2 Tire problem of the 2003 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 12/30/2022

My wife, two young daughters, and I were traveling out of town for the new year. As we were traveling southbound on I-85 between greensboro, north carolina and thomasville, north carolina, I started to notice that the vehicle was starting to vibrate. Over the course of the next +\- 10 miles the vibration became much worse and eventually forced me to get off of the highway. I exited the highway at exit 103 on I-85 southbound (nc-109) and was able to get the vehicle to a national tire and battery shop located at 2 cloniger dr, thomasville, nc 27360. Upon inspection, they noticed a large bulge in the driver side rear tire and told me that they thought that I might have broken a belt inside of the tire. They were able to get it off and put on the full size spare, thus allowing us to get to our destination. I strongly believe that had I not exited the highway when I did, there was a high likelyhood that the tire could have blown thus causing us to crash. With that said, this failure put my entire family at risk. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The tire has only been inspected by the national tire and battery that took it off and replaced it with the full size spare. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The problem started they day of the incident as we were traveling southbound on I-85 between greensboro, north carolina and thomasville, north carolina. Tire size - lt 265/75 r 16.

13 Tire problem of the 2004 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 10/25/2009

On may 9 2008 I purchased a set of 4 spector advanta at all season tires for my 2004 Ford Excursion. On 23 November while traveling from boise idaho to las vegas nevada I experience a left rear tire failure at 70 mph. The tire shredded completely down to the steel belts. The vehicle was being operated at highway speeds and was not towing or heavily loaded. The incident caused $1800 in damage to my vehicle. I filed a claim with the tire manufacturer and during the course of the claim they tire manufacturer took the remnants of the tire for a forensic analysis. The tire dealer where I purchased the tires replaced the tire with the same tire type. I never heard back on the results of the "forensic" analysis. On August 16th, while towing my travel trailer at approximately 55 mpr I experienced a tire failure in the left rear tire. Once again the tire completely shredded down to the steel belts. I took it back to the dealer I bought the tires from and demanded a different set of replacement tires but was denied. The dealer did contact the manufacturer to see what the story was on the previous tire failure and to see if there was a recall on that particular tire. He stated the manufacturer told him they couldn't determine why the tire failed and that they weren't responsible for any damage to my vehicle or to reimburse the dealer for a new set of tires for me. The dealer stated that because of the destroyed nature of the tire he couldn't determine a cause of failure but would replace only the shredded tire. Yesterday, 25 October I once again experienced a tire failure with a spector tire. I was traveling at highway speed, 75mpr, empty and the right front tire shed all of the tire tread. I pulled over and watched the tire, consisting of steel belts, slowly deflate. Once again, the shredding tire did extensive damage to my vehicle. My complaint is 3 tires shredding under "normal" use is not "normal".

Traveling north in light rain on ih 55 at brookhaven, ms on Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2005. I experienced a sudden failure of a firestone steeltex r4s radial tire. Luckily it was on the rear of my 2000 Ford Excursion, and I was able to get to the shoulder quickly and safely. The tire tread had separated from the ply for about a third of the way around the tire on the inside. The tire has 34,000 miles on it. This sudden failure in a similar mode as the other firestone failures leads me to believe perhaps they should be recalled also. 20 Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 11/13/2004

I purchased 4 big o big foot at tires in August 2003. In the four months between July 2004 and November 2004, I experienced 3 separate high-speed catastrophic blow-outs on 3 of the tires. In each case, I was traveling at highway speed (65 mph) with my family in the vehicle. The first was on a warm summer day, the second was on a moderate day, the third was at about 35 degrees. The first two blow-outs occurred on the front passenger side. The third was on the rear driver's side. After the replacement of each of the first two tires, the remaining three wheels were rotated. In each case, it was a struggle to maintain control of the vehicle, but in the third case (rear tire), the car skidded dangerously out of control as the rear end swayed back and forth. Had I not steered into the skid, I am certain the vehicle would have rolled over. The big o dealership replaced the tires each time, but insisted that the failures could only have been caused by encountering some road hazard which caused the tires to DE-pressurize quickly, heat up and then blow. However, three high-speed blowouts in four months indicates not an isolated circumstance or coincidence, but a dangerous and potentially deadly pattern.

29 Tire problem of the 2003 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 04/20/2004

I spoke to Ford & firestone about the voluntary safety campaign. When I spoke to Ford on the first occassion, I was told that the original tire size on my Excursion was lt265/75r16. I was also told that the replacement affected the "d" load range tires. I spoke with firestone and they instructed me to contact one of the firestone corporate stores and visit the store to get the tires replaced. I proceed to the store, firestone employee orders the tires. The tires come in for installation. I visit the store to have the tires installed, and they tell me that this exact tire is not part of the safety program. Ford explained to me that an "e" load range tire is what is being replaced in the safety program. An "e" load range tire is a 10 ply tire. A "d" load range tire is an 8 ply tire. If firestone is replacing the other steeltex radial "d" load range tires with an "e" load range, how is it possibly safe for me to have a "d" load range tire on a heavier truck that has a diesel motor? my exact tire is a steeltex radial r4s lt265/75r16 and it has a "d" load range. If the other "d" load range tires are unsafe because they are the wrong load range, why are my exact tires not being replaced? I do not want to have a crash, fire, fatality, or tire failure because the incorrect tire is on my truck. I want to know what capacities a "d" load range tire covers with the truck's gross vehicle weight and the truck's gross vehicle weight when towing the maximum capacity. I do tow a heavy boat and I want to be assured that I have the right tires on the truck. If Ford or firestone put incorrect tires on the truck that are a safety hazard, I want the proper tires replaced by Ford or firestone and installed on my truck. Will you provide answers to the above questions and concerns via e-mail or in writing to the address or e-mail address included? thank you for your help in investigating this matter. Monte brackett .
