37 Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 02/27/2004

Replacement of firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. I replaced these tires in 2001 at 17,200 miles because of safety concerns. At that time there were many complaints to NHTSA and shortly thereafter an investigation was open. Ford now uses e rated tires on the Excursion which run at higher tire pressure. Once again Ford did not outfit the vehicle with a proper tire for the weight of the vehicle, rather opting for a smoother ride of a d rated tire. They were doing this because the front springs were also inadequate for a good ride. The used e rated tires on the f250 and f 350 from which the Excursion is based.

38 Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 02/26/2004

Replacement of firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. Having replaced these tires in 2001 at 21,622 miles because of safety concerns, I am now ineligible for reimbursement because of having done so. Rather, it seems, I should have waited until the tires had malfunctioned and then, if I had survived, filed for reimbursement. Such perverse logic by firestone should be overturned and I call on the NHTSA to have firestone reverse its position.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Excursion. The vehicle has michelin ltx m/s tires, size 265/75/r16. When the contact purchased the vehicle, he noticed that the tires were firestone tires. They were not the correct tires he originally ordered. The contact informed the dealer of the incorrect tires and was given brand new replacement tires, which where michelin class c's. While driving at any speed, the vehicle would sway from side to side. He noticed that the walls on the tires were cracking. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that due to the thickness of the threads, the tires would wobble. Once the threading began to wear, the vehicle would stop wobbling. However, the vehicle continued to sway from side to side. The vehicle was then taken to a local repair shop and inspected by a technician, who determined that the failure was due to the incorrect grade for the weight of the vehicle. The tires should have been a class e (load range 5,250) instead of a class c (load range 2,270). The tires were replaced with michelin class e tires at the cost of $907. 45. The contact called the Ford manufacturer and filed a report. He called back to follow up with the manufacturer and was informed that no compensation would be provided and was not given an explanation. The dot information was unavailable. The failure mileage was 20,000 and current mileage was 60,000. Updated 06/09/09 updated 06/10/09.

Vehicle = 2000 Ford Excursion. Res = firestone steeltex while traveling on I-15 southbound from brigham city, utah to salt lake city, utah, the left (drivers side) rear tire on the vehicle blew out. The vehicle was traveling at a speed of approximately 60 mph and did not hit any debris or anything else on the road. The tire was completely distroyed. Fairly major body damage occured. At this point, I went to a big-o tire dealer and had them remove all firestone tires from the vehicle and replace them with big-o brand tires. There were no injurys. 57 Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 07/18/2002

On 7/18/02, the right front tire quickly went flat at a speed of about 65mph. The mileage on the tire was 24,000. The brand new spare, also a firestone steeltex, was installed on the right front, and blew out at approx 20 miles. The number on the new tire is dh323xg12d, serial # vnw81x03400. Number on the tire with 24000 miles is d5323xg16l, serial #vnw81x03400. These 2 firestone steeltex tire failures occurred on the same day less that a few hours apart. Roads were dry, and temperature was about 85 f. Obviously, I lost all confidence in the tires, and replaced all 5 tires (yes, even the spare) with michelins at a cost of over $1100. These are load range e tires which makes them quite expensive. Although the firestone tires were not subjected to recall, I wonder why not. The firestone dealer I contacted was extremely rude, and said there was nothing he could do about the failure as they were not subject to recall. Also, Ford said there was nothing they could do. Talk about passing the buck. At least, I know my family is now safe on michelins. I would never purchase anything with the firestone brand as I believe they have serious quality control problems. Would be pleased to further discuss this with anyone. I am not particularly looking for financial assistance, but have noticed many other Ford Excursions still with the firestone steeltex tires on the ground, and wonder about the safety of those involved. Thank you.

59 Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Excursion

Failure Date: 06/02/2002

While traveling the speed limit on an interstate highway, June 2, 2002, we had only traveled approximately 20 miles, when we experienced a tire explosion on the front driver's side. This caused us to lose control of our vehicle, crossing two lanes of traffic, and ending up in the median. Before coming to a complete stop, the vehicle had traveled approximately 60 yards, turned sideways, and almost rolled. My Excursion was up on two wheels, nearly rolling over. It stayed suspended in air for a few seconds before falling back down on all four wheels. No other vehicle was involved, and no physical injury was incurred. However, it endangered the life of my family, and traumatized my children. There needs to be a further investigation into firestone tires. There definitely is a problem there.
