On cold morning, car started drove down the road about 5 miles and the car just died, saying "brake safely now. " seems to happen only on cold days when heater is on. It will not start again for 30 minutes. It will start, but will continuously die. We had called Ford in middlesboro, ky and spoken with frank who said our vehicle did not have any recalls. I then found out it had a recall. I took it in over the weekend and he then claimed on Monday that the recall item had been fixed. However, when I checked the website, it confirmed the problem had not been fixed. This has been going on for about a month now. We have had the oil changed, battery replaced and it checked by Ford of morristown, TN. They claim they can¿t find out what¿s wrong with it. We have read other people's similar complaints who said it was either the "electric motor water pump" or coolant pump.

When I push down on the gas pedal the car would shut the engine off and give me a red triangle symbol and tell me to pull over safely. I would then turn the car ignition off and restart the engine and it would be fine again. I then did some research and found that this was an issue with 2008-2011 Ford escapes and the issue was a faulty throttle body which Ford issued a recall for. I went to the dealer to have it replaced, but the recall that was issued only applied to Ford escape non hybrids even though it was the same issue. This issue had been going on for 1 year before I had it replaced in Nov of 2014.

Rear drivers side window, exploded when I closed the hatch. The vehicle was parked in the garage and I had unloaded what was in the vehicle and then closed the hatch and heard a loud pop and then shards of glass flew everywhere. Luckily I was not hurt but did have marks on my chest area from the flying glass.

My wife left our house to run errands in our 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. She didn't even get out of the neighborhood before she got the "stop safely now" warning, and the vehicle went into "limp home mode". She turned around in a neighbor's driveway and came back home. I took it to the dealership today thinking that it might be the mecs pump for which there is a recent recall. It turns out that it was the throttle body causing the warning. Even though there was a NHTSA investigation on the throttle bodies of these vehicles (dp12006), the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrids were not included in Ford consumer satisfaction program #13n03, which extends the warranty of the throttle body on some escape models (among other vehicles). So, I now have to spend $775. 00 to replace a part that was known to have issues. Luckily, my wife was not on the highway with our 2-month old daughter when this occurred. I don't quite understand how escapes from 2005 to 2012 were part of the investigation, but the preliminary evaluation pe13-003 only applies to 2009 - 2012 models.
I was driving at a speed of approximately 45 mph and the throttle went out. I could not accelerate above 40 and was very slow to get to that speed. The engine was iddeling at a higher rpm than normal at stop lights. When driving up hill the speed was about 20 mph and there was no throttle to increase the speed at all. The yellow wrench ligh came on. Once I made it home and turned off the vehicle, my husband took it to get the codes pulled and the wrench light had gone off and it ran like normal. We could not get the codes pulled.

Currently Ford has a recall (14s19). The coolant pump may malfunction, which can cause the hybrid electronics systems to overheat and possibly lead to more serious problems. "when the hybrid electronics system gets too hot it will shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash," according to Ford's filing with NHTSA. My vehicle has this problem. It has happened several times, and I have already notified this agency. Once again, on September 5, 2014, I was driving in maryland, near DC, in rush hour traffic, and I lost all power. It is really horrible losing all power when you are in the left most lane (no left shoulder), and lose all power. Several cars almost hit us. . . Again. I don't care if my hybrid system is overheating. I would rather destroy the batteries than all of a sudden losing all power in DC rush hour.
Early sept 2014 - began to experience intermittent issues of "limp home" mode. Originally, issue began with small "surges" in acceleration that I believed were simply related to the hybrid engine kicking into gear. Then experienced multiple but random "limp home mode" events, particularly when stopping at lights or accelerating (light-mod pressure) from a full stop. Car would flash "service engine soon" and not go above 20mph and sometimes not that. Would pull off if able, otherwise, would have to stop with flashers in the middle of the road, turn off the engine, wait a minute, and then restart (rebooting car). This would clear the check engine light and car would resume normal operation - of note: codes would not stay in the history of the computer. After several occurrences, managed to "limp home" to a mechanic while the light was on and pull codes between 2009-2012 and was advised to have the computer reprogrammed by Ford service. Car began limping home during full traffic and full acceleration (not stopped or slowing), causing a massive safety concern. Noted multiple investigative mentions on internet regarding 2005-2012 etb issues, but also noted this was then only "replaced" for 2009-2012. Apparently, anything older than 09 is a lost cause. 10/23/14 - have car in Ford service and recall (14s19) has been noted regarding motor electronics coolant pump causing "a failure mode effects management strategy that can result in a sudden partial or full loss of motive power" to protect vehicle powertrain. Being charged for diagnostic even though there is a recall on the part that is likely causing the problem.

Approximately 8-9 months ago I felt like the master cylinder was going out in my 2006 Escape Hybrid. I took it to a local shop that I trust a few days later and the mechanic drove it and thought it was ok so no repairs were preformed. However, at this time he did not perform any sort of a computer diagnostic test because he felt the brakes seemed ok. Fast forward to approx. 8/17/14, I pulled into my garage and before I turned my car off both the led message board indicated an issue needed attention (can't recall exact wording) and the red brake warning light on the dash lit up indicating the brake unit needed service. I took the vehicle back to the same mechanic and he performed a computer diagnostic test. He got back to following: "brake system diagnostics code: c1471 high pressure accumulator volume consumption plausibility failure. Recommend replacement of the master cylinder first and recheck system. If code returns the hydraulic control unit will need to be replaced. " the cost to perform this work is nearly $8,900. 00 and almost all of that charge is for replacing these two defective parts, not labor. The cost to replace the failing hydraulics exceeds the blue book value of the vehicle also. This vehicle has only 91,589 miles on it and the whole hydraulic system is failing. I checked out various internet boards and it looks like my problem is the same exact problem scores of others have experienced, and many of them right at the same approx. Mileage interval.
I am an owner of a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. Within the past week, the right rear fender wall completely rusted through. When I drove my car, it sounded like a series of small bombs were going off in the back anytime I hit a hole. When I took the car into get fixed, it cost $1064. 62. Ford will not reimburse me for a penny of this. I am not the only one facing this exact same problem. . Read more...
Over time my vehicle has gotten harder and harder to start. Now I have to press the keys in turn to have the vehicle start. After some research I found several users have the same exact problem. (https://youtu. Be/bv8tdcf83vc) it appears to be an issue with plastic clips used to hold the ignition switch in place. The mechanic in the video states that it's the rod that engages the switch, it becomes loose and requires you to push the key in to start the vehicle. This is poor design by Ford and places the onus on the customer to fix it.
I was driving along a fairly busy highway in pennsylvania. The engine all of sudden stopped and this is very dangerous in busy traffic. Luckily we were able to pull over and waited for the car to cool. It restarted and then again did the same thing several miles down the road. This happened again on 19 July 2014 along small town road not far from home. The car was barely warm. We had replaced the battery pack air filter on 17 July 2014, thinking that this may have caused the problem. There is 'stop safely now 'message that appears just before it suddenly stops. This is a very dangerous situation, I can't believe that someone has not done a recall on this.

As we were driving, a "hazard" light come on the dash, the engine shut completely off, and a message, "stop car safely," also appeared on the dash. We did so, and turned off the car and turned it back on. Car drove fine for about 5 minutes and the same thing happened. We did this for about an hour or so to get home. Had we been on a busy interstate. A sudden engine shut off could have been very dangerous. We took the car to the dealership and were informed that the electric battery had overheated because the water pump was not working. I have come across similar complaints while looking into my situation. . Read more...
On a trip from cincinnati OH to bloomington in, roughly 140 miles, the check engine light came on several times with no apparent driveability issues. The return trip a few hours later, however, on a busy highway at 75 mph the vehicle suddenly lost power showing the message "pull over safely immediately". It was difficult to navigate to the shoulder without power, and very frightening. After a few minutes I was able to start and run the vehicle again for about 10 minutes before experiencing the power loss again. After a tow and oil change I was sent on my way only to have the same issue again several times before getting another tow all the way home. This has happened several times since, only at highway speeds, always dangerous and scary. The dealer is replacing the merc pump and a couple other items for a cost of over 1200. 00. This should be a recall issue--so many complaints already lodged and such a dangerous situation.
Time of day: 1800, temperature about 80f. "stop safely now" message appeared on console. Vehicle slowed down while travelling at 65mph on an interstate highway during a heavy rush hour traffic. Fortunately, I was travelling on the left lane and safely moved to the left curb and within seconds the engine died. I kept trying to start but no success. While on the phone with the insurance company for a tow truck, I tried again, and the engine restarted. I was able to continue driving home for about 25 minutes, approximately 15 miles. While approaching a traffic light, the "stop safely now" message appeared and this time the car died in the middle of the street. This time, it died within 3 seconds after the message appeared. It was a major safety hazard when other cars were approaching and with very little room to stop and react. This was in a 35 mph residential zone. I had to call a local police department to assist managing the traffic. After about 15 minutes, I was able to start the car again and continued the last 2 blocks to my resident. This is a serious safety issue that could have resulted in multi cars accident had I not had the opportunity to drive to the curb before it stopped.
I was driving on the freeway in the carpool lane, about 65mph. Heard a noise (sounded like the engine losing power) and saw the warning light to "stop safely now". Had to pull to left immediately, with very little room in the shoulder on a very busy freeway. This was a very hazardous and stressful situation, particularly because I had a toddler in the car with me. Car was towed to the nearest Ford dealer. I was told by the dealer that the problem was failure of the mecs (motor electric cooling system). However, this is not under warranty or recall. This part should be considered for recall because of the serious safety hazard it poses when it fails.
Multiple incidents of the vehicle shutting down occurred on 3/8/2014 beginning while travelling along a 2-lane highway (CA-74 around idyllwild area) at approximately 10:30 p. M. Vehicle displayed red triangle icon with exclamation point inside the triangle and words in red "stop safely now", at which point power to the engine was disabled although power steering appeared to still be active. I then pulled over at a turn-out (luckily one was nearby since I was going uphill and losing speed quickly). I proceeded to turn the ignition to the off position and within minutes re-started without further incident until approximately midnight at which point I was travelling along a major freeway in san diego I-15 southbound at a speed of 65-70 mph. At this point the vehicle became disabled after displaying the red icon and words described above. This happened again 4 separate times. These 4 incidents occurred within a 6 mile stretch of each other and within a 20 minute window. There was no other indication that anything was wrong with the vehicle - no system notice of overheating, faulty electrical, etc.
I was driving my daughter home and pulling to a stop sign the brake and abs light as well as the service notification showed up and it became very difficult to brake. After taking it to the dealership I was informed that the hcu and control module assembly were defective.
Electrical system in my Ford Escape Hybrid 2008 shut down while driving at high speed (indicator with a triangle shape and an admiration sign inside). The "stop safely now" sign was displayed at the same time. I could not accelerate anymore, thus losing full control of the car. I pulled over to the shoulder, turned the engine off and turned engine back on. Once I turn the car off, it will drive and then repeat. Initially it only happened on the freeway but now it happens while driving at regular speeds (25mph). The first dealer I took it to told me to replace the engine coolant pump, I did still the same problem; I took it to another Ford dealer who said I needed to replace the filter to the coolant pump, I did still the same problem. Today I was told that the throttle body was bad so I replaced this, still the same problem!!!! this is a very dangerous situation with nosolution. Ford, please recall the models impacted and fix this issue as soon as possible before people get killed.
Noticed a loud banging noise in the back passenger side. Looked in wheel well and it is completely rusted out. You can see right through the car. Took it to the repair shop and they told me they have seen many exact scenarios. Shock is attached in a way that it rubs against the wheel well causing corrosion. . No other rust on the vehicle and it is stored in the garage. I am the original owner and have given scheduled maintenance and repair. In looking further in to this it is a common complain. Clearly a design flaw. A recall is needed as this is a huge safety issue. The wheel can fall right off = and that will cause serious injury, please investigate.
My wife was travelling home and the car went from 45 mph to about 1 mph, the car was still running but when she stepped on the gas nothing happened. The car limped home. We did some investigation and found similiar issues with the throttle control body. We contacted gwinnett place Ford and they informed us that no recall was in place and would not correct the issue without payment. If my wife had been on the freeway at that time she would have been involved in a rear end collision.

I noticed an unusual sound from the right rear end of my 2005 Escape Hybrid a couple of weeks ago and was only able to look at it today. I was amazed to find the wheel well had rusted out at the attachment point of the shock and the upper part of the shock is hanging free. Then I looked at the other side and it is starting to go. Clearly the vehicle is unsafe to drive in this condition. I was hoping to keep the vehicle a few more years but it looks as though without major reconstruction it is junk at this point in time. Clearly the vehicle is out of warranty but it does not seem to me that the degree of failure seen here is unexpected under normal conditions especially in that I have owned the car since new and it has been well maintained. In a brief search of the web I have found that other escape owners have experienced this problem and that Ford is aware of this. I am concerned that with a potential for catastrophic failure Ford did not notify the owners to check for this problem.
Car lights come on . I changed water pump. Now sign comes again it is heat sensor what I hear from other people . Sign says stop now safely, , once you stop turn the switch off and on then car starts , but it happens again every week, I have family like most of other people who have Ford Escape Hybrid are going with same issue,s . Ford is not doing any thing about it, when sign come on the free way that is very danger. How come there is no recall on it. When japanese Toyota prius or any car car has problem that be came big issue but when that is Ford made in USA no one talks about it, so sad, I hope Ford will do some thing about this,.
Recently while driving, my dashboard suddenly displays a red triangle with an exclamation point in it and advises me to "stop safely now. " regardless of whether I can stop safely or not, I lose power suddenly. This has happened many times, and I have been informed that this is a generic warning that covers numerous car problems. Unfortunately, I do many miles on the highway at higher speeds. Ignoring the past couple of years when this has happened, and I made complaints to this site then, the most current bouts have occurred when I was in very heavy commuter volume on the same highway that is currently under construction with no shoulders. I lose power, without even the opportunity to at least get out of the middle lane. This severely disrupts traffic, and I have almost been rear-ended numerous times. What's worse is, I have taken it to a Ford dealership and they have not been able to identify the problem. I have had numerous things fixed, but I still have this problem. This is not safe, and most likely, one day I will be injured because of it. I would rather have the option of ruining my vehicle by driving it when I shouldn't then to not have the option of getting out of harms way. I understand that other years of escapes were recalled for this problem, so why not mine? thank you.
I was driving home on a Saturday morning with my little daughter in the back seat, when I got the shock of my life as my car, all of a sudden, stopped and went dead. I was lucky to have no traffic and that I was going relatively slow, so I got to a complete halt without any problems. I had to wait until the car cooled down and then was able to restart it to drive home, I was only one block from my house. I did not dare driving it until I got it to the mechanic two days later. The Ford repair shop replaced the mecs pump the motor electronics cooling system pump refill and retest for $304. 54 in parts plus $443. 00 in labor. Only this year, in March 2015, did I find out about the safety recall of a part. Since I did not immediately recognize the part question, I had to make an appointment for an inspection. The inspection just happened this week and confirmed my car was now fine. I also found out that I had already paid for the recalled part myself. I sent a complaint letter to Ford motor company/board of directors for a refund the same day I filed this complaint with you.
We have a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid - and just this morning, upon hearing an odd rattle coming from the right rear when dropping off my daughter at the local veterinary hospital, I inspected the right rear wheel housing and discovered, to my shock, that under the factory black inner fender undercoating, which was hanging off, the upper shock mount was almost completely perforated with rust, to the point that I could feel a flow of cold air from the a/c exiting the cabin through the perforations. I called ganley Ford as soon as they opened, but the body shop won't be open until Monday. This is my wife's primary car, and with what I've discovered, I'm reluctant to have her, or anyone, drive it until the problem's addressed - and the extent of the corrosion is astonishing. With a 400++ pound battery located between the left and right upper shock mounts, and with the extent of the corrosion I just found, I'm equally concerned for the left rear upper shock mount and body pan integrity, as well as for the hybrid system and battery pack. Please help me to get into immediate contact with the proper Ford zone representative to get a look at this issue and decide where to go from here - this is a premium hybrid SUV that I thoroughly researched before selecting to purchase, and now I'm afraid to even move it from my parking deck at the office. This car, and other escapes suffering from this same issue, are accidents waiting to happen. A simple web search shows that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of escapes suffering the same issues. This is a critical safety issue and I would ask sincerely that NHTSA investigate and act quickly. Cordially, chris esker - cell 330. 714. 9749 or email at ccesker@gmail. Com.
While driving 65 miles per hour an alarm sounded and the odometer read "stop safely now. " I lost all power to the vehicle and was able to pull over safely. I was able to restart the vehicle with no problem and continued on my way. When I reached 60 miles per hour the same thing happened. This continued to happen 6 times and then the odometer read "high engine temp" and the vehicle then died and made a "whirling" sound. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and when I got there they told me "I was able to start it right up. " the dealership found it to be TSB 8-24-5. The coolant pump was not working and needed to be replaced. Ford is well aware of this problem and still have not placed a recall on this!! what will it take, people to die when this happens? for me, this was the last straw. I traded in my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid as I no longer felt safe in this vehicle!!.
While driving on the interstate, the vehicle lost propulsion and required the driver to pull off to the side of the road and restart the vehicle twice in a distance of five (5) miles. After speaking with a service technician at our local Ford dealership, he indicated that the issue is a problem with the throttle body. Apparently, this is an continual issue on this model and I was also informed this part (throttle body) is currently on a "national" back order. I would think that if this specific part is on a 'national" backorder, Ford should issue a recall because it is obvious there is a problem.
When you engage the vehicle into drive, after few minutes the service ranch light goes on. The issue is that my SUV Ford escape is stalling while in motion or suddenly surging forward when accelerating from a stop. After having my dealership and outside mechanic review the issue. The root cause was identified to be faulty throttle body. Apparently a common issue among Ford escapes.
Vehicle would show a warning message at highway speeds stop safley now and the first time it had done this was approx 1 yr from the date of me buying the vehicle. On the morning of April 21, 2013 the situation occured only that this time I had a vehicle directly behind me and another in the line to my right. My only option on a 2 lane highway was to swerve to my left to avoid any other vehicles being involved. With no control over breaks or acceleration I hit the metal center divider air bags all deployed except for my drivers stering wheel. With this my car was declared totaled but I have incurred many additional costs due to this vehicle failure. Looking at the website 100+ complaints and only 1 investigation. Something needs to be done.
The electronic coolant pump is known problem and Ford is finally supposed to be fixing this through a recall October 2014. . Read more...
Ford Escape Hybrid (feh) "stop vehicle safely" red triangle warning and immediate engine shutdown due to the well-known defect in the bosch oem motor electronics cooling system (mecs) pump in the 2005-2008 model years. See Ford TSB 08-24-5. If the NHTSA did even a cursory search on the internet they would see many, many hundreds of postings and related accidents or near-misses. This is a very serious safety problem because failure is only triggered by driving at highway speeds or driving up steep hills and the shutdown is immediate (no prior warning), causing sudden and significant drop in speed and frantic actions by the driver to abruptly steer the unpowered car to the shoulder. There are no external indicators to warn other vehicles of the sudden slowdown and lane change and the driver dare not use the brakes to signal others because to hit the brakes with the engine shut down and the vehicle already quickly slowing to a stop would cause the feh to abruptly stop in the middle of highway. Although this part is unique to the hybrid versions of escapes, Ford refuses to classify it as a unique hybrid component (which would be covered by the 8 yr 100,000 mi warranty) and routinely charges $800 to replace it. In my case failures happened four times in the last year, always on interstate highways. Two of the failures nearly caused multiple car pileups because the interstate was full of cars and semis when the engine cut out. I am frankly shocked that the NHTSA didn't require a recall years ago for a well-known and common defect that without warning causes feh's to abruptly and significantly slow down specifically at high speeds or steep hill climbs, forcing the driver to abruptly change lanes to get to the shoulder. Several class action lawsuits are being prepared. Isn't it time the NHTSA addressed this very serious defect?.
2007 Ford escape engine will cut off and tell me to pull over safe. Has happen down freeway, stop sign, and leave in stop light in middle of road. This is very unsafe. Called dealership and they said are 07 Ford escape does not qualify for the recall.
I own a 2008 Escape Hybrid. On numerous occasions my escape’s engine stalls/shuts down at speeds over 40 mph. The red triangle on the right of the instrument panel lights up and the display reads “pull over safely now. I can immediately start the car again and go, but it will only travel 1-2 miles before stalling/shutting down again. Typically, if I wait 3-5 minutes I can go and have no more issues for a week or a month (it went one time 9 months before it happened again). There is no rhyme or reason for this; it has happened in 90 degree weather and 40 degree weather, rain or shine. Last night driving home on the interstate, it shut down every 1. 6 to 5. 4 miles on my 42 mile commute home. I let it sit for over 10 minutes and it still shut down. I drove it to work this morning, no troubles. I have had it in the shop multiple times and they replaced the battery said the water pump and nothing has worked. I bought the vehicle new and this problem started approximately 23k miles in. Ford is telling me they really don’t know what is causing it, but don’t have problem taking my money trying to figure it out. I am afraid this is going to lead to an accident as most of the time we are on the interstate traveling over 65 mph with tractor trailers next to us. I have read numerous blogs with other Escape Hybrid owners having this same issue.
While driving at 35 mph everything shut off, electrical and mechanical. No warning at all! had to pull off road and hit the emergency brakes to come to a stop. Brought the vehicle to Ford for service and they found that the Ford motorcraft battery that was installed when the vehicle was manufactured had leaked battery acid onto the main wiring harness and corroded it. $1,600. To replace it. My Escape Hybrid was two months out of warranty, although the mileage was not and Ford wouldn't do anything to help even though it was their equipment that failed and the battery had obviously been leaking for more than two months for this to happen.
Master cylinder on 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid failed - 73940 miles on car. Mostly city & highway driving - no racing or other kind of driving.
