The contact owns a 2017 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver's side front tire became flat. The contact pulled to the side of the road to replace the driver's side front tire; however, she was unable to remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Aaa arrived on the scene but was also unable to remove the lug nuts. Aaa informed the contact that the aluminum caps on the lug nuts prevented the lug wrench from removing the lug nuts. The vehicle was towed to a tire repair specialist where twenty-four lug nuts were replaced. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was a wear and tear issue. The manufacturer advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
I purchased my Ford Expedition new in January 2018 and have driven it 40,000 miles. When I took it to wyatt johnson Ford yesterday for a routine oil change and tire rotation, I was told that it has "swollen lug nuts. " I have extended plus elite new warranty, ultimate titanium plus warranty, and perma plate appearance protection warranty; but was told that the warranties would not cover replacement of the swollen lug nuts. Apparently this is a poor design and Ford should redesign the lug nuts and issue a recall.
The lug nuts are 'swollen', difficult to remove and are 'separating' according to America's tire personnel who rotate and balance my tires.

When I recently got tires rotated my vendor (not the car manufacturer) informed me there are known problems with lug nuts on Ford Expeditions; that apparently something about two-layer metal causing swelling and difficulty for tire repair shops to effectively remove them which causes (to a degree) stripping of them. Tire shop employee informed me and also showed me the result after they rotated and you can tell there is an issue.

I work at a tire store and have seen on numerous occasions, lug studs snapping with torque wrench use of 100 psi. On Ford and Lincoln trucks and SUV's. It is only happening to the ones with 10 mm lug studs. The metal on the inside of the stud has varying shades of grey in it. It looks like the metal is not the same all the way through. Once the stud snaps, the nut can be screwed off by hand and is not cross threaded. When trying to torque them, the nut keeps turning until the stud snaps. We have done this using different impact guns and torque wrenches on a minimum of 15 vehicles with any where from 1 to 8 studs snapping. The customers think we are breaking them from incompetence. Ford recalled studs from 1997 to 1998. I have seen it on 1999 and 2000 models with 10 mm studs. When I send them to the dealer on the later models, they are told it is not covered.
This 2000 Ford Expedition is used as an emergency response vehicle operated by paramedics responding to 911 calls for medical assistance. During routine driving, a paramedic reported a sudden grinding noise in the front end. He was returning to the station when the front right wheel (tire and rim) came off. All five posts were sheered off. Vehicle undergoes rigorous maintenance, and no previous issues were reported.

The right rear wheel feel off my 1998 Ford Expedition. It looks like the lug nuts sheared off at the axle.
Normal driving, shaking steering wheel, which lead to a broken wheel stud after it was already fixed in another recall. No injuries, was caught before any damage was done.
While approaching a stop light the consumer applied the brake and heard a thump as if something was under the vehicle. The consumer's husband exited the vehicle to see what was wrong. All five lug nut had come off the wheel and it had fallen off.
Nhtsa campaign 98v095000; Ford issued a wheel lug nut recall. This vehicle was not included in the recall, but had some of the lug nuts come off. The VIN is outside the remedy scope.
While driving at 55 mph, the consumer felt the vehicle wobble and thump to the ground. The consumer lost control of the vehicle which did a three hundred sixty degree turn on the highway. When the vehicle stopped spinning the consumer found that the right rear wheel had separated from the vehicle. The lug nuts had simply sheared off of the wheel. This problem has occurred twice on this vehicle. The only difference is on the second time one lug nut was saved from being sheared off.

When changing a flat tire (on two separate occasions) one of the bolts that secures the lug nuts which holds the tire onto the axle broke. I am concerned that these bolts are weak and will break while driving. Is this a common occurrence?.

While traveling at 45 mph and pulling a trailer down hill, and without any indication, left rear wheel separated from vehicle. Tire/ rim and disc brakes were gone. Please provide further information. The lug blots sheared off causing the wheel to separated from the vehicle, all bolts sheared off at backerplate. Nlm.
Towing boat with the Expedition. Back left rear wheel ran off. Contacted the dealership where I purchase Expedition. Wanted no part of what I had to say. They were contacted three times. Next called Ford @ 1-800-392-3673. Told them I had been made aware of the recall on the wheels/lugs/nuts/bolts. But I was informed my truck was not included in this recall. I asked why did my truck have all the systoms of the recall. 1) wheel ran off 2) none of the remaining 3 wheels will not torque down tight. My truck is also still under warranty but I was told Ford would not take care of the problem without a fee. I feel Ford is at fault, but they do not want to help.
Lugs: nuts keep loosening and causing wheels to almost fall off. Studs: lugs: nuts loosen up just by driving vehicle. This will be the second time for the same repair.
While driving another vehicle started pulling to right side and consumer had to pull other way. Lost control into upcoming traffic. An investigating agency named impact general, and said that bolts: lugs: nuts did not work, and wheel came off vehicle.
Consumer was traveling 55mph in middle lane and moved to right after hearing something buckling from passenger's front tire. Consumer was turning on to exit ramp and tire came off. Vehicle was towed, and they found that nuts: bolts had broken off. Consumer's insurance adjuster had never seen anything like it. Consumer will check to see if the recall id# 98v095000 manufactrer recall 98s14 will apply.
While driving about 55 mph tried to change to freeway and right front tire separated from vehicle without prior warning. Consumer had found out that bolts were rusted in back of it, and rest of tires were in same condition.
Wheel of vehicle disconnected due to lugs:nuts: bolts shearing off. I was informed (by my brother who is a Ford technician) that night that there is a recall on Ford Expedition for that problem.
Dealer said that cotter pin on right front wheel was missing, an accident did occur.
While traveling noticed rear of vehicle shook. Pulled over and noticed 3 of the lugs: nuts: bolts broke off. Riverhead Ford fix the right weel (after 3 days) two weeks later the left weel did the same.
While driving at 50 mph heard a pop, rear left wheel bolts came off and studs snapped, and wheel come off.
Left rear tire and rim came off while driving at 60 mph and pulling a small utility trailer, causing an accident. The trailer was severly damaged. The tire, which apparently left the vehicle when several lug bolts sheared off, was retrieved undamaged from a field near the road. The tire had not been removed from the vehicle since it was manufactured. Photos of the accident, sheared lug bolts, and resulting damage are available. This occurred while en route to a youth mission trip in south dakota with six people in the vehicle. There are many witnesses to this accident which clearly appears to have been the result of a manufacturing defect or engineering flaw similar to that encountered with 1997 and 1998 Expeditions.
When standard tire service (rotation) was performed the wheel lug nut studs failed when tightened using typical tightening tools and practices. More information and samples of these failed wheel lug nut studs are available if requested.
Left rear tire and rim came off while driving at 70 mph, causing an accident. Lugs: nuts were not found on vehicle , they were completely off.
In December 1998, the front passenger side wheel came off the vehicle. I was told that there was a problem with the lugs: nuts not being tightened properly by marina Ford (marina del rey, California). The car was taken to magic Ford for repair. In April/may of 2000, the driver side rear tire peeled like an onion and did extensive damage to the rear panel of the truck. At that time, the aaa towing service said that the stems and lug nuts were stripped. We took the car to manhattan beach Ford for repair and investigation. They were to investigate whether the wheels, tires and lug nuts were proper for this vehicle. They fixed it and assured me that everything was fine. On June 2, 2000, while driving on the freeway in the carpool lane, the front passenger side wheel came completelty off the vehicle (yes - for the 2nd time - different wheel). I have reported this problem to Ford as of this morning. The problem is that apparently, the dealer where I purchased this vehicle (Ford of upland) had put on aftermarket wheels, tires, and lug nuts on the vehicle before they sold it to me. Ford is claiming that they do not approve of such aftermarket assemblies. My concern is that we have now put our life in Ford's hands in which we have experienced three life threatening incidents on the freeways of southern California. No one appears to want to take responsibility and everyone is pointing a finger at someone else. This is a serious problem. I bought a Ford product and expect the wheels and tires to remain on the vehicle.
While driving at highway speed rear wheel on passenger's side completely came off, causing distress to the driver who was eight months pregnant, and severe damages to the vehicle. Consumer was not aware of recall 98v095000, and received no prior notification from Ford. Consumer received recall notification on may 6, 2000.
