tunnel in boston. Ford had recall on this sysytem that ended in 2009--I bought this in 2012. Brought to Ford dealer--they said there was no recall and for a starting fee of $120/hr they could take a look. I called Ford in mi-told too late--too bad. . So now I have printed out recall and will bring to a different dealer on Monday. Saw that this is an ongoing safety issue that Ford will not take ownership of.
Error code is "stop safely now". I was driving, and all in the sudden - an error message came up on dash display "stop safely now". Immediately, the car was totally shut down right after, lost the ability to stop, and I have no controls of any thing. I was lucky that I'm in a middle of a parking lot. I almost got hit with the car drove right behind me. What if this incident occurs on a freeway at a high speed. My car is fully well maintenance with such low miles for 2006.
Car went from a high speed 60km to no acceleration in the middle of traffic. The engine was still running but the car would not accelerate. The error code indicate a throttle body issue.
Time of day: 1800, temperature about 80f. "stop safely now" message appeared on console. Vehicle slowed down while travelling at 65mph on an interstate highway during a heavy rush hour traffic. Fortunately, I was travelling on the left lane and safely moved to the left curb and within seconds the engine died. I kept trying to start but no success. While on the phone with the insurance company for a tow truck, I tried again, and the engine restarted. I was able to continue driving home for about 25 minutes, approximately 15 miles. While approaching a traffic light, the "stop safely now" message appeared and this time the car died in the middle of the street. This time, it died within 3 seconds after the message appeared. It was a major safety hazard when other cars were approaching and with very little room to stop and react. This was in a 35 mph residential zone. I had to call a local police department to assist managing the traffic. After about 15 minutes, I was able to start the car again and continued the last 2 blocks to my resident. This is a serious safety issue that could have resulted in multi cars accident had I not had the opportunity to drive to the curb before it stopped.
Starting in may of 2014, my car's performance has been untrustworthy. Some days there's no problem-- I push on the gas pedal and the car moves accordingly. At a stop sign, I can go. While moving at 50 mph on the freeway, I can easily accelerate and move around a monster size 18 wheeler. But on the days when I press the gas pedal and the car doesn't respond, I sweat. Here's a description: foot on the gas pedal, no response. . . So I press down further, without any acceleration of the car. Finally, now freaked out that the car is not moving (and that another car is right on my tail) I press the pedal to the floor-- with no immediate reaction. Then-- bam-- surprise! it works and the sudden surge sends me flying beyond intention and I must press on the brakes to slow. At stop signs this happens and people behind me get frustrated, probably thinking I'm on drugs or something. But really, it's not me; it's my Ford Escape Hybrid 2008. The rate of incidence has gradually increased from may to the current date of July, and consequently, I am afraid to drive this car.
Car engine turned off at 70 mph. I was able to drive the car to the shoulder of the road. Prior to the engine shut-off, only the "wrench indicator" was on; it comes on occasionally. Service centers can never diagnose the issue once the car has turned off. Warning light on dash said "safety mode" at the time of engine shut-off. I was able to restart the car after about two minutes. Dash warning indictors turned off. Got back on the interstate only for the car engine to turn-off again at the base of an off-ramp about four miles farther up the road. I was driving the car at 55-60 mph before the second incident. I was able to pull into the Ford dealership.
Car goes limp. Ford has TSB 08-24-05. Mecp fails. Poor design. Has gone limp on me ~8 times. Each time car drifts to a stop regardless of location, speed, etc. . . (eg, can be going 75mph on highway) and it goes limp. Cannot move afterwards for minutes. Many cases of this happening have been reported. TSB 08-24-5 states that some 2005-2008 Escape Hybrid and 2006-2008 mariner hybrid vehicles may exhibit a red triangle light and codes indicating a transaxle overtemp. This condition may result in reduced power as the system activates fail safe operation. Codes p1a0e, p1a0f, p0a3c, p0a3e, p0a7a, p0a7c and p1a0d may also be set.
Multiple incidents of the vehicle shutting down occurred on 3/8/2014 beginning while travelling along a 2-lane highway (CA-74 around idyllwild area) at approximately 10:30 p. M. Vehicle displayed red triangle icon with exclamation point inside the triangle and words in red "stop safely now", at which point power to the engine was disabled although power steering appeared to still be active. I then pulled over at a turn-out (luckily one was nearby since I was going uphill and losing speed quickly). I proceeded to turn the ignition to the off position and within minutes re-started without further incident until approximately midnight at which point I was travelling along a major freeway in san diego I-15 southbound at a speed of 65-70 mph. At this point the vehicle became disabled after displaying the red icon and words described above. This happened again 4 separate times. These 4 incidents occurred within a 6 mile stretch of each other and within a 20 minute window. There was no other indication that anything was wrong with the vehicle - no system notice of overheating, faulty electrical, etc.
We were driving on highway 80 going about 70 mph when the engine suddenly shuddered and quit. A red triangle with an exclamation point in the center appeared on the dash with the message "stop safely now". Fortunately, there was a shoulder and no traffic in the right lane, so we pulled off. We shut the engine off and restarted it a few minutes later. We proceeded, staying in the right lane and the same thing happened. This occurred 5 times including once on the san francisco bay bridge. In researching this, I found that this is a common problem with Ford Escape Hybrids and that it is a faulty motor electronics coolant pump. Ford has issued a technical service bulletin about this problem (tsb08-24-5), but has not yet issued a recall. Since this is a potentially serious problem that could lead to injury or death, I strongly urge you to force Ford to issue a recall.
Throttle body failure; acceleration issues.
9-27-2013, my car was idling weird at a red light. I looked at the rpm gauge and it was boucing irratically. At some point my wrench dash light came on. I was driving thru a neighborhood at the time so my car seemed to be ok going between 30-40 mph, but at every red light my car seemed like something was wrong. It wasn't going into electric mode like it normally would. I drove on the interstate for a mile and my car would not accelerate over 40-45 mph so I put on my hazards and did my best driving in traffic. The escape was acting like it was dying at one point and started decelerating so then I kept pressing the gas pedal to the floor and it still wouldn't go over 45 mph . I stopped at a red light about a mile from my house and turned the entire car off and sat for a minute or so. When I started it back up the wrench light was off. I took the car to my nearest Ford dealership the next morning and was told that no diagnostic codes were coming up but the tech did some special tests and determined that my mass air flow sensor needs to be replaced. So thats what they did. I asked if they could also replace the throttle body and he told me that they would have to send the part to Ford and if there wasn't anything wrong with it they would be out that money so they could not replace the throttle body. My car is at ~78,000 miles so this seems like a problem I should not be having. My wrench light came on once back on 7-22-13, on a road trip but we pulled over on the side of the road, turned the car off and back on and it never came on again until 9-27-13. My car had been idling weird right before my last oil change on Aug 30, 2013. I mentioned it to my Ford tech then and no diagnostic codes came up so they did a fuel induction cleaning service costing me $145. 95. I'm not sure that this even necessary.

I was driving at approximately 45mph when my vehicle lost speed, and would not respond to pressure to the gas. As I coasted to the side of the road, I had to shut the vehicle off and back on to get it to work. I have had it happen a dozen times since then. In a parking garage, at low speeds, on the interstate at 70mph.

While driving on a side street, my vehicle started to decelerate for no apparent reason. I lost all motive power, and I had to pull over on the side of the road. I turned the car off, and then, after a minute, I turned the car back on again. It worked but I took it immediately to the Ford dealer. They indicated that if there was no warning light on (there was none) then it would be unlikely for them to be able to determine exactly what happened. Three days later, the exact same thing happened. This time on a busy highway. Luckily, I was able to pull over again. Again, I turned the car off, restarted it, and drove off. It was in thick traffic so we were moving slowly for the highway, but again it was between 40-50 miles/hour. I believe this is exactly like the incidents detailed in the current open investigation, pe13003, opened in February of this year. A recall of these Ford escapes needs to happen immediately. It is dangerous for your car to suddenly stop for no reason especially if the SUV is carried small children (mine was not). I was unaware of this issue until I did some investigation online, and the Ford dealer never mentioned it to me at all when I brought it in. In fact, they said it "just might go away". They didn't appear to take the issue seriously at all.

While driving on I-195 east going towards bwi the engine just cut off for no reason or warning then a red traingle appeared stop safely I was able to pull over safely was almost rear ended by a tractor trailer the car would not turn back on for about 5 min after it started I had no power what so ever when about 2 miles at 30 miles per hour and it did it again managed to get it home based on what I have been reading why has Ford not recalled this issues or are they waiting for some one to get killed there needs to be a recall before someone gets hurt. I am looking into getting a lawyer if Ford does not want to fix it.
Driving approximately 35-40 mph for about 15 minutes. Suddenly vehicle lost power and would not accelerate. A "wrench" warning light on the instrument cluster also illuminated, which has never occurred in the past. I have owned the vehicle since new and have never had any engine related problems. Maximum speed was now 22-25 mph. Pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor did not increase engine speed or vehicle speed. Engine rpm was around 1500-1800 rpm according to tachometer. Due to faster traffic slowing behind me I had to pull to the side of the road for safety. Engine continued to operate but would not work properly. I turned the vehicle off, waited a minute and restarted the engine. Wrench light came on again and I had a scary drive back at 25 mph with my kids in the car and traffic speeding around me. Woke up early the next morning to bring in for service and the wrench light was now off and the engine worked normally. It has been 4 days since and the problem has not reappeared. Problem is I am now afraid to drive on the highway or for long distances, and my wife will not drive the vehicle at all.
While traveling at highway speed, the car suddenly loses all power and the stop safely now light comes on in the dash. I had to pull over quickly while avoiding being killed by highway traffic. No warning at all. During my road trip, this happened 3 times on the highway. During my return trip, it happened 3 more times. Problem will only occur at highway speeds and during long road trips. My 20-min drive to work has no issues. This is a serious safety problem and a flawed design on Ford's part. My family and I could have been seriously injured or killed during any one of the six times the car mysteriously died on the highway. From my research, this problem can be caused by several components and is difficult to diagnose in the shop. For older models, there has been TSB's issued, but not for 2008 and later models. I have known several 2008 models that experienced the same problem around 60,000 - 70,000 miles. Browsing though this website shows many have complained about this issue. Ford needs to address this ASAP before someone gets killed or injured on the highway.
My 09 Escape Hybrid suffered the same throttle body failure investigated in pe13003 and dp12006 where the vehicle goes into 'limp mode' following the tb failure. In essence, my daughter was merging not the highway and suddenly lost power to the vehicle. She was able to exit to the shoulder and the vehicle would drive in slow speed but not normal. I had the vehicle repaired at the dealer and have the receipt. However, Ford excluded the hybrid from its consumer satisfaction program 13n03. As my receipt shows, the tb part number is the same as those on the covered vehicles as is the diagnosis and fix (replace the throttle body). I've contacted Ford for coverage of the repair iaw the csp 13n03 but their stance has been that my vehicle was not included in the program. I'm contacting you to see if there was a technical/logical reason why the Escape Hybrid (with the same 2. 5l engine and tb part) was not included in Ford's response and whether there is anything additional I can do from the consumer end. I realize this request is some time after the repair but I was never notified of the csp program since my VIN number was not included and only recently learned of the Ford csp. Thank you. Charles.
While driving 65 miles per hour an alarm sounded and the odometer read "stop safely now. " I lost all power to the vehicle and was able to pull over safely. I was able to restart the vehicle with no problem and continued on my way. When I reached 60 miles per hour the same thing happened. This continued to happen 6 times and then the odometer read "high engine temp" and the vehicle then died and made a "whirling" sound. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and when I got there they told me "I was able to start it right up. " the dealership found it to be TSB 8-24-5. The coolant pump was not working and needed to be replaced. Ford is well aware of this problem and still have not placed a recall on this!! what will it take, people to die when this happens? for me, this was the last straw. I traded in my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid as I no longer felt safe in this vehicle!!.
Two weeks ago I put gas in my escape and the mileage to e reader did not go up after I finished pumping the gas like it normally does. So I pushed the vapor release lock in the gas cap, and it went up to where the reader should have been, which im not sure if that is valid to the issue I am having with my escape but I just thought I would include this just in case. Anyway, later that night on my way home from the gas station is when I had my first incident with the gas pedal not working. I was accelerating up a small incline and then starting losing power and speed. So I pulled over and put my car in park and it was sputtering so I turned my car off, waited a few seconds and turned it back on. When I turned it back on I tried to push the gas pedal to see if my car would move and it worked fine, and I had no issues with it until today. Which like I said has been about two weeks since that first incident. Then this morning when I was on my way to work, it happened again. I was accelerating up a small incline and started to lose power and speed, so I pulled over turned my car off and it worked, I got about 2 miles until it did it again. So I just pulled over turned it off and back on and took off again. It probably stopped working about 30 more times within a 3 mile trip, and I finally gave up and called a tow truck to take it to my dealership where I purchased the car where they then told me that it was the throttle body accuator.
Driving on the highway, engine decelerated, red triangle warning light appeared on dash, with direction to get off of the road. I did so, turned off engine and waited a few minutes. Engine then restarted without warning light coming on. Between that event and arriving home (approximately 10 miles), this occurred 5 more times. This had never happened before. Researching this online, there appear to be hundreds if not thousands of people with the same experience. This needs to be investigated and Ford needs to take responsibility for resolving this issue.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford escort. The contact stated that his vehicle would lose power when driving 70 mph. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. No repairs have been made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage 76,000. The VIN was not available.
Driving along, my wife suddenly noticed that braking was extremely difficult. Dashboard states abs system failure, and regen system failure. She pulled over and turned car off. Restarting, failure lights still come up, braking still extremely difficult. A look under the hood, and the brake fluid is almost completely gone! it'd been filled at last oil change (less than 1500 miles ago) took car to Ford dealership. After 2 days, they determined that the master cylinder and hcu needed to be replaced, that they would be special order parts and that it'd cost extra $ for repairs due to the complexity of the repair. (I'd told the dealership that I'd researched and this is a very common issue, Ford has many tsbs out for this, calls into question the training or the ability of this dealership to properly do the repair) Ford is the only supplier for parts for this particular repair, and they charge a premium price for them! $7000 for parts and labor to repair a safety related problem that Ford should be voluntarily recalling. If they're not going to issue a safety recall, they should at least make the parts available for a lot less money!.
While driving on the freeway, the "stop safely now" lit up after I felt a jolt to the car, which then slowed down. I reached the side of the road and turned the car off for a few minutes. Upon restarting the car the red ssn light was off and I was able to reach a qualified auto repair. They ran the diagnostics but were unable to see a problem after going through their code process, nor recreate the ssn alert. This first happened on February 27th 2013. Again, having three children in the car with me and to have this happen on the freeway was (on the way to disneyland) quite frightening and hazardous! I have read many many stories of feh owners with the same issue! this is a defect to the car, and not due to normal wear and tear. It is a huge safety concern and while I was not injured, the fact that I had to suddenly slow down and pull over could have resulted in other car owners on the freeway being in an accident. Seriously.
